LEMEN, BETTY Age 90, died on November 17, 2014 after a long illness. A long-time resident of New Mexico, she was born in Oklahoma and was raised in northern Missouri. She was one of five siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. She married Ura Lemen (Lem), the love of her life, and had four children, one of whom died shortly after birth. Her three children, Urey, Cliff and Ellen, survive her, as do three grandchildren, Kestrel, Marsh and Rachel. After her children were grown, Betty completed her BA in Education at UNM, and then earned her MA. She taught at Eldorado High School for several years and then retired in 1985. She was an avid reader, gardener and dabbled in several art forms such as painting and pottery. She was an intelligent, understanding, loving, and giving mother and grandmother, and she will be missed. The family wishes to thank the caregivers who so devotedly took care of her during her last years. Services will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014, 10:00 a.m., at FRENCH - Wyoming. WALKER, MARILYN J. Marilyn Walker, PhD. died peacefully at home Saturday, November 15, 2014, surrounded by her loving family. Marilyn was born January 27, 1932, in Lawrence, Kansas to Lawrence Walker and Ruby Stewart Walker. Truly a Renaissance woman, Marilyn was a psychotherapist, university professor, magazine publisher, hostess of a call-in radio show and a management consultant to law enforcement, banking, government, healthcare and grocery organizations. She had the gift of a truly remarkable voice and sang professionally when she was young. After her retirement from teaching and private practice, she devoted her time to writing. A member of Southwest Writers, she wrote "The Inner You," a regular column in New Mexico Woman from 2000 to 2005 and several books and short stories. She was interested in psychic and supernatural phenomena and issues of social justice, doing extensive research and writing on these topics. Predeceased by siblings, Lawrence Walker, and Velma Coleman, and daughter, Colleen Coe, she is survived by her siblings, Doris Bullock of San Angelo, Texas, June Hollenshead of El Paso, Texas, Marvin Zane Walker, of Albuquerque; daughters, Rachel Walker Al-Yasi of Albuquerque and Greta Baker, and her husband, Brinton of Accord, NY; grandchildren, Nara and Emma Baker, Shane and Brielle Coe, Zachary, Marilyn and Hasan Al-Yasi, and his wife Molly; and great-granddaughter, Willow Al-Yasi. CARPENTER, RUTH HANNAH Age 90, passed away Friday, November 7, 2014. She was born in Wilkes Barre, PA on April 21, 1924. She was preceded in death by her husband, F.R. Carpenter. Ruth is survived by her two children, F. Robert Carpenter and wife, Stacie, Heather Martinez; grandchildren, William Francis Kindell, Rachel Ann Martinez and Raymond Gomez; eight great grandchildren. Ruth enjoyed cake decorating and making pottery, she was a member of Rebecca and Old Fellow and a member of San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church. VIGIL, GUADALUPE Guadalupe Vigil, born in Puerto de Luna, NM on July 25, 1927 to Antonio Sandoval and Candida Sandoval-Maestas, died peacefully in her home Saturday, November 8, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Vivian Vigil and Rachel Cannon; sisters, Petra Lucero and Miquela Dodge; and two brothers, Jose and Eduardo Sandoval. She is survived by Juan Sandoval and his wife, Isabell; Jesus and his wife, Agueda; her sister, Victoria Line; two sons, Joseph Van Vigil and Vincent Vigil, and his wife, Teslin; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces. Guadalupe was a member of Queen of Heaven Parish for many years. LORETTO, NAPOLEON (NAP) age 90, passed away November 6, 2014. He was born September 1, 1924, in Jemez Pueblo, NM to Jose Manuel Loretto and Lucianita (Fragua) Loretto. He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII in Europe. Drafted at age 17 and unable to graduate high school, he recently received his diploma in June 2014. A hard worker his entire life, he had careers in the timber industry, Price's Dairy and the US Forest Service. He is survived by his children Victor, Rachel, Martin Paul and Melanie Loretto; his brother, Andy J. Loretto; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Nap was preceded in death by his loving wife, Andrea (Toya) Loretto and his sons Rudy and Stanley. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 7:00 a.m. at the San Diego Pueblo Church, Jemez Pueblo, NM. