Catherine Burke, a resident of Albuquerque since 1994 and a resident of Santa Fe since 1926, died peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 1998. She was born in Antonio, Colorado on June 6, 1910 to Robert Henry Beers and Catherine Denning Beers. She moved to Santa Fe with her family in 1926. She is survived by her son, Peter Burke and wife, Val Closson-Burke of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Colleen Burke of Albuquerque; nephews, Lewis Seward and wife, Earline of Austin, TX, Bill Brown and wife, Sandi of Tacoma, WA, Hank Beers and wife, Gretchen of Phoenix, AZ; and her niece, Zona Taylor of Albuquerque; and many grandnephews and grandnieces. Catherine was a legal secretary in Santa Fe for many years and worked for Gilbert, White and Gilbert; Seth, Montgomery and Andrews; and for the Honorable Oliver Seth until her retirement. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. There will be a memorial service on Monday, 11:00 a.m., September 29, 1998 at Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to your favorite charity in Catherine's name. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Mortuary of Santa Fe.

Ben O. Clark Jr., 88, passed away on Friday, September 25, 1998 following a six year battle with cancer. Ben was born on November 21, 1909, the son of Ben and Frana Clark in Clear Lake, South Dakota. He graduated from Lyons High School in Lyons, Nebraska in 1928, then attended the University of Nebraska and Wayne State Teachers College. He was married to Dorothy M. Story on March 27, 1935 in Odebelt, Iowa. She preceded him in death on July 16, 1997. During his working years, Ben was a real estate broker in Longmont, Colorado and owned and operated numerous motels and restaurants in Rapid City, SD, Ord, NE, Deming, NM and Dodge City, KS. He and Dorothy moved to Rio Rancho in 1988. Ben was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, the Albuquerque Shrine Club, the Rio Rancho Country Club, was a 65 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and belonged to the Rotary Club for 50 years. Ben enjoyed playing bridge, fishing and boating, and entertaining his friends. Besides his wife, Ben was preceded in death by his parents; and only sister, Loretta Clark. He is survived by one son, Rod Clark and his wife, Suzie of Albuquerque; two granddaughters, Allison Clark Yearout and husband, Mark of Sandia Park, NM and Meridith Clark of Ventura, CA; three great-grandchildren, Jourdan, Taylor and Logan Yearout of Sandia Park, NM, also numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by his many good friends in Rio Rancho. A Memorial service for Ben will be held on Monday, September 28, 1998, 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul's United Church in Rio Rancho with The Rev. Dr. Richard Freeman officiating. Marian"Mimi" Rubin Deitsch, age 65, of Albuquerque, died Saturday, September 19, 1998. The cause of death was multiple injuries suffered on Friday, September 18, 1998, when the car in which she was a passenger was struck by another vehicle. A graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, she also attended New York University's Graduate Schools of Business and Arts and Sciences and William Paterson College's School of Communications. An economist, journalist and public relations executive, her career included a stint at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. A civic leader and volunteer, Ms. Deitsch served as President of the Livingston (NJ) League of Women Voters, was a member of the Livingston Educational Liaison Committee and the Board of Directors of the Hemlock Farms (Pa) Community Association and was a Girl Scout leader at the Squiretown Elementary School. At the time of her death, she was a member of the New Mexico Symphony Guild and the Albuquerque Newcomers Club. She is survived by her son, Thomas A. Deitsch Jr. of Belle Mead, NJ; her daughter, Lisa Deitsch Taylor of Essex Falls, NJ and Jed B. Rogovin of Albuquerque, whom she loved. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be planned. Emaline C. Geha, 87, who had so many friends and relatives that only God could count the number, went to be with her Lord after dying of congestive heart failure at Lovelace Hospital on Friday. Emaline, known as"Grandma", is survived by a daughter, Ann Corn of Las Vegas, NV and her children, Robby and wife, Cliffa of Amarillo, TX and Jason and Leigh Ann of Las Vegas, NV and by her son, Richard and his wife, Linda and their children, Susan George and husband, Paul Tashjian of Tijeras, Tom Geha and his son, Rhone of Portland, OR, Cathy Eckert, her husband, Maj. Joe Eckert, their son, Ricky and daughter, Amy Emily of Colorado Springs, CO and James Geha and