VALDEZ -- Rosemary Valdez, a woman of beauty, joy, and love was called home by our Heavenly Father, on Sunday, November 14, 2004. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe L. Valdez. She is survived by her children, Rebecca Marlowe, Jeanette Valdez, Joseph David Valdez and his late wife, Jean, Rosemary Maes and her husband, John, Kelly Valdez-Ayres and her husband, Bob; 11 grandchildren, Gregg Marlowe, Nicole Quinlan and her husband, Robert, Miguel Gonzales and his wife, Jamie, Dan Gonzales and his wife, Rebecca, Mark Gonzales, Joe Gonzales and his wife, Stephanie, Charli Gonzales Valdez and his wife, Susana, Joseph Valdez and his wife, Milany, Jonathon Valdez, Dinah Valdez, John Maes III; and 14 great-grandchildren, and one pending. She lived her life as an example of God's love, and has left a legacy of compassion, strength and a love of life. Rosary will be recited Friday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. NE. VIGIL -- Enrique Vigil, 90, a resident of Albuquerque for five years, died on November 16, 2004. He is survived by his five daughters, Josie Abeyta and husband, Alex of Penasco, NM, Helen Atencio and husband, John of Dixon, NM, Theresa Martinez and husband, Freddie of Albuquerque, Barbara Maestas and husband, David of Albuquerque and Annie Maestas and husband, James also of Albuquerque; two sons, William Vigil and wife, Dolores of Albuquerque and Jimmy Vigil and wife, Maxine of San Mateo, CA; 26 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Ofelia Aguilar of El Valle, NM and Lugardita Griego of Dixon, NM; one brother, Elizardo Vigil of Toole, UT. Enrique is preceded in death by his wife, Frances Maes Vigil; three sons, Tony, Henry, and Nelson Vigil; parents, Eduardo and Onofre Vigil; three brothers, Ernesto, Clarence and Ben Vigil. He was a former long time member of St. John the Baptist Pueblo Catholic Church. He was employed by the Zia Company at Los Alamos National Labs for 27 years. Enrique was a member of the Laborers International Union of North America Local 16. He loved farming and ranching. Enrique was a very loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Rosary will be recited on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary -Westside Chapel with Legion of Mary, reciting. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph on the Rio Grande Catholic Church, 5901 St. Josephs Dr. NW with Father Frank Prieto, celebrant. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. WELSBY -- Pearl Foster Welsby, age 93 and a long time resident of Albuquerque, died on Monday November 15, 2004 in a local hospital following an illness. She is survived by her niece, Loreen Schulz; great-niece, Sarah Wakeman; and great-nephew, David Schulz; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Welsby was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent and a sister, Rose Mae. Pearl was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pilot Club, Yucca Patrol of the Daughters of the Nile, Four Hills Country Club, and the D.A.R.. She was the owner of the old Sun Drug Store that was located on the corner of 4th and Central and later on Park Ave. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf. A viewing and visitation for Mrs. Welsby will be held on Thursday November 18, 2004 form 1:00 to 5:00 at Strong-Thorne Mortuary. Funeral services will be Friday November 19, 2004 at 11:00 am in the Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne with Rev. David Okerberg of First United Methodist Church officiating. BLUMENTHAL -- Ernst Herman Blumenthal, Jr. (Ernie, the tool man), 84, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend died suddenly at home November 13, 2004. In Ernie's long and colorful life he was an archeologist, German interpreter, ambulance driver, contractor, Mason, Shriner, noted antique tool expert and collector, gardener, storyteller, amateur photographer, and mushroom hunter extraordinaire who, in his prime, could spot an edible mushroom from 20 yards while driving 50 miles an hour through the Jemez mountains. A humble man with a keen wit and lively sense of humor characterized by colorful phrases and descriptions, Ernie was an example to all who knew him of generosity, courage, dignity, determination, strength and, above all, honesty. Ernie was born October 7, 1920 in Albuquerque to Ernst and Anna Marie Blumenthal. His life long interest in archeology began in 1934 when he joined the Albuquerque High School Archeological Society. He graduated with a degree in anthropology from the University of New Mexico in 1941. Ernie participated in and directed many important archeological excavations and field schools in New Mexico including Chaco Canyon, Jemez Cave, Kuaua, Gallina, Nanishagi, Unshagi and others. He was particularly proud of his work at Sandia Cave. Ernie proudly served his country in World War II. As a staff sergeant with the 133rd Evac Hospital he served as a German interpreter and ambulance driver. He was nominated for the Bronze Star for his heroic rescue of Dutch civilians trapped in a mine field and finally received the medal in 2001 as a result of the persistent efforts of his son, Ernst (Chipper) and Congresswoman Heather Wilson. Ernie also participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was recommended for the grade of 1st lieutenant in military intelligence. In his professional life, Ernie was a prominent building contractor who built the first all-electric home in Albuquerque. He also worked as a building inspector for the University of New Mexico Architect's Office and the Albuquerque Public Schools. After his retirement he worked as a roofing consultant, Ernie was a nationally recognized authority on antique tools and a member of the Midwest Tool Collector's Association once serving as its national vice president. He shared his love and knowledge of antique tools from his table at the Fair Grounds Flea Market where he was one of the most beloved and recognized vendors for more than 30 years. Ernie was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years,Mary Jean Worthen Blumenthal; his brother, Carlyle Blumenthal; and his sister, Dolores Colby. He is survived by his children Ernst H. (Chipper) Blumenthal III and wife, Cynthia of Placitas; daughter, Susan Jane Blumenthal of Placitas; grandson, Aaron David Dixon of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Aedriel Verda Mulliniks and husband, Mike of Mesa, Arizona; grandson, Soren Ernst Gaiser of Placitas; great-grandchildren, Eric Michael and Eliana Grace Mulliniks of Mesa, Arizona; and his beloved kitties, Peaches and Tiger. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. CARABAJAL -- Francisco "Franco" Carabajal was born November 16, 1944, and he passed away Saturday, November 13, 2004. He is survived by two sisters, Tina Baca of Los Angeles, CA, and Eloisa Nuanes; three brothers, David, Manuel, and Ernesto; longtime companion, Stella; other family members and friends who loved and will miss him. Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church, 550 Atrisco Dr. SW, with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 17, 2004.
