Vertrees -- Sylvia I. Vertrees, 94, a resident of Albuquerque since 1983 and formerly of Bentonville, AR, died Thursday, March 9, 2000. She is survived by her son, Charles Vertrees and wife, Julia of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Julia Vertrees and husband, Greg Toney of San Antonio, TX, Charles Vertrees and Jan Fitcha of Tustin, CA, Patricia Espinosa and husband, Gilbert of Clayton, CA, Joseph Vertrees and wife, Janet of Cedar Crest, and Sylvia Crain and husband, Jim of Santa Fe; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Vertrees was preceded in death by her husband, Charles X. Vertrees; and son, Donald W. Vertrees. Mrs. Vertrees was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Spiro Chapter of the Eastern Star in Spiro, OK. Mrs. Vertrees was also a member of the Palo Duro Senior Center where she sang with the Choraleers. Services will be held Monday, 2:00 p.m., at Christ United Methodist Church, 6200 Gibson Blvd. SE, with Pastor Larry Castillo-Wilson officiating. Interment will take place Tuesday, 1:00 p.m., at South Park Cemetery in Roswell. Vigil -- Mrs. Virginia Vigil died Friday in Albuquerque at the age of 88. She is preceded in death by her husband, Filiberto Vigil; brother, Delfinio Martinez; sister, Augustina Martinez; parents, Petrita and Alfredo Martinez; son, Joe Vigil; and daughter, Mary Vigil. Mrs. Vigil is survived by her son, Santos Vigil; daughter, Crucita Gallegos; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Memorial Services for Mrs. Vigil will be held on Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. by Father Rodriguez. Inurement will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A Memorial Rosary will be held on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Salazar and Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW.

Brittain -- Homer E. Brittain, 86, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2000. Mr. Brittain was proud to serve 30 years for his country in both WWII and the Korean War as a Chief Warrant Officer in the US Army. Since retiring from the Military, his greatest joy had been as a Crossing Guard at Sombra Del Monte Elementary School. Each day, he enjoyed the happy faces of the students he protected as they crossed the street. During the 98-99 school year, Mr. Brittain was very honored to be the Crossing Guard of the Year. He will be greatly missed by all the lives, great and small, that he had touched. He is survived by his son, Jimmy R. Brittain and wife, Ruth of Green Cove Springs, FL; granddaughters, Pam Brittain, Gainsville, FL, Patty Wainwright and husband, Mitch, Salt Springs, FL, Peggy Brittain, Middleburg, FL and Paul Brittain, Tallahassee, FL. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2000, 2:00 p.m., at Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM. Brown -- Mrs. Emma S. Brown, 69, a resident of Albuquerque, was called to be with our Lord early in the morning of March 9, 2000. March 10 would have been her 70th birthday. Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, George B. Brown; two daughters, Jane Duran and husband, Dan and Pamela Coates and husband, Frank; her"adopted" daughter, Dollie Garcia; two sisters, Mary Brown and Rusila Zamora; four grandchildren, Scott Duran, Stephanie Padilla, Frankie Coates III and George Coates; two great-grandchildren, Rumaldo Padilla IV and Michael Padilla; her best friends, Mellie and Merline; many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family members. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Eufemia Zamora; her daughter, Sandra Gail Brown and her brother, Frank Zamora. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church, an active member of Tops, past Srd Queen at their State Conference, and was a co-leader in the Tops organization. Visitation will be Saturday afternoon, March 11, 2000, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Dr. SW. A Rosary will be recited Sunday, March 12, 2000 at 3:00 p.m. in the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Church, 5415 Fortuna NW, with a visitation after 2:30 p.m. Final visitation will be Monday morning in the church from 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. by Father Joel Garner. Interment will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Scott Duran, Frankie Coates III, George Coates, Phillip Brown, Robert Brown and Freddie Brown. Davies -- James L. Davies, 79, a resident of Albuquerque since 1959, died Friday, February 25, 2000 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Arnetta; and their three children, LaMerlis Wolf and husband, Ben of Carrollton, TX, Linda Strascina and husband, Peter, and Richard Davies, all of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Benny Wolf and wife, Michelle, Vincent Wolf and wife, Yvonne, Phillip Wolf and wife, Patience, all of Dallas, TX, Tony Vincent Strascina and wife, Linda of New York City, Francesca Strascina-Rieb and husband, Brian of Albuquerque; two great-grandchildren, Garrett Wolf and Jeremiah Wolf; four brothers and three sisters of James' original 13 siblings, all of the Ohio and Indiana areas. James was born into a farming family near Dillsboro, IN in 1920. He joined the Navy in 1940 and served as a First Class Gunners Mate aboard the Legendary USS Yorktown at the Battle of Midway. Both James and his younger brother, Harold, were on board the Yorktown when the ship went down under Japanese attack in the South Pacific on June 4, 1942. The two brothers only learned of each other's surviving the battle after being shipped back to the States some weeks later. After serving in the Navy for six years, James moved his family to Cincinnati, OH and