BAER -- Roger Vincent Baer, Jr., 56, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2005. Roger was born December 14, 1948 to Roger and Betty Jo Newberry Baer in San Francisco, CA. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sandra Baer; three children, Stephanie Baer of Rio Rancho, Kristy Barrios and husband, Jesse of Rio Rancho, and David Baer of Albuquerque; two sisters, Kathy Branham and husband, Dana of Nevada, Vickie McCahon and husband, Al of California, one brother, Richard Baer and wife, Roby of California; aunts, Margie Ryan and Jean Oberlander of California; five grandchildren, Christopher, Alex, Brandon, Tyler, and Evan. Roger enjoyed being on the golf course, camping, fishing, and being outdoors with his grandchildren and family. BROWARK -- Lauren Jeanette Browark, age 24, of Albuquerque, died suddenly, Saturday, September 24, 2005. Lauren was the loving mother of Sebastian and wife of Daniel Noriega; devoted sister of Erick and Hannah; daughter of Craig and Anita Browark, and Cynthia and Will Fowler; granddaughter of Leonard and Stephanie Browark and Mr. and Mrs. Chet Rogowski. CHAVEZ -- Roseann Chavez, 49, a resident of Carnuel, died Thursday, September 22, 2005 following an illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Onofre and Flavia H. Otero. She is survived by her fiance, Everett Martines; her sons, Daniel and Kyle Chavez; her brothers and sisters, Bobby and Phillip Otero, Sandra/Mike Garcia, Eillen Pino. There are also numerous nephews and nieces and a large extended family. A Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 30, 2005 at Holy Child Parish in Carnuel, NM. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2005 by Father Granito at the Holy Child Parish. FANNING -- Jean Elizabeth Viney Moffat Fanning, 85, recently of Rio Rancho and formerly of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2005. Jean is the beloved wife of James J. Fanning of Rio Rancho. She is also survived by her son, John F. Viney; and daughter, Anne Elizabeth Broyles and her husband, Robert E. Broyles, all of Albuquerque; two granddaughters, Ashley Elizabeth Viney, of Albuquerque, and Julie Elizabeth Mistretta of Tampa, FL; a dear family friend, Gloria Castillo of Albuquerque. Jean was an active member of the Assistance League of Albuquerque and Pi Beta Phi Sorority. Cremation has taken place. FRANKLIN -- Lawrence "Larry" Franklin, age 92, of Albuquerque for over 20 years, passed away peacefully Saturday, September 24, 2005. He was born in Beverly, MA on September 26, 1913 to Llewelyn and Eleanor (Wood) Franklin. He is survived by his son, George and wife, Sally, of Albuquerque; son Rev. David Franklin of Ridgefield, CT; daughter Gail Hanagan and her husband, Bill of Singapore; grandchildren Jeffrey Franklin and wife, Charity, Rebecca Wiseman and husband, Master Sergeant Sonny, Bridget Hanagan and Nora Hanagan; great-grandchildren Troy and Savanna Wiseman, Lauren, Alicia and Colin Franklin. He was preceded in death by his former wife; Josephine Cataldo Franklin and step-son Vincent James Cataldo. Jimmy's wife Anna and their children and grandchildren also survive. Larry worked for many years as an advertising manager at the Salem Evening News in Salem, MA. He embarked on a new career with the Fred Harvey Company at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Larry worked at the Grand Canyon for over 10 years at Moqui Lodge and formed lasting friendships with fellow employees from across the United States as well as many guests from all over the world. During WWII and after, Larry served as a volunteer fireman with the Beverly Fire Department and began a lifelong interest in firefighting and fire trucks. Visitors to his residence at Westwind House were frequently invited to view his extensive collection of model fire trucks. Memorial service will take place on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at French Mortuary-Westside Chapel. HASSE -- Thelma Louise Hasse, 71, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away September, 24, 2005 after an 18-month fight. She was born in Lincoln, NE on January 12, 1934 to Richard L. and Valrea M. King. She spent her childhood years in the Palisade and Fruitvale areas of Colorado graduating from Central High School in 1952. Thelma and her husband, William S. Hasse, were married on March 15, 1952 in Boulder, CO. She loved being a homemaker and raising her two children, William Jr. and