Obituary for Whelan

Francis Whelan, 68, a resident of New Mexico since 1970, passed away at his home on September 23, 1998. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Maria in 1997. He is survived by his mother, Bridget Whelan of Dublin, Ireland; his son, John; daughters, Deirdre, Sheila, Elaine, Maura and her husband, Lt. David Larkin. Also grandchildren, Brian, Shauna, Rory, Dylan and Reilly. Francis was born in Dublin, Ireland on August 19, 1930 to Bridget and Patrick Whelan. He came to the United States via Canada and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1976, attaining the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. Upon retirement, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 16 years. Francis believed the world was accessible through words, whether English or Gaelic, and instilled his love of reading and education in each of his children. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration later in life from the University of Albuquerque and thereby encouraged all through his example. He was an active member of the Irish Club of Albuquerque, as well as the Ancient Order of Hibernians and was also a fervent supporter of the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd. We will miss you dearly Father,"To die, to sleep, perhance to dream"; an epitaph by which he will always be remembered. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at John XXIII Catholic Church, 4831 Tramway Ridge NE (west of Tramway between Montgomery and Manitoba) at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 26, 1998.
