ALDERETE, JUAN age 97, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 14, 2015. To his large and distinguished family, he left a legacy of ambition, of the entrepreneurial spirit and of success. Our Dad, Juan Alderete was born September 3, 1917, in Chilili, NM. His father, Abran, obtained land in Escobosa, NM through the Homestead Act of 1919, and his mother, Concepcion Maldonado Alderete was a Chilili Land Grant heir. As a young boy, our Dad enjoyed riding horses on his family's ranch in the East Mountains of Albuquerque and in his heart and manner of dress, he was a "Cowboy" through and through! Juan demonstrated his love for learning throughout his life. He finished first in his class in the eighth grade, and upon this foundation, went on to found a successful business, A & A Electric Company in the early 1960s. He had a smile that lit up a room and his beautiful blue eyes would sparkle with his wit and laughter. As an Atrisco Land Grant heir, he will be buried at San Jose de Armijo Cemetery. Juan is survived by his four children, Frank and wife, Rose, Carmen, Rosalie, Elizabeth Ann and husband, Bart; brothers, Salvador and Federico; grandchildren; great-grandchildren-great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and all who love him dearly. He was preceded in death by his son, Sam in 2005. Visitation will be Sunday, January 18, 2015, from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 3:00 p.m. by Deacon Michael Wesley. Final visitation will be Monday, January 19, 2015, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, 2150 Raymac SW with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the San Jose de Armijo Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great-grandsons. Once he was asked, "what was his advice to live a long and healthy life? "his answer was, "to read everyday, work hard, and keep moving!" He enjoyed daily walks on the ranch and tending to his garden. An avid reader of the daily newspaper, he was always well informed on current events, happening both locally and around the world. He was proud of his Basque heritage and of being a member of one of the founding families of Albuquerque, NM. A man of great dignity, our Dad and his life will inspire future generations for years to come, and his legacy will live on. Please visit www.gabaldonnortuaryinc.com to sign the online guestbook. BECK, ADELIADA AND CONRAD In Loving Memory of our Mother Adeliada J. (Tafoya) Beck 3/7/1931 - 1/15/2012 In Loving Memory of our Brother Conrad A. Beck 5/30/1963 - 2/23/2013 Treasures have been lost through our eyes, our mother and brother are no longer with us on this earth. They left for a better place we hear, where there is no pain, there is no fear. We shared our lives together with many ups and downs, but, the love that grew between us was so very strong. The house is so quiet now that you are gone, but, your love still lingers all around. We miss you more than ever, no one will ever know our heartache that we carry, when you left, you had to go, we know because God told us so. Some comfort we have is that you have each other and we too, will see you soon. Until we meet again, may you rest in peace. Your loving family, forever in our hearts and thoughts!

FRAHM, DARLENE ELIZABETH Darlene Elizabeth Frahm translated on January 5th, 2015 while visiting her daughter and family in AZ. Born on Monday, December 25, 1923, in Scottsbluff County, Nebraska, she was the daughter of P.B. (Jim) and Sarah Jane Hacker (Sadie) Goff. She was named by her 4 year old brother, who declared, "hello darlin" when presented with his Christmas baby sister. Darlene grew up in Minatare, Nebraska. She played trombone, was the drum major, cheerleader, and graduated from Minatare High School. Her parents moved to Portland, OR to support the war effort after her graduation, and Darlene graduated from Multnomah Junior College. She graduated from University of Colorado, Boulder with a B.A. and obtained a teaching certificate from Chadron State College. She later earned her M.A. in Education at Chadron. While in Chadron, she met Lloyd Harold Frahm. They married in Minatare on July 6, 1947, and moved to Riverton to teach. They were married for 59 years at the time of Lloyd's death. Darlene took time off to raise their children, Gretchen (Greg) Lamberth, David (Jill), and William (Barbara). She returned to teaching, spending 20 years at Jackson Elementary School in 2nd grade. Her mottos were posted in her classroom, "love one another", and "treat others as you want to be treated". Even during her last days, she commented that it was important that we love one another. She loved children and teaching 2nd grade children to read was her passion. Over the years, she received thank you notes from former students, and those letters warmed her heart. She made a difference in many people's lives. Darlene was a very intelligent, inquisitive, curious, friendly, encouraging and persistent person. She was always interested in people and very patriotic. She wrote letters to many WWII service members (many she never met), so that they received mail. She continued to be an avid letter writer, keeping in touch with family and friends. She made sure we knew she was thinking of us, sending encouraging words, and thoughts on the meaning of life. Darlene was involved with the community of