Linda. In 1976, Thelma and Bill established Hasse Contracting Company working together side by side as they built the business. Following retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and family and entertaining at the family cabin near Dolores, CO. Thelma will be remembered by her family and friends as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She is treasured for her enthusiasm, optimism, patience, and thoughtfulness. She especially enjoyed nurturing her family and expressed gratitude each day for those she loved. Her valiant spirit and selfless courage in the face of adversity were examples for us all. Her open and accepting heart will be greatly missed. Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth King; and a grandson, Benjamin Gallea. HUMPHREY -- Claire A. Humphrey, age 90, passed away Monday, September 26, 2005. Born Claire Ann Bird, April 29, 1915 in Perth Amboy, NJ, she married William G. Humphrey, June 27, 1938. After his death in 1978 she moved to Albuquerque to be with her family. Claire is survived by her daughters, Claire Garner and her husband, Jimmy Garner (who always brought a smile to her face) and Peg Cronin and her husband, Richard Cronin. She was the beloved grandmother to Susan and John Cronin. Claire made and kept friends easily. She was a passionate Democrat and always helpful to those in need. Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1998. We are grateful she is now at peace. We would like to thank the outstanding staff and caregivers at Manzano del Sol; your care and kindness will always be remembered. Cremation has taken place and there will be a family memorial service at a later date. KILEY -- LEO A. BRIGADIER GENERAL LEO A. KILEY, USAF, RET., age 87, passed away in Santa Fe on Monday, September 26, 2005. He was born on May 22, 1918, in Boston, MA, to Leo A. and Pauline M. Kiley. General Kiley was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Luna Hamilton Kiley of Mars Hill, ME, and by his son, Thomas L. Kiley. He is survived by his daughter, Karen K. Hardy and husband, Kenneth W. of Santa Fe; son, Michael J. Kiley and wife, Jennifer of Henderson, NV; grandchildren: Stephen J. Hardy and wife, Dana of Santa Fe, Christine E. Hardy, of Boulder, CO, Patrick M. Kiley and wife, Mollie, of Henderson, NV, Damon T. Kiley, of Seattle, WA; and great-grandchildren: Alec Liam Hardy of Santa Fe, and Samantha Kiley, of Henderson, NV. General Kiley was a graduate of the Boston Latin School, founded in 1635 and the nation's oldest school, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he earned a degree in chemical engineering and an equivalent masters degree in meteorology. He later earned a doctorate in nuclear chemistry at Ohio State University. An honorary doctor of laws was conferred upon him by New Mexico State University. He served nine years on the board of trustees at the College of Santa Fe. From 1939 to 1969, General Kiley served first in the Army Ordnance Department, but was transferred to the Army Air Corps at the onset of WWII. He commanded weather squadrons in the North Atlantic, the Pacific and the U.S. He was the commander of Hickam AFB Weather Central and later was chief of plans and operations for the Continental Weather Wing at Tinker AFB, OK. In 1954, he was assigned to the Atomic Warfare Directorate of the AF Cambridge Research Center, MA. were he served as deputy director. General Kiley served as deputy chief of staff at the Field Command, Defense Atomic Support Agency, Sandia Base, NM, and later was transferred to the AF Special Weapons Center, Kirtland AFB, NM, were he was instrumental in the organization of the Research Directorate's Biophysics Division which he later directed. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his work which involved defining personnel hazards from nuclear weapons. He was transferred back to the Weapons Effects and Tests Group, Field Command, Defense Atomic Support Agency, Sandia Base, NM, where he ultimately managed all Department of Defense effects test programs in Nevada and the Pacific which were the last series of atmospheric tests prior to the nuclear test ban treaty. He later played a major role in formulating plans for the underground nuclear test program for which he received a second Legion of Merit. In 1963, General Kiley was assigned to the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories and subsequently became its commander. In 1965, General