his wife, Kelly and son, Gabriel. She is also survived by a brother, Jimel Barrack; sister-in-law, Evelyn Barrack, both of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews, plus hundreds of cherished friends who made her last years on earth as comfortable as possible. Emaline came to Albuquerque in 1943 from Trinidad, CO, her birthplace. She and her late husband, George, owned and operated several grocery stores in Albuquerque until the mid-1960's. She later was assistant manager of Margo's LaMode in Corondao Center. She was a longtime member of Queen of Heaven Parish. Rosary will be recited Sunday, September 27, 1998, 7:30 p.m., at Hillcrest Funeral Home. Lois E. Hogan, 89, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque, died Wednesday, September 22, 1998. Mrs. Hogan is survived by her daughter, Gwynn Hogan Henline and husband, Scott of Avondale, AZ; son, Mike Hogan and wife, Darlene of Hemet, CA; three granddaughters; two grandsons; two step-grandsons; two step-granddaughters; ten great-grandchildren; four nieces; two nephews; and a half-sister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Raymond Hogan on July 14, 1998. Liborio"Leo" Imprescia, 68, a resident of Albuquerque for 17 years, died on Thursday, September 24, 1998 after a long and courageous battle with leukemia. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rosemary (Ro) Imprescia of the family home; sons, Michael Imprescia of California, Lawrence Imprescia, Mark Imprescia and wife, Andrea, and Peter Imprescia, all of Albuquerque; brother, John Imprescia of Albuquerque; and sister, Maria Cataldo and husband, Paul of New York. Mr. Imprescia was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served during World War II with the 1st Division Infantry,"Big Red One." He was employed for 22 years with the New York Sanitation Department. In 1961, he was awarded the Medal of Valor, the highest award given by the City of New York for rescuing a family from a burning building. In Albuquerque, he was employed for ten years as a Security Officer for Sunwest Bank. All at the flea market knew him as"Uncle Leo." Neta E. James, 75, a resident of Albuquerque since 1981, died Wednesday, September 23, 1998. She was born in Syracuse, Kansas on December 4, 1922. Neta met her husband, David in Albuquerque in 1940, and they were married on February 14, 1946. From July 1944 to March 1946, she served in the Women's Army Corps as an airplane and engine mechanic and was stationed in San Antonio, TX, Hobbs, and Long Beach, CA. Neta was a member of University Heights United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Women's Army Corps Veterans Association, the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 35 in Lovington, a weekly oil painting group, and bowling leagues. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, David P. James; daughters, Linda Peterson and husband, Gary of Albuquerque and Joyce Tallant and husband, Kevin of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Donavan Peterson and wife, Samantha of Evans Mills, NY, Nathan Peterson of Albuquerque, Luke Tallant, Ruth Hill and husband, David and Benjamin Tallant, all of Edmond, OK; great-grandchildren, Alexander and Katalina Peterson; brothers, Leo Williams of Montrose, CO, Doc Williams of Chino, CA, and Leonard Williams and wife, Harriet of Englewood, CO; sisters, Agnes Brown of Grand Junction, CO and Fern Nix of North Bend, OR; sisters-in-law, Dema Williams of Lamar, CO and Pauline Durrington of Chino, CA; many other relatives and friends. Charlie Packenham, 55, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Thursday, September 24, 1998 at his home in Cedar Crest, NM. He was an Industrial Arts teacher until his retirement in 1994 and an accomplished wood craftsman throughout his life. This loving husband, father, and grandfather is survived by his wife, Cathy, also of Cedar Crest; his daughters, Niki Courter and husband, Greg of Las Cruces and Char Castro and husband, Bobby of Roswell; and his 14-month old grandson, Quinlyn Charles Courter. Brian Sablatura, resident of Albuquerque and longtime citizen of Pearland, Texas, died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday evening, September 22, 1998 just four days shy of his 39th birthday. He is affectionately remembered for his irresistibly infectious laugh, his gentle demeanor, and his solid devotion to his family. He was also an avid fisher and outdoorsman, having attained an almost legendary reputation for remaining on the water without taking a break. Brian entered this world in Ganado, Texas on September 26, 1959. After growing up in Pearland, Texas and graduating from Pearland High School in the class of '78, he