Riverton in her younger years, as a member of the Progressive Women's Club, The American Red Cross Disaster Preparedness, lifetime member of the Eastern Star, served as Job's Daughters Bethel Guardian, was a member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution as a result of her extensive research in Goff family genealogy, a co-leader in 4-H and was an active member of St. James Episcopal church. Darlene loved her 5 grandchildren: Jamaica (Daniel) Hansen, Jennifer (Jimmy) Lindell, Julie Frahm all of St. George, UT, and Sarah (Jennifer and Taylor) and Geoffrey (Lindsay) Lamberth of Tucson, AZ; and her eight great-grandchildren: Michael, Haleigh, Mya, and Jaida Hansen, Carter, Taylor and Madison Lindell, and Scott Lamberth. Darlene is survived by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren; nephew Carl (Becky) Goff; nieces Cheryl (Ralph) Morrow, Linda Goff, Merri Susan (David) Brown; and grandnieces Valerie (Mark) Lescroart and Lisa Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Lloyd H. Frahm, brother James Halsey Goff and wife Jean, in- laws Lois and Harry L. Burns. Carolyn B. Tyler, a columnist for the Riverton Ranger, wrote a column on February 14, 1992 after a US Army Field Band concert at Central Wyoming College. The band had played a medley of marches and the conductor invited each person to stand as their favorite branch of the military was saluted. Carolyn stated, "I wish I had stood beside Darlene Frahm. While others stood for their 'favorite' branch of the military, Darlene Frahm stood throughout the entire military medley. Maybe we choose up sides too much - be it by military branch, race, or creed. I wish I'd stood beside Darlene. Her humanity touched my soul." Her humanity touched us all. A family gathering will occur in AZ on January 31st and a memorial will take place in Riverton once Wyoming defrosts. Abbaloobala!

GILLILAND, ISABELLE JUNE Isabelle June Stockdill Gilliland died January 12, 2015 in Albuquerque. Isabelle was born in Bellflower, CA in 1922 to the late LJ and June Maldonado Stockdill (Venn). She grew up in Albuquerque and Wagon Mound, graduating from Albuquerque High School in 1940. In her teens, she held a number of jobs in the city, the first working for the Giomi Brothers, but seemed to find a home at KGGM radio. During World War II, her clerical job there launched her onto the airwaves, where her strong voice and quick sense of humor made her a success among the daytime audience. Later in the war, she moved to California and found a job at CBS Radio in Hollywood. Still later, she moved to Juneau, AK, to work for the US Treasury Department. Returning to Albuquerque before War's end, she was employed at Sandia Base for several years. It was there, in 1950, that she met Paul Gilliland. They married on St. Patrick's Day, 1951. In 1953, the Gillilands left Albuquerque for Norway, beginning an odyssey of military duty stations that would last seventeen years, and take them from Europe back to California and from end to end of the continental United States. Finally, in 1970, the family returned to Isabelle's beloved hometown and her extended family. Once all of her seven children were in school, Isabelle went back to work for KGGM Television's traffic department, where she worked through the 1970s. After her retirement, Isabelle found time to travel and to indulge her lifelong love for dancing. She was, for many years, a fixture at the Highland Senior Center, where she volunteered in many capacities. Isabelle was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Gilliland. She is survived by her brother, John L. Stockdill, of California; her seven children, Mark Gilliland, Terrance Gilliland and his wife, Lois, and Shawn Gilliland and his fiancee Felicia Dooley, all of Albuquerque; Patrick Gilliland, of California; Carmel Chapline and her husband, Michael, Mary Erin Grosso and her husband, Michael, and Mary Celeste Bradley and her husband, Charles, all of San Antonio, Texas; and 16 grandchildren, Heather Gilliland, Leah Gallegos, Bryan and Conor Gilliland, Karen Alba, Andrew and Michael Chapline, Mikaela, Ryan, and Noelle Grosso, Matthew, Adam, Jacob, Jeffrey, Steven and Clayton Bradley, and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 19 at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, with recitation of the Rosary to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Annunciation Church on Tuesday, January 20, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Monsignor Voorhees officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Mark, Terrance, Patrick and Shawn Gilliland, Michael Grosso, Charles Bradley, and Michael Chapline. KOLB, GLORIA HESTON Gloria went on to her next adventure on January 5, 2015 after a short illness while in Durango, CO. Gloria was born August 20, 1925 in Kanorado, Kansas and grew up in Goodland, Kansas just 17 miles away. Her father Leroy Heston and her grandfather John F Heston were prominent bankers in Goodland and according to her she had "the perfect childhood". The home she grew up in is now on the National Historical Register and known as "The Handy House". She met her first husband Charlie Vaughan in Goodland while he was attending Glider Pilot School in 1943 and after a whirlwind romance they eloped. After the War they lived in Houston, TX then moved to