Kiley took command of the Air Force Missile Development Center, Holloman AFB, NM, were he was responsible for the management and support of all Air Force testing conducted at Holloman and the White Sands Missile Range. In 1967, he assumed duties as deputy director for development, Deputy Chief Of Staff, Research and Development at HQ Unites States Air Force. In 1968 he became commander of the Office of Aerospace Research which was tasked with exploring advanced concepts to increase the Air Force's ability to develop superior aerospace weapons in concert with military and academic communities worldwide. His career culminated with the awarding of the AF Distinguished Service Medal. After retirement from the Air Force, General Kiley became General Manager of General Electric Company's Neutron Devices Department in St. Petersburg, FL. The plant employed 1500 people designing and manufacturing neutron generators, thermal batteries and other highly technical and classified devices for the Department of Energy nuclear weapons program. In 1979 General and Mrs. Kiley moved to Santa Fe, where General Kiley was employed for 12 years by Los Alamos Technical Associates in numerous positions including in consulting, corporate management and vice president of the Defense Systems Division and the Operations Planning and Control Division. General Kiley is listed in Leaders of American Science, Who's Who in Space, and American Men of Science. He is member of Sigma Xi, Health Physics Society and the Research Society of America. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 29, 2005, at 5 p.m., with a Rosary following at 6 p.m., at McGee Memorial Chapel. LAIRD -- Fred Graham Laird died Monday evening at his home in Albuquerque. He was born December 6, 1919 in Grass Range, MT, to Fred and Emma Laird, who preceded him him in death, as did his brother, Ralph Laird. He is survived by his wife, Mary Dean Laird; his nephew, David Laird and wife, Nancy; his step-daughters, Mandy Vogel and her husband, Pat, and Marta Richards; and his step-grandchildren, Richard Massony and Matt and Max Vogel. Fred grew up in Moorehead, MN, and graduated from Concordia College. He served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, having been awarded the Bronze Star and retiring with the rank of Major. He moved to Indianapolis, IN with his first wife, Catherine, who preceded him in death. There he was an attorney with Stokely Van Camp. After retirement from that company in 1983, he moved to Albuquerque, where he was active in the Tanoan Homeowner's Association and the Optimist Club. Fred was an avid player of golf and bridge. His outgoing personality and contagious smile won him a wide circle of friends. For those who might wish to send memorials, the family suggests the Optimist Club or Sandia Presbyterian Church. MACPHERSON -- William Herbert MacPherson, 63, died peacefully on Thursday, September 22, 2005 after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Bill was born June 1, 1942 in Hoboken, NJ, grew up in Weehawken, NJ, and lived most of his working life in Lakewood and Jackson, NJ. He moved to Albuquerque in 1986. Bill retired from federal service in 1995 after 31 years as an electronics engineer at Ft. Monmouth, NJ and Kirtland AFB, NM. He was active in the Coalition for Excellence in Science and Math Education and in New Mexicans for Science and Reason, and avidly pursued interests in astronomy, history, and music. Surviving are his father, William G. MacPherson, of Weehawken, NJ; his son, James MacPherson, of Albuquerque; and his brothers, Walter MacPherson, of South Daytona, FL, and Gerald MacPherson of Totowa, NJ. His mother, Ruth Burns MacPherson, predeceased him. The family especially thanks Bill's dedicated caregivers at Sunrise Assisted Living and Presbyterian Hospice staff who cared for him during the last months of his life. MELCHIOR -- Manuel "Big Daddy" Melchior. Our beloved Big Daddy went to heaven to be with our Lord on Friday, September 23, 2005. He was born in Cochiti Pueblo and resided in Santa Fe, NM, before moving to Albuquerque in 1961. He attended St. Catherine's Indian School in Santa Fe where he learned the trade of tailoring from the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. During his early school years, he was blessed to be in the presence of St. Katharine Drexel (founder of the school and recently canonized by Pope John Paul II in October 2000). He worked