RUBIO, EDWARD LOUIS Edward Louis Rubio, 84 of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Edward was born on April 21, 1930 in Las Vegas, NM to Timoteo and Virginia (Mondragon) Rubio. He graduated from Robertson High School in Las Vegas, and later attended Western NM University in Silver City. Edward was a military veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. Edward is survived by his wife, Priscilla Rubio (Greenier), whom he knew from childhood in Las Vegas. Edward and Priscilla united in their 20s and moved to Albuquerque in 1955, where they settled to raise a large and extended family. Edward owned and operated the Yucca Lounge on Central for more than 35 years, an historical landmark in Albuquerque for decades. Edward loved New Mexico, its natural beauty, and all that it had to offer his beloved family. Edward was a devout Catholic and took pride raising his children in a religious household, steeped with traditions unique to New Mexico. Edward's extended family and passel of friends will all remember him as a loving father, generous man, friend to all, and pillar of strength to those who loved him most. These few words cannot express how many lives Edward touched in his 84 years of life. He will be mourned by many, missed by legion, and remembered by all. In addition to his loving wife Priscilla, Edward is survived by sons Edward George, Robert, and David Rubio, all in Albuquerque, Rodney and Johnny Lozano in Alaska; daughters Patricia Rubio, Gina Rubio, Loretta (and Charlie) Steele; Nancy (and B. Julian) Serna, and Pinky Salvo, also in Albuquerque, Karesse (and Bob) Grenier in New York, Elaine (and John) Graham in Farmington, and Pauline (and Robert) Ryan in Arizona; and younger brother John G. Rubio of Albuquerque. One of Edward's great joys in life was his 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom he adored. Edward was preceded in death by his daughter, Nadine Lozano, his two grandsons Jonathon DeVolk and John-Michael Graham, brothers David, George, Tim, and Carlos Rubio, and sisters Frances Montoya and Josephine Rubio. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at FRENCH - Wyoming. The mass and funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Queen of Heaven Church, 5311 Phoenix, Ave. N.E. in Albuquerque, with interment to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Special thanks is extended to Brenda Solano and her family for the loving care they provided to Edward during the last years of his life. MONETTE, KENNETH MARK Kenneth Mark Monette, 76, died Thursday morning, January 1, 2015 in the ICU of Lovelace Hospital downtown. He was born February 7, 1938 in Bennington, Oklahoma in the Oklahoma Choctaw Nation. His formative years through the 8th grade were in Muskogee, OK. where he attended Sacred Heart Catholic School. He was a paperboy, Boy Scout and an altar boy. His high school years were spent at St. Paul's High School in Marty, South Dakota on the Yankton Sioux Reservation. There he excelled in in both academics (esp. geometry and algebra) and sports. He was frequently on the Honor Roll. He graduated in 1956 and was awarded an Xavier University Scholarship. In 1955 he was named Most Valuable Player at the Yankton Quarter-Back Club Banquet. While away at school during his junior year in 1955, the family moved to Albuquerque, becoming one of the original 800 families of Princess Jeanne Park. He began his Army career August 17, 1956. He retired as Sgt. 1st Class on November 30, 1979 at Fort Bliss, Texas. His Army adventures included being a paratrooper and a Military Police Officer. He completed 2 tours in Korea and 3 in Vietnam and received numerous accolades including medals for his service. After retiring from the military he spent the rest of his life as a security guard. While stationed in Germany he met and married his wife, Irmela "Amy" Sydor. Preceding Ken in death were four children: Ralph, Sandra, Anthony, and Sharon; parents, Walter and Emma Monette; and brothers, Michael and David...The latter four are buried at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M. Surviving Ken is his wife of 55 years, "Amy"; and his daughter, Audrey Bailey and husband Vernon; five sisters Donna Monette, Patricia "Patty" Riordan and husband Mike, Martha "Marty" Monette, Anne "Bebe" Monette, Carol Monette; and two brothers, John and Neil. He is also survived by four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. The funeral was held Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, N.M.