the Heston family ranch above Tiny Town, CO. After living in Denver and Ft Collins they settled in Phoenix, AZ. Their marriage ended in 1967. She met and married Albert Kolb in 1968 - they lived in Al's home in Monterey, CA for the next 27 years and traveled the world living in Australia for 2 years - then moved to Albuquerque in 1995. During the summers from 1977 to 1982 they built their beloved cabin north of Durango .... no small feat since they built it with no electricity and no running water. With the help of the "men of the mountain" every inch was built by hand. Gloria and Al both believed in "giving back" and as a team they worked tirelessly for their community. They were named volunteer of the year at University Hospital, served as block watch captain and neighborhood watch captain for 15 years. She was a former member of the Sierra Vista Civitan Club and the original South Valley Civitan Club. Her pet project (and pet peeve) was keeping the West Bluff Park clean. Every morning she picked up bags of trash because she said the City of Albuquerque didn't know what they were doing! She delivered all drugs, weapons and ammunition to the police department. She did everything in her power to reunite the owners of lost wallets, purses, cell phones and class rings. She is survived by her daughter Twila Donaldson of Albuquerque, NM; sons Terry Vaughan and Tim Vaughan of Durango, CO, Steve Kolb (Rilla) of Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren; and her sister Twila Cebulski. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Her ashes will be scattered along with Al's who went ahead in 2013 and their many beloved dogs in the place that they built with their own 2 hands. No flowers please - if you want to honor her please pick up the next piece of litter that you see and put it in a trash container.

SZALAY, ELIZABETH M.D. 1953 - 2014 Dr. Elizabeth Szalay, a professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of New Mexico School of Medicine, died peacefully December 29, 2014 at her home in Albuquerque. Elizabeth lived and died with dignity, faith and courage. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ken Gilman; her stepchildren Juliane Taylor Shore (Adam), Joel Taylor (Brittany), and Luke Gilman (Beth); her grandchildren Stella Shore and Koa Taylor; her brother Tom Szalay and her sisters Midge Mollenkopf (Al), and Judy Dvorak (James); her in-laws Sue and Peter Gilman; her sister-in-law Cathy Guinan; and many nieces, nephews, close friends and colleagues. She is predeceased by parents George and Gizella Szalay and brother, Jerry Szalay. Elizabeth was born in Los Alamos February 2, 1953. Always a star pupil, she graduated from University of New Mexico, obtained her medical degree from UNM, did her residency in San Antonio, a fellowship at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas and started her medical practice at Vanderbilt in orthopaedic specializing in pediatric orthopaedic - at that time not usually a field open to smart, attractive blondes. She managed to excel through exceptional ability and her clear understanding of medicine. She formed life-long friendships with her fellow doctors and their families and honored a decades-long annual Christmas shopping weekend with the wives of her long-suffering fellow medical residents from her early career. Elizabeth moved to Beaumont, TX where she practiced with the well-respected Beaumont Bone and Joint Institute, and where she formed a lasting and loving relationship with stepchildren Juliane and Joel Taylor and very close friendships with neighbors, colleagues, patients, and hospital staff. She was an active supporter of the arts and many non-profit organizations. After returning to New Mexico, her wonderful life became more blessed. She re-met and married former classmate, Ken Gilman, who brought into the relationship his extended family, including his son Luke. Her career flourished as a professor, mentor, surgeon, researcher and writer. She served as the head of Pediatric Orthopaedic surgery at UNM Carrie Tingley Hospital and as professor of orthopaedic Surgery at University of New Mexico School of Medicine, all the while seeing patients, mentoring and training students, interns, and residents, and excelling in academic research and writing. She served as a national board examiner for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and as a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, she served on the national Board of Councilors and the Women's Health Advisory Board. She was a national spokesperson for Culturally Competent Care in orthopaedics. She published extensively in medical journals, including seminal work on osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency in children and on orthopaedic issues found in Native American children. She participated in eight surgical missions to Ecuador caring for underserved children in that country. She performed surgery in remote areas of New Mexico helping children unable to travel to hospitals for care. In her practice in Albuquerque, as well as her prior private practice in Beaumont, Texas, she willingly cared for those who could not pay. She was gifted, energetic, intelligent and generous with her time and enormous talents. Elizabeth dealt with her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer the same way she dealt with other obstacles in life. The disease never defined her; she put it in its place and kept it there as long as she could. In the meantime, she continued to see patients, conduct research, travel, hike, paint, play music, read, learn and pray. She believed the prayers of well-wishers around the world sustained her. With the unending support of Ken, her brother and sisters, other family, her friends and special friend, Brother Michael Gallagher, she lived each day fully until the very last. Shortly before her death, she was selected as the unanimous honoree for the 2015 Humanitarian Award bestowed by the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America for her work with children in Ecuador and New Mexico. Elizabeth and Ken served on the board of St. Anthony's Alliance which supports lifesaving interventions for the health of people living in extreme poverty. Elizabeth introduced residents to medical mission work, and taught them the difference between doing surgery TO patients in the underdeveloped world and her approach of helping within the realm of her abilities and resources FOR the children of Ecuador. One resident said in describing Elizabeth's work, "surgical interventions were performed in those patients who would benefit with minimal risk for their recovery knowing that our team would return home. We were providing care to the poorest in the region who otherwise could not receive this care. And, finally, we treated all patients and their families with dignity." A memorial service celebrating the life of Dr. Elizabeth Szalay will be at 2:00 p.m. February 7th at St Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano Road NW, Albuquerque. VANDERGUST, SHIRLEY May 30, 1931 January 13, 2015 Shirley Ann Vandergust (Chuck) 83, in peace and with family around her, left this world for the next on January 13, after a short illness. Shirley Ann Bethman was born to Hazel Nadis Bethman and Frederick Jacob Bethman in Oak Park, Illinois. She graduated from Proviso High School in 1949 and married her high school sweetheart Al Vandergust in 1951. When Al was called to serve in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Shirley followed him to his base in San Diego, and lived there while he served two tours of duty. The first and second of their family of six children were born there. After Al finished his service, they returned to the Chicago area and lived there until 1968, when they moved their family to Los Alamos, New Mexico. Shirley began working at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a "casual" employee in 1970 and was hired on permanently shortly thereafter. She fulfilled a lifelong dream of higher education by returning to school and earning an Associate's degree, eventually becoming a paralegal aide in the Laboratory Council office of LANL, where she worked until she retired in 1997. Early in her career she acquired the nickname "Chuck" by which she was known for most of her career at LANL and by her family. All of her life she was a passionate supporter of higher education and a lifelong learner. In retirement, she traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. She frequently traveled with family and also by herself, with her beloved Pomeranian Cherokee for company. She was an enthusiastic participant in an expedition to the Holy Land with Calvary Christian Church, and with independent private tour companies to Machu Picchu, Peru, Paris and Alsace-Lorraine. She eventually settled in Albuquerque in Ventana Ranch and continued to travel to visit relatives to visit and cook the meals that all of us remembered and enjoyed. Her greatest joy later in life was the births of her twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. That love of little ones also kept her active as a benefactor of Joy Junction in Albuquerque. A small miracle occurred in 2013 when she was reacquainted with her niece, Sondra Fay, of Seattle, Washington, whom she had not seen since Sondra's babyhood. She was preceded in death by her parents; by her daughter, Vicki, in 1970, her beloved husband Al in 1980, her granddaughter, Erin Wood in 1998 and her brother Lloyd Bethmann in 2001. She is survived by her daughters Valerie Wood (spouse Butch) and Ellen Ballard (Evan) of Los Alamos; Leslie Monagle (Matthew) of Albuquerque; by sons A. R. Vandergust (Janet Smith) of Terrebonne, Oregon and Eric Vandergust (Aimee Garcia) of Houston, Texas, and her niece, Sondra Fay, of Seattle, Washington; by grandsons Steven Vandergust, Jason Vandergust (Kari Niebauer), Douglas Wood, Levi Monagle and Noah Monagle; by granddaughters Christine Ballard, Diane Wood Gordon (Matt Gordon), Alaina Vandergust, Nicole Vandergust, Alyssa Vandergust and Emily Vandergust; by great-grandsons Gentry Gordon, Kai Gordon and Gavin Vandergust; by numerous friends from high school, Chicago and LANL; and by the many children she encountered throughout the years to whom she became "Grandma Chuck." Shirley's family has entrusted her final care to French Mortuary in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joy Junction, P.O. Box 27693, Albuquerque, NM 87125 We will miss her quick and quirky sense of humor, her unceasing generosity and the bravery and grace with which she faced the limitations of age. Bon Voyage, Chuck, from all of us on your final journey.
