Downing -- Our beloved, Ellen J. Downing went with the dear Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2003. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death. Ellen was born in Shoemaker, New Mexico and was raised in Watrous, New Mexico. She was a longtime resident of Albuquerque. Ellen was a devoted wife, sister, Godmother, aunt and friend. She was a retired registered nurse of 27 years. Ellen was a dedicated member of the Duke City Sams Club and American Legion. She enjoyed ceramics and spending time with family. She was a lifelong Catholic, belonged to St. Charles and San Martin parish. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Dionicio and Lizzie Dominguez, sisters, Antonia and Rosie; brothers, Freddie, Margarito and Beningo. Ellen is survived by her beloved husband, Ralph Downing of 26 years of Albuquerque; brothers, Dennis Dominguez of El Paso, Albert and Tillie Dominguez of Watrous; sisters, Lucinda Archuleta of Watrous, Angie and husband, Donald LaLiberte of Albuquerque, Bella and husband, LeRoy Pino of Albuquerque, Dolores and husband, Milton Gentry of Watrous, Shirley and husband, Max Gallegos of Watrous and Velma Montoya of Albuquerque. She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Gladys Levesque, Gloria and husband, Mel Barber and Frances Wright; and many nieces, nephews and Godchildren. Cremation took place and Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, February 7, 2003, 9:30 a.m., at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 1818 Coal Place SE. Interment of cremated remains will take place at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A very special thank you to the Lovelace Hospice Group for all their attention and wonderful care. Sanchez -- Benny E. Sanchez was born May 4, 1927, in Puerto De Luna, County of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, New Mexico. Benny completed his earthly journey on The Feast of The Presentation of the Lord in The Temple, Sunday, February 2, 2003, in the Sanchez family home in Santa Fe, surrounded with much love and prayer. Baptized Eloy Benerito in the name of the Holy Trinity on June 9, 1927. His parents, Adolfo Sanchez and Ignacita Sais chose his maternal grandparents, Narcisso Sais and Juanita Nieto to be his Godparents. He was baptized in the church of Nuestra Senora del Refugio, Santa Rosa de Lima Parish. Adolfo Sanchez y Martinez died October 4, 1975, in Albuquerque, NM, he was son of Juan Lazario Sanchez y Chaves who died June 1920, San Rafael, NM; son of Jose Mariano Benito Sanchez y Padilla who died in 1871 in Seboyetta, NM, son of Jose Sanchez y Chaves who died in 1822 in Los Chaves, NM, son of Capt. Juan Cristobal Sanchez y Chaves who died February 27, 1798, in Tome, NM, son of Jacinto Sanchez de Inigo who died December 14, 1734, in Albuquerque, NM; he was a descendent of Aaron, the Tribe of Levi, son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Father Abraham. The Sanchez/ Chaves clan, above are"Sephardim" (Spanish Jews, book of Obadiah; verse 20) and according to the University of Arizona Data Base, Family Tree DNA.com, men of these families are"cohanim" of the priestly line of Aaron, brother of Moses. Benny graduated from Santa Rosa, NM, High School in 1946 and enlisted in the U.S. Army, 42nd Engineer Construction Battalion, stationed at Seoul, Korea. He performed duties as a court martial clerk, assisting investigating officers and preparing data from the information obtained. Reaching the rank of Sergeant, Benny was chief clerk in battalion headquarters in charge of nine military personnel at the time of his discharge. He was decorated in World War II with the Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal in Japan. Benny attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces from 1948 thru 1950 and then transferred to the University of San Francisco where he also worked at the naval shipyard. He was active in the union as a negotiator. On May 30, 1952, Benny married Aurora Maestas y Chaves from Colonias, NM, in the Roman Catholic Church of St. James, San Francisco, CA. Having moved back to New Mexico, Benny began working in Santa Fe for The State of NM in 1955 at the Motor Vehicle Dept. He was appointed commissioner in 1956 and served in this position until 1967. He was with the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Neighborhood Youth Corps. from 1967-1973 and with the State of NM Governor's Office of Employment and Training from 1973-1982 at which time he retired from state government. Benny became the Director of The AFL-CIO, Human Resources Development Institute (HRDI) in 1985 and served until the day of his death. Benny was deeply religious and loyal to the Holy Roman Catholic Church, especially serving at St. Francis Cathedral Parish in Santa Fe since the 1950s in various ministries: St. Vincent De Paul Society, Eucharistic Minister, Lector/Commentator, Holy Name Society and Hospital Ministry. Benny became a Third Order Carmelite Member in 1958 and was very faithful to perpetual adoration and Marian devotions. Benny was preceded to our Father in Heaven by his loving wife of 48 years, Aurora; his parents, Adolfo and Ignacita Sanchez; brothers, Fred Luciano Sanchez (May 14, 1945, 1st Marine Div., Okinawa) and Chris Sanchez; baby-son, Johnny; and baby-grandson, Jefferey Gonzales. He is survived by children and grandchildren, Diane and husband, Steve Gonzales and daughters, Jessica and Stephanie of Santa Fe, Joyce Sanchez, teacher at Salazar School in Santa Fe; and Father Bill Sanchez of St. Edwin Roman Catholic Parish, South Valley, Albuquerque, NM; He