later to Albuquerque where he ran his own carpentry and contracting business for nearly forty years. He will always be in the thoughts, prayers, and memories of his family and countless friends and acquaintances whose lives he has touched. Immediate family and close friends attended a memorial service and burial at Santa Fe National Cemetery on Friday. Dickerson -- Julius Paul (Tiny) Dickerson, 71, a resident of Albuquerque for 40 years, died Thursday, March 9, 2000. He is survived by his daughter, Paula Sue Ralston of Albuquerque; step-son, James Milton Higgins of California; grandchildren, Jeannette Kay Stanich and husband, Zion and Ginger Louise Brown, all of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Terry Isaac Brown, Thomas Isaiah Brown, Tyler Israel Brown, Ralston Keith Stanich, all of Albuquerque; and sister-in-law, Leona Dickerson of Forney, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Elaine Dickerson, son, Joseph Michael Dickerson; and daughter, Linda Kae Dickerson. Mr. Dickerson was a longtime member of Central Assembly of God and he was most recently attending Bethel Heritage Church. He formerly managed the Diamond Shamrock service station at Louisiana and Trumbull and later owned and operated Tiny's Automotive. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Monday, March 13, 2000, 7:00 p.m., at Bethel Heritage Church, 7800 Holbrook NE, with Glen Johnston, Walter Kaye and Reggie Greene officiating. Franchini -- Oreste J."Rusty" Franchini, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, 83, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, March 10, 2000. He is survived by his daughter, Lynne Peckinpaugh and husband, Dennis; granddaughter, Michele Peckinpaugh and Anthony Velarde, all of Albuquerque; grandson, David Peckinpaugh and wife, Maureen Tansey of St. Johnsbury, VT; sister, Jeanette Devoti and husband, Frank; sister-in-law, Mickey Franchini, all of Albuquerque and several nieces, nephews and special friends. Mr. Franchini was preceded in death 14 days prior by his wife, Rose D. Franchini; and brothers, Frank Franchini and Remo Franchini; and parents, Ovidio and Argia Franchini. He was formerly a co-owner of Franchini Brothers Delicatessen and Catering at Lomas and University, which was treasured by family, friends and patrons for many decades. Mr. Franchini was a WWII Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. He was in the European Theatre and was a Sgt. Major in a Combat Engineer Battalion. Mr. Franchini was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. He was also a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society; Knights of Columbus; Elks Lodge; UNM alumni where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity; and ItalAmer Men's Club. Rosary will be recited Sunday, 7:30 p.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE. Mass will be celebrated Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, with Father Francis X. Eggert, Celebrant. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum. Gabbard -- Myrtle Irene Gabbard, widow of James C. Gabbard Sr., died in her home on March 9, 2000. She is survived by her son, James C. Gabbard Jr.; and daughters, Sheryl L. Brewer and Laurence (Laurie) Coates; brother, Earl Thomas of Washington, DC; sister, Alene Martinez of Anadarko, OK; grandchildren, Edward (Eddie) Brewer IV, Rachel Mirelse; and her most loved and cherished great-grandchildren, Mekala Mirelse and Jaiden Isiah Brewer. Mrs. Gabbard, originally from Anadarko, OK, and her late husband, both federal careerist made Albuquerque their home. She was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Huddleston -- Buster Huddleston, 93, passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2000. He was born in Holdenville of the Oklahoma Territory on September 19, 1906. He was a longtime resident of Raton, and recently of Albuquerque. Mr. Huddleston is survived by his sister, Penola Allenbach of Sun City, CA, recently of Pueblo, CO; sons, David Huddleston and wife, Betty, Allan Huddleston and wife, JoAnn, all of Albuquerque, and Sid Huddleston and wife, Irene of Pueblo, CO; granddaughter, Lori Welsh and husband, Terry of Gilbert, AZ; grandsons, Robert Huddleston and wife, Mary of Albuquerque, Buster Huddleston and wife, Kelly of Houston, TX, James Huddleston and Jeffrey Huddleston, both of Pueblo, CO; great-granddaughters, Brianna and Amanda Huddleston, Morganne Welsh, Jordan Park, and Jamie Hosey; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Mae Huddleston; brothers, Sid Huddleston and Jack Huddleston; and sisters, Althea Kerns and Juanita Kline. In his youth, he was basketball star for Holdenville High School. Buster retired from the AT&SF Railroad in 1971. He was an active (now retired) member of the United Transportation Union (UTUAI). He lived with his son, Allan and family for the last six years. Buster was a member of the Gate City Masonic Lodge, #11 of Raton; the York Rite Commandary of New Mexico; Ballut Abyad Shrine and for the last 55 years; a Life Member of the Elks Lodge No. 865 of Raton. Graveside services will be held Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, with Rev. Bob Boyd officiating. Pallbearers will be Mr. Huddleston's grandchildren. Jeter -- Lois E. Jeter - (Pat) - AC5RM, 60 years old, born March 16, 1939, passed away unexpectedly on March 9, 2000 in Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Fred (Bud) Jeter; her mother, Lois Long; her daughters, Dorothy Jeter, Karen Hubert and husband, Louis, Lorene Rivera, and Freda Thomas and husband, Chris. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild due in October. The family will have a private service.