PAVIA, ELISA BACHICHA is survived by three children, Annette (Andy), Jeannette (Randy) and Pablo; three grandchildren, Janelle, William and Andrew; and one great-granddaughter, Kendyl; siblings, Frances, Angie, Marta, Pablo, David, Isabel, Lydia, Esteban and Evon; as well as many, many nephews, nieces and her special friend, Arthuro. SALAZAR, ROSALIE I. was born on May 4, 1936 in Albuquerque and passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2014. She will be remembered as a loving mother, who loved to cook and spend time with her family. Rosalie is survived by three children, Vivian Brenn and husband Bill of ABQ., Paul L. Salazar of ABQ., David A. Salazar and wife Nancy Rivera of ABQ.; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren as well as many other family members and friends who loved and will miss her. HUGHES, MAURICE L. Maurice L. "Johnny" Hughes, age 94, New Mexico native, died peacefully with his family around him on January 5, 2015. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Jettie Estes Hughes; daughter, Jayne Bullington (David); son, John Hughes (Judy); grandchildren, Mark Hughes (Danica), Erica Barajas (Mark), and Tracy Bullington; and great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Alexandra and Jonathan Hughes. He is also survived by brother, Dr. Lloyd Hughes, Cedar Crest, NM; and sister, Ruth Cook, Albuquerque; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Andrew Jackson (Jack), Leon, Walter and William; sisters, Gertrude, Lorine, and Juanita. Maurice was born January 24, 1920 in Moriarty, NM, the fifth of ten children, to Walter M. and Effie L. Hughes. Maurice graduated from Moriarty High School's second graduating class of eight students in 1937. He obtained a B.S. in Biology with a pre-med emphasis from the University of New Mexico in 1941, working his way through UNM, much of the time at the library, appropriate to his love of books and history. After UNM, World War II called instead of medical school. Brother Jack suggested they sign up for the Army Air Corps for their service, and they did so together. Maurice attended flight training at several locations in Texas, qualified for multi-engine aircraft, and almost immediately left for Africa where he flew the famous C-47 "Gooney Bird" from Ghana to Egypt to India and the Arabian peninsula. He carried fuel, food, supplies and military pay and expenses in support of the war. He returned to the US in 1944 where he continued to fly transport aircraft in support of the war effort and the development what became the U. S. Air Force in 1946. He met Jettie in 1944 at a servicemen's social event at a Memphis, TN, church, when she was working in Finance for the Department of Defense. They were married in Memphis on August 18, 1945, and he elected to remain with the new USAF after the war ended. He served as an Assistant Professor/AF ROTC instructor at NM State University in Las Cruces. He then served in flying and command positions in the southwest, south, Goose Bay, Labrador ("Twice", Jettie always reminds everyone), Texas and California. In 1968, he retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service. After retirement, Johnny spent a year adding on to their home in Albuquerque, working with his brother, Walter, and also completing Walter's cabin. Johnny and Jettie volunteered for many years with Central United Methodist Church as key staff of the fund-raising Thrift Shop. They spent many wonderful years traveling throughout the U.S. with their travel trailer, including a Hughes siblings' caravan to Alaska. He un-retired to work for Maisel's Indian Jewelry and Crafts as silver comptroller, after joining other Hugheses to create silver and turquoise jewelry. He volunteered for over 30 years for the IRS and AARP doing free tax preparation for seniors, and served as an instructor for the 55-Alive seniors safe driving program. He and Jettie also volunteered at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta from 1985-1998. Johnny and Jettie spent the last 16 years at Manzano del Sol and the Woodmark assisted living communities, where they made good friends. Johnny was loved and respected by friends and staff for his loving care and dedication to Jettie. He loved reading, history, their dachshunds, turtle rescue, telling jokes, and making the world a cleaner and kinder place. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, January 24, 2015, 2:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Boulevard NE in Albuquerque, followed by a reception. His ashes will be interred at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with full military honors. LAZZELL, CARLEEN (CRISP), PHD Dr. Carleen (Crisp) Lazzell, PhD was born April 7, 1940, in Clayton, New Mexico to Ira Vincent Crisp and Irene Cecilia (Christian) Crisp and died on Thursday, January 15, 2015, in Clayton, New Mexico. Carleen was loved and respected by so many people from so many walks of life. Her passion for learning and her genuine love of others had a great influence on her children and her grandchildren. Always pursuing her education, Carleen attended college while raising her family & over time earned her BA from UNM (University of New Mexico) while at the same time; Ruleen and Renee were completing their BA's from NMSU (New Mexico State University) and WVU (West Virginia University). Both Carleen & Ruleen then shared the journey of pursuing their Masters with Carleen earning her Master's from UNM in Early Architecture of New Mexico & Ruleen from NMSU with Masters in Public History. Dr. Carleen Lazzell PhD went on to complete her Doctorate at UNM in Architectural History in 1996. With an amazing ability to juggle family, be a professional editor and pursuing higher education, Carleen became the associate editor of New Mexico Architecture in 1984 - a glossy magazine highlighting New Mexico, both past and present. Another work of love, authored by Carleen Lazzell and Melissa Payne was published in 2007, "Historic Albuquerque - An Illustrated History". For many years until her passing, she has been an editor of La Cronica de Nuevo Mexico. Carleen loved her work & provided a quality publication for those with a shared love of New Mexican history. She worked tirelessly to gather articles and photos from others as well as provide her own original research on historical subjects surrounding New Mexican history always with the goal in mind to bring New Mexico history to life and preserve events that would otherwise be lost. She married Rue Lazzell on December 26, 1959 and he preceded her in death on June 17, 2008. In addition to her husband, Carleen was preceded in death by her parents, I.V. and Irene Crisp of Clayton, NM, her brother, Billy James Crisp, Clayton, NM, her father-in-law, Rufus F. Lazzell, Jr., and mother-in-law, Mildred Ray Lazzell, a brother-in-law, Charles T. Lazzell and her grandparents, Ira and Minnie Crisp and Sam and Victoria Christian. Carleen is survived by two daughters, Ruleen Lazzell White and granddaughters Claire Renee White and Sophie Irene White of Mesilla, NM and Renee Lazzell DiBello and her husband Samuel DiBello of North Bend, WA, and their five children and seventeen grandchildren; three brothers-in-law, Carl L. Lazzell and his wife Anna Louise of San Antonio, TX, Duane P. Lazzell and his wife Sally Wilts of Bruceton Mills, WV and David W. Lazzell and his wife Barbara Walters of Morgantown, WV and their families; two sisters-in-law, Patricia H. Crisp-Podzemny and her husband Gene and family of Clayton, NM and Dorothy Lazzell. The family asks that memorials be made in Carleen's memory to the Herzstein Memorial Museum in Clayton, New Mexico or to the charity of your choice. MIXON, RANDALL was born on October 10, 1960 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Died 1/1/2015 also in Albuquerque, NM. Randall was preceded in death by father Donald Mixon, and brother Wesley Mixon. He is survived by mother Yvonne Padilla of Medford, OR; brothers David Mixon of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Stephen Mixon of Medford, OR, and Douglas Mixon of Gloucester, VA. No services will be held. SMITH, JUDITH KAY COLE Age 71, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away on December 22, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, David Smith; her two children Jennifer Rosenbaum and husband Marc of San Diego, CA, and Jeff Smith and wife Lisa of San Francisco, CA; her three grandchildren Carter and Cameron Rosenbaum and Ainsley Smith. Judi was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on May 15, 1943 to Claude Franklin Cole and Opal Stoker Cole. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1961 and graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education in 1966. She went on to obtain a Master of Arts from UNM in 1979 and spent over 30 years leading and teaching business education programs in New Mexico, Arizona and California. Judi was an amazing teacher and made a difference in hundreds of students' lives, especially thru her leadership as an adviser to high school students in Future Business Leaders of America. She was an avid reader and writer, loved to cook, travel and work on home improvement projects. Most importantly she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor will be missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 2:00 pm at the Trinity Family Church located at 6101 Paradise Blvd, NW, Albuquerque, NM 87114. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Family Church.