all his life as a master tailor, both in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, at several men's clothing stores, including Stromberg's Men's Store, Henry's Men's Store, Kistler Collister and Dillard's. Being a tailor was his love and passion and he continued this work until his death. Big Daddy was a wonderful and loving husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, but his family saw him mainly as a father figure. He raised not only his own children, but many of his grandchildren were raised under his loving hand. We are forever grateful for the many lessons he taught his family including hard work, dedication and family were the most important things in life. Big Daddy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna (Big Mama); his son, Larry Melchior; and great-granddaughter, Camden Elizabeth-Rose Sacoman. He is survived by his daughters, Betty Jackson of Albuquerque and Mary Alice Padilla of Phoenix, AZ. His grandchildren are Charlene Cooke and husband, Jim, Fort Collins, CO; Dede Van Voltinburg and husband, Jim, Roseville, CA; Linda Stephens and husband, Jim, Greensboro, NC; Bobbi Johnson and husband, Mark, Phoenix, AZ; Nancy Sacoman and husband, Rick, Albuquerque, NM; Kriss Middleton and husband, Robert, Albuquerque, NM; Lori Melchior, Albuquerque, NM and Larry Melchior and wife, Denise, Albuquerque, NM. The great-grandchildren are Jenni Ford and husband, Damon; Crystal Cooke; Amber, Leland, Serita and Brandon Stephens; Christian Sacoman; Stephanie Middleton; Larry and Candice Melchior; and Kiehren, Savannah and Chandler Melchior. Manuel was a long time member of Our Lady Fatima Church and a supporter of Highland Senior Center. He was a strong supporter of the ministries of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament in Bensalem, PA. He also enjoyed traveling to many conferences as an "Honorary" member of the Federal Court Clerks' Association with Chicago as his last conference site in July 2005. MONTGOMERY -- Rose Ann Montgomery, 73, was born Thursday, February, 18, 1932 and after a lifetime of devotion to her children and family, Rose passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2005. She is survived by her sons, Mike Montgomery and Steve Montgomery, both of Albuquerque; daughter, Cindy Haddox of Broomfield, CO; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three sisters, Corine Gurule, Alice Miera, and Frances Perea. MUELLER -- Daniel Patrick Mueller, age 81, longtime aviation business owner in Albuquerque, died Monday, September 26, 2005. He was born March 16, 1924 to Albert Joseph and Dora Grady Mueller. Dan was an aviator and served in the Army Air Corp. in WWII and served in El Paso, TX. He was the last of "The flying Cowboys" of the four Mueller Brothers. Daniel is preceded in death by his parents and by his first wife, Shirley Lynch-Mueller. Daniel is survived by his second wife of 12 years, Joanne Kane-Mueller; ten children, Florence Gillespie, Euganie Young, Therese Mueller, Dan Mueller, Jr., Kevin Mueller, Michael Mueller, Anita Fleischman, Lorica Aszal, and Patrick Mueller; five stepchildren; and 29 grandchildren. NORIEGA -- Daniel Nazario Noriega, 25, passed away, Saturday, September 24, 2005 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born February 4, 1980 in Albuquerque, the son of Dolores Vallejos and Nazario Noriega. Daniel was reared and educated in Grants, and graduated from Grants High School in 1998 with honors. He attended UNM for two years after graduation, then transferred to TVI where he met the love of his life, Lauren. They were the proud and loving parents of a beautiful son, Sebastian. Barbequing and the outdoors were his favorite pastimes. He enjoyed family, and friends, and loved to have them in his home. Survivors include his mother of Grants; and his father of Gallup; sister, Jessica Noriega and nephew, Tyler Fuell, Albuquerque; half-brother, AJ Noriega, Gallup; grandparents, Charlet and Augustine Olguin, Grants; aunt, Geraldine and husband, Chris Lucero, Grants; uncles, James and wife, Sharon Trujillo, Grants; Arthur and wife, Theresa Trujillo, San Fidel; Tom Trujillo, TX; several cousins of Grants. PACKARD -- Alton R. Packard, born Friday, February 1, 1929, passed away at his home in Albuquerque on Monday, September 26, 2005. Al owned and managed Packard's Indian Trading Company on the Santa Fe Plaza until 1979. Al was one of the last of the vanishing breed-the American