MCCRACKEN -- Anne McCracken was born to immigrant parents in 1917. She did not learn English until going to St Nicholas Ukrainian church school in Chicago. Anne became an avid reader and made the library one of her favorite places, reading all the selections in the children's section and getting permission to check out books from the adult library area. She married Thaddeus Truszkowski at sixteen and had a son, Theodore, the next year and a second son, Nicholas, nine years later. As a young mother during the depression and World War II she took sewing classes and soon was teaching sewing and dress design at sewing centers in Chicago and at night schools. She later became a dress designer for Sears and other firms. That experience and management responsibilities led to her becoming a senior manager responsible for converting claims records systems for a large insurance company. Thaddeus and Anne were among those who moved from the city to the new suburbs of Chicago. There they built a home with the help of their boys. Anne and Thaddeus became active in work to incorporate the community and subsequently Thaddeus was elected the first mayor of Oakbrook Terrace with Anne playing a significant role in his election and subsequent activities involving the conservative movement of the John Birch Society. After Thaddeus' death Anne married E. Ray McCracken who was also active in politics. During this time she embraced the philosophies of Ayn Rand and Objectivism as advanced by the Libertarian Party. She came to know Rand, and from 1979 to 1989 wrote and presented many television and radio editorial responses representing the views of Objectivism. During that time she was asked to run as Vice-Presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party, since she had received the most votes of any libertarian candidate in Illinois, because of her many years of controversial editorial responses. As an active supporter of gun ownership, she supported the National Rifle Association and served in the organization as a long-time lobbyist before the Illinois State Legislature, and testified for the "Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1985". Anne was also president of "The Right to Work Committee," and spoke for The Illinois Small Businessmen's Association, "The Coalition for a Voluntary Society" and as Educational Director of the Libertarian Party. For several years she worked in hospice services at hospitals in Naperville, Illinois. Anne marched in protest of the Vietnam War with her friend, the economic scholar, Murray Rothbard, and actively supported The Heartland, Cato, Rockford, Ludwig von Mises Institutes, and Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership, the Humanists, and the Foundation for Economic Education. She was especially proud of her work as editor of the award winning Centennial Cook Book for the Union League Club of Chicago where she and Ray were active in programs for underprivileged youth. Anne was one of the founders of Nomos Magazine 1983 to 1996 - a coordinated effort of classical liberals, objectivists, anarchists, and libertarians to share a format for discussing ideas. Anne enjoyed literature, world travel, family dinners and all kinds of music, especially when performed by and with friends and family. Her favorite activity was to have spirited discussions on ideas, beliefs and questions about life and the world. She planted seeds of intellectual curiosity in all those who knew her. After Ray's death Anne moved from the Chicago area to Albuquerque. Anne died at age ninety on December 27, 2007. She is survived by her sons, Theodore Truske and Nicholas Truske, of Albuquerque, their wives, Sharon and Sara respectively; three grandchildren, Peter Truske and wife, Denise, Connie Truske Crane and husband, Paul, Karen Truske Rudys and husband, Michael; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make contributions to the charity of your choice. French Mortuary, Inc. 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400 www.frenchmortuary.com

MILLER -- GEORGE JAMES It is my sad duty to report that George James Miller has passed away after a prolonged illness. He was born on February 9, 1927 in Tracey, Minnesota to Jenny Trout and Fred Miller. He was a resident of Albuquerque for many years, working as a drill sergeant in the Army. When not serving on base, he enjoyed the great outdoors in any and every locale he was stationed at. He was a member of the Toastmasters Club, attended UNM where he obtained a degree in Education, served as a volunteer groundskeeper for the church his wife and two children attended, was an avid rockhound, and botanist, served as a Cub Scout leader and greatly enjoyed the menagerie of stray animals his two children brought home. George loved to scuba dive, first diving in Pearl Harbor to recover unexploded munitions, and later transferring his love of underwater exploration to the deserts oases of the southwest. He dove in major waterway and lake in NM, finally making a trip to the saltwater filled volcanoes in Zuni. His final years were spent near the ocean in Florida. He once wrestled a ten-foot alligator to save the life of a duck. He left this world early on December 24, 2007. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Joy and his son, Guy. He is survived by one daughter and two grandchildren and many, many kind friends. For a dirt poor farm boy from Minnesota, who joined the Army to see the world, he was spectacularly successful. He is and always will be missed.