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be sent in his honor to the Walatowa Veteran's Association at PO Box 413 Jemez Pueblo, NM 87024. STEIN, FLO Flo Stein died peacefully on October 30, 2014, after a short illness, with family and her dear friend Kathleen Fagen and Dr. Kate Morris, MD at her side. She was preceded in death by her parents Sylvia and Harry B. Stein and sister, Marsha Lissauer. She is survived by her life partner Becky Bosch; daughter, Heather DeLair; granddaughter, Brandi Bynon DeLair; son, Tim DeLair, and wife, Mayra Valdez; her sons, Cruz, Uriel, and Sebastian. She was also survived by her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol and Richard Paul of Greensboro, NC, Dan and Genie Bosch of Racine, WI; first cousins, Donna and Ryan Madsen, Colleen and Kevin Drulet, Rachel Frausto, and Alecia Dowland and their daughter, McKenzie Rose, Marilyn McKernan, and Sister Rita Josephine McKernan; as well as many nieces, nephews, and loving friends. Flo was born in Philadelphia, PA in April, 1944 to a family devoted to an Orthodox Jewish life. After graduating from Glenside Weldon School and Abbington High School she moved to Albuquerque, NM to attend UNM and received her undergraduate degree in Anthropology. After graduating she returned to Philadelphia and received a Master's degree in Fine Arts and Education from St. Joseph's University. She valued her Jesuit education and integrated the value of intellectual pursuit for the rest of her life. During this time she also taught inner city children in a Philadelphia Head Start program. She had enough of New Mexico in her blood that she returned in 1970 and took on the project of helping her friend and former partner Joyce Price, MD to develop a large medical practice and vascular ultrasound lab in Farmington. She spent many years in the Farmington area developing her beautiful horse property, and doing dressage competition and competitive trail riding that took her throughout the country and world making many connections with people in the world of horses. She was instrumental in founding and developing the New Mexico Dressage Association with her longtime friend Bob Wilson, former owner of Double Arrow Ranch of Santa Fe. This multi-faceted woman also went on to receive a PhD in Philosophy from UNM. During that time she was a consultant with NASA, and the Canadian Space Program. She also worked with the space programs in Russia, Poland, and Japan, doing brain studies on astronauts before and after space travel to develop an understanding of the effects of zero gravity on the brain. After her career with NASA, Flo was clinical director for the Vascular Lab at UNM Hospital until her retirement in 2007. Throughout her life she had many other pursuits. She studied Classical piano with teachers from Curtiss Institute, and in her early twenties she studied the art of making gold and silversmith jewelry under close tutoring and mentoring of Wesley Emmons of Philadelphia. Her work had been displayed in the Albuquerque Natural History Museum and galleries in Albuquerque and Corrales. She also had interests in ballroom dance and most important Torah Study with Rabbi Chaim Schmuckler of Chabad of Albuquerque. She was a person who lived life with the belief that she should not pass up any opportunity to live as fully as possible. Her accomplishments were a testament to that belief. She will be missed by her many friends throughout the world. A memorial to celebrate her life will be planned and announced in the near future. PARRAS, MELISSA ANN Age 42, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida, returned peacefully to the Lord's hands, in the presence of her family on Friday, October 24, 2014 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Joe and Helen Parras and Procopio and Erma Martinez; and uncle Mark Parras. Melissa was born on August 3, 1972 and spent her childhood in Albuquerque's North Valley; Woodbridge, VA; and Los Alamos, NM. She is survived by her dearest friend, Meg McArthur of Jacksonville; parents Bill and Lydia Parras of Albuquerque; her sister Rachel Garcia (Carlos) of Albuquerque; brothers Jeffrey & Jonathan Parras of Albuquerque; sister Susan Parras of Austin, Texas; her beloved nieces Kristelle Parras and Haylee Garcia and nephew Isaiah Garcia. Melissa was loved by her aunts and uncles: Lydia and Orlando Romero, Ken and Janice Parras, Martin and Gladys Martinez, Michael and Vangie Montoya and many other close relatives and friends. Melissa lived her life with boundless energy and a joyful, compassionate spirit. She was known for her devotion to her friends and family and a willingness to help anyone. Melissa loved to travel and explore. Her adventurous spirit led her to enjoy many types of recreational activities like basketball, camping, boating, fishing, scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, parasailing, crewing hot air balloons, and riding her motorcycle. She was an avid cook and enjoyed posting pictures of her culinary creations and adventures on social media. She was especially fond of her dog, Cody. Melissa graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1990 and earned a bachelors degree from the University of Phoenix in Information Technology (IT). She continued to develop and apply her professional skills primarily in the healthcare and educational fields in New Mexico, Nevada, and Florida. Her recent position as Senior Business Analyst with Compass Consulting Group, was an employment opportunity that she cherished. Funeral services will be conducted in Albuquerque, NM: Rosary Service to be held on Sunday, November 16, 6:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE; and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Monsignor Bennett J. Voorhies on Monday, November 17, 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, 2532 Vermont St. NE.