went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Cindye Arlene Rizzolo on June 5, 1982. Their union took place only days after he graduated from the University of Texas with a B.S. in Psychology. They relocated to Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he completed his Masters and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. During his internship at the Children's Psychiatric Hospital in Albuquerque, both Brian and Cindye fell in love with New Mexico. They found their way back in 1993 and decided to make it their home. In addition to Albuquerque, both have applied their professional skills in Georgetown, Texas and Yakima, Washington. For the past several years Brian had worked with school children in several rural school districts, including Grants, Zuni, and Cuba, New Mexico. As a member of the American Psychiatric Association, as well as the New Mexico Psychiatric Association, he was a staunch advocate for children and issues concerning their mental health. His professional passion for working with kids was eclipsed only by his unbridled devotion to his twin daughters. Brian was preceded in death by his father, Leon H. Sablatura and is survived by his wife of 16 years, Cindye; twin six month old daughters, Dawn and Sara; his mother, Claudie; his brother, David; and his sister, Lynne McNair. Surviving members of Brian's"second" family include parents, Ed and Ruth Rizzolo; brother, Edward Rizzolo; and sister, Beverly Clement. Brian is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends too numerous to mention. In a world where we all naturally strive to be cast in a favorable light, Brian Sablatura was one of those who gave off a light of his own. We will be forever illuminated for having spent time in his presence. Candace Carstens Smith, 100, an Albuquerque resident for 60 years, died Sunday, September 6, 1998, at the Montebello Retirement Community. Wife of the late Dane F. Smith, Professor of English, for whom the new classroom building at the University of New Mexico is named, she was the daughter of the founder of the Child Welfare League of America and the mother of both the current United States Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal and a teacher in APS. Born in Marshalltown, IA, during the year of the Spanish American War, Mrs. Smith attended Grinell College, graduated from Smith College in 1921, and , after working as a secretary and teacher, earned a Ph.D., in history in 1937 from Radcliffe College, now part of Harvard University. That year she married Professor Dane Smith and moved into the home they had built in"faculty row" on Roma Avenue, where she remained after her husband's death in 1968 until the residence was torn down in 1996 to make way for the new classroom building. She assisted Professor Smith in his research and writing and was largely responsible for the posthumous publication of his last book, Plays about the Theaters, Volume II. Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of the Tuesday Literary Club. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Candace Mize of Albuquerque; a son, Ambassador Dane F. Smith, Jr.; and four grandchildren. Whelan --
Francis Whelan, 68, a resident of New Mexico since 1970, passed away at his home on September 23, 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Maria in 1997. He is survived by his mother, Bridget Whelan of Dublin, Ireland; his son, John; daughters, Deirdre, Sheila, Elaine, Maura and her husband, Lt. David Larkin. Also grandchildren, Brian, Shauna, Rory, Dylan and Reilly. Francis was born in Dublin, Ireland on August 19, 1930 to Bridget and Patrick Whelan. He came to the United States via Canada and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1976, attaining the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Upon retirement, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 16 years. Francis believed the world was accessible through words, whether English or Gaelic, and instilled his love of reading and education in each of his children. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration later in life from the University of Albuquerque and thereby encouraged all through his example. He was an active member of the Irish Club of Albuquerque, as well as the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was also a fervent supporter of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd. We will miss you dearly Father,"To die, to sleep, perhance to dream"; an epitaph by which he will always be remembered. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at John XXIII Catholic Church, 4831 Tramway Ridge NE (west of Tramway between Montgomery and Manitoba) at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 26, 1998.