is also survived by his sister, Amelia Sanchez of Albuquerque; brothers, Deacon Arsenio Sanchez and wife, Dora of Puerto de Luna, NM and Secundino Sanchez and wife, Sylvia; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and co-workers. The family, with heart-felt sincerity, wishes to thank Dad's co-workers at HRDI for their fierce loyalty and unmatched love for Benny. They would also like to thank Dr. Paul Kovnat, Sr., Dr. Tim Lopez and the Odyssey Hospice staff, especially Diane and Susanne. Pallbearers will be Benny's co-workers, Mike Luna, Fidel Montoya, Rudy Lujan, Patrick Newman, Carlos Gonzales and Kent James. Honorary Pallbearers will be The Honorable Supreme Court Judge Patricio Serna, former Governor, Bruce King, Ruben Miera, Dora Martinez, Adrie Maez, Gloria Vigil, Chris Montano, Steve Largomasino, Robert Padilla, Julian Gallegos, Ralph Nava, Carlos Duran and Robert Lopez. The Holy Rosary and"Velorio" will be recited by Benny's brother, Deacon Arsenio Sanchez from Santa Rosa de Lima Parish today, February 4, 2003. Visitation will begin at 6:30 p.m., with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m., at St. Francis de Assisi Cathedral in Santa Fe. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Francis de Assisi Cathedral. Benny's body will await Jesus, The Messiah's, second coming, in the family crypt at Rosario Cemetery. COME LORD JESUS! Marez -- Alejandro V. Marez, age 78, passed away February 1, 2003 after an illness. Alejandro was born June 6, 1924 in Deramadero, NM to the home of Luis and Aurelia Velasquez Marez. He was reared and attended schools in Encino. Alejandro served in the United States Army as a Military Policeman. After he was released from the Army he worked for several ranches in the Encino area. He married Isabel Montano on April 26, 1943 in Vaughn, NM. Alejandro also worked for the Railroad and retired from the New Mexico State Highway Department as a Maintenance Supervisor in 1982 after 26 years of service. He enjoyed his animals, fishing, hunting and riding horses. Alejandro was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Encino. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Isabel, his brothers, Luis Marez, Marcos Marez, Jacobo Marez, his sisters, Rosa Montoya, Francis Gonzalez and Guadalupe Marez. Survivors include his children, Leandro Marez and wife, Viola of Moriarty, Jose Alejandro Marez, Jr. and wife, Josie of Albuquerque, Frank G. Marez and wife, Viola of Moriarty, Richard Marez and wife, Eloisa of Albuquerque, Jose Bonifacio Marez and wife, Esther of Magdalena, Clario D. Marez and wife, Norma of Sedillo Hill, Roberta Marez of Albuquerque and Robert"Bobby" Marez of Encino. Also surviving are his sisters, Julia Martinez of Encino, Dulcinea Garcia and husband, Ralph of Willard and Lala Apodaca of Clovis; 20 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. Rosary services will be conducted on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Encino. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. also from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church with Father John Jasinski officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at the Encino Cemetery. Serving as Pallbearers will be Greg Marez, Michael Marez, Adrian Marez, Clario Marez, Jr., Luisa Marez, Christell Marez, Matthew Marez and Jerome Marez. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great grandchildren and Raymond Gallegos. Romero -- Julian R. Romero, age 85, beloved husband, DAD, Grandpo and Great-Grandpo was called home to be with the Lord our Savior on Friday January 31, 2003, following a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Deluvina Romero, six daughters, Chavela Barela and husband, Ray, Katherine Sanchez, Eva Ortiz and husband, Phillip, Marie Barela and husband, Gilbert, Angela Montoya and husband, Eddie, and Debbie Sisneros and husband, Alex; four sons, Pablo Romero and wife, Adela, Michael Romero and wife, Eliza, Anthony Romero, Julian Romero Jr. and wife, Gloria; twenty-nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation for Mr. Romero will begin at 6:00 p.m. Sunday February 2, 2003 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Manzano, New Mexico with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning February 3, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. also at Our Lady of Sorrows with Father David Gallegos officiating. He is preceded in death by his father, Juan Isidro Gallegos; sister, Virginia Crawford; and two grandsons, Jordan and Adrian McDermott. Garcia -- Dan G. Garcia, 86, passed away Monday, January 27, 2003, after a brief illness. He was born in Bernalillo, August 12, 1916 and grew up in San Ysidro. Dan worked in the Naval Shipyards in California during WWII, then returned to Albuquerque after the war to raise his family. He was employed by ACF and retired from General Electric in 1981. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Laura V. Garcia; his daughters, Pauline Breidenbach and husband, Tony, Linda Gallegos and husband, Herald, and Virginia McIntyre; and by his son, Dan R. Garcia. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Eric Gallegos. He was an active member of the Sangre De Cristo Catholic Community. Dans family was foremost in his life and his greatest achievement in life was his ability to spread love and kindness to whomever he met. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, January 30, 2003, at 10:30 a.m., at Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church, 8901 Candelaria Rd. NE, with Father Albert Podvin, Celebrant.