Indian Trader. He had hundreds of Indian friends from the Pueblos of New Mexico and Arizona, the Navajos and other tribes. The stories he could tell about his experiences were endless. He and his close friend, Tom Woodard, also a well-known Indian Trader, were responsible for passing laws to protect consumers of Southwest Indian Arts and Crafts. They worked with Ex-Governor Toney Anaya, who was Attorney General at the time. Al had a nation-wide reputation as an expert in Indian arts and crafts; chaired the Indian Arts Fund until it was absorbed by the School of American Research in the 1960s and was a member and chairman of the New Mexico Association on Indian Affairs during the period when it evolved into the Southwest Association on Indian Affairs that staged the annual Indian Market; was a charter member of the Indiana Arts and Crafts Association (IACA) and chaired the Ethics Committee; was on the Board of the Indian Art Magazine; was called upon to judge many shows, including the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial, the Northern Arizona Show in Flagstaff, the Navajo Fair in Window Rock, the Heard Museum in Phoenix, the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Eight Northern Pueblos Shows. Al appraised hundreds of Indian Art collections. As a collector himself, he leaves one of the largest collections of Navajo pictorial weavings in the country. Al was involved in other Santa Fe activities. He served on the board of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter; was a member of the Santa Fe Rodeo Association and was in charge of the parade for several years. The sole Ponderosa pine tree on the Plaza was donated and plated by Al in the mid-70s. Al moved to Santa Fe from Oklahoma in 1937 at the age of seven. His parents, Frank and Marie Packard, owned the Blue Mountain Ranch at the intersection of Cerrillos and Airport Roads. He attended grade school and Wood-Gormley Elementary School, junior high at Harrington Junior High and high school at Santa Fe High School. He attended the University of New Mexico where he studied Geology and Anthropology. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War with the 188th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, also known as the "Enchilada Air Force." Al is survived by his wife, D. J. Packard; brother, Frank O. Packard, Jr. of Albuqueruqe; daughter, Kate Foley and her husband, Jack, of Santa Fe; and grandson, Matt Foley of Los Gatos, CA; son, Rocky Packard and his wife, Susan, and grandchildren, Laura and Ian Packard of Petaluma, CA. SMITH -- John D. Smith, age 84, beloved father and grandfather, was called home by our heavenly Father to join Him and his beloved wife, Margaret, Saturday, September 24, 2005. John was a resident of Albuquerque, NM, formerly of New Britain, CT. He enjoyed down hill skiing; and he loved New Mexico and the people. He was a kind and interesting man; he will be remembered by many for his brilliant smile. John was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Enid Smith on August 13, 2005. He is survived by his loving son, Dennis S. Smith and wife, Sylvia of Albuquerque, NM; and two precious grandchildren, Alexander and Nicole Smith, also of Albuquerque; and a host of friends he met in short time at the Spring Park Apartments. John will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday (today) at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary in Albuquerque. ULIBARRI -- Frank J. Ulibarri went home to be with the Lord on September 26, 2005 at the age of 83. He was born on October 10, 1921 in New Mexico. Frank was a World War II Veteran and was given the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He is joined with his parents, Alfredo and Rita Ulibarri; sister, Libby Gifford; and brother, Alfredo Ulibarri. He is survived by his wife, Lupe Ulibarri; his children, Lucy Suarez, Henry Guzman, Sal (Chava) Guzman, Lilia Trejo, Frank L. Ulibarri and, Bonita Ulibarri; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; brother, Ernesto Ulibarri; sisters, Eugenia Lopez, Genoveva Chavez, Lucy Tafoya, Antonia Cabrera, and Rosina Ulibarri. He will be deeply missed by all. Final viewing will be held on Wednesday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at San Jose Catholic Church with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rudy Guzman, J.R. Trejo, Raul Trejo, Sal "Chavin" Guzman, Raul Angel Chavez, and David Guzman.
