AMSDEN, LOIS H. Died as she lived, with quiet dignity and grace on February 5, 2015 at the age of 89. Lois was born on March 14, 1925 in the small Scandinavian community of New Effington, SD. After high school, she "escaped" South Dakota and journeyed to Washington D.C. to support the WWII effort. The war offered her a chance to learn skills in the earliest computers which led to a long career at Sandia National Labs. She retired in 1988. A product of the "Greatest Generation", Lois had an incredible work ethic which was highlighted in the Sandia Lab News as having never taken a sick day in 32 years of service. Lois loved the outdoors, fishing, gardening, politics, Lobo basketball, and her many canine companions, but was especially proud of her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who were the light of her life. Lois will be missed and remembered for being a wonderful mother and grandmother, her kindness, courage, inner strength and love of family. She had an engaging wit that she retained even through her long struggle with dementia. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William G. Payne, and Edgar A. Amsden; her parents, Orlie and Velma Holland; sister, Doris Knight; and brother, Orlie Holland, Jr. She is survived by her son, Rear Admiral USN (Ret.) William H. Payne (Deborah); daughter, Nancy Gherardi (Robert); grandchildren, Stacy Gherardi-Dolecek (Jeff) of Chicago, Erik Payne (Melissa), Joseph Gherardi (Tiffany), and Leslie Payne, all of Albuquerque. She had three great-grandchildren, Ava and Abigail Payne and Archer Dolecek. She is also survived by her sisters, Mae Lovelace and Joan Jacoby of Albuquerque, and Janis Banchero (Don) of California; and many nieces and nephews. Lois was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church. At her request, a private graveside memorial service is planned by the family, but you can join Lois in spirit by taking a long leisurely gaze at one of our beautiful sunsets and listening to the lyrics of her favorite song "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong. A special thanks to Dr. Tamara Goodman, and the many loving caregivers, nurses, and staff at Northridge Care Center for helping her on her journey home. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Animal Humane of New Mexico, 615 Virginia St. SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108, or to a charity of your choice. BERRY, MARJORIE ANN Passed away on Monday, January 26, 2015, after courageously battling metastatic uveal melanoma. Marjorie is survived by her husband of 46 years, Dennis; her younger son, Kevin, of Prescott, AZ; and her older son, Steven, and his wife, Sarah, and their sons, Matthew and James, all of Sandia Park, NM. She is also survived by her brother, Robert Demy, and sister-in-law, Ferial, of Falls Church, VA and their children, Richard Demy and Victoria Lester. Marjorie was born Marjorie Ann Demy on October 29, 1946, in Harrisburg, PA. In 1967, she became a registered nurse and practiced nursing in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington, DC, and Virginia, before she and Dennis moved to California, where Steven was born. From that point on, she dedicated herself to her raising her sons, Steven and later Kevin, by providing a loving and nurturing home environment and by tirelessly supporting the seemingly endless array of activities that engaged the "boys". In 1977, Marjorie and Dennis moved to New Mexico, where Kevin was born and where they have lived for nearly 38 years. Although Marjorie spent most of her time helping others, she managed to squeeze in time to pursue some of her own interests, including lots of reading, sewing and knitting crafts, gourmet cooking, aerobics, and making elaborate scrapbooks of her travels. She even served as an income tax return preparer for a few years. However, Marjorie's true passion was traveling, so it is not surprising that she set foot on all seven continents and visited 90 of the current 193 UN member countries. Her love for animals, in particular, took her to Africa, Costa Rica, the Amazon, and Borneo, and along the way, Marjorie met, became close friends, and repeated trips with numerous traveling companions. Throughout her life, Marjorie was kind, caring, and giving, and she could be counted on to make every day special, particularly celebrations. She will be sorely missed by everyone who has ever known her. According to her wishes, Marjorie will be cremated, and her ashes will be dispersed by her family in several places she especially loved. A celebration of Marjorie's life will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Daniels Family Funeral Services Wyoming Chapel. In lieu of flowers, Marjorie requested that memorial donations may be made in her name to the World Wildlife Fund, worldwildlife.org. DOMENICI, MARIANELLA, S.C. Sister of Charity of Cincinnati, Marianella Domenici S.C, passed away on February 5, 2015 at the age of 84 in her Albuquerque, NM home. Sister Marianella was born Nella Jeannette Domenici on May 24, 1930 to Cherubino and Alda (Vichi) Domenici in Albuquerque, NM. She was a Sister of Charity for 67 years. Sister grew up in Albuquerque with her siblings, Thelma, Mary, Karlene, Pete and Rose Ann. Immersed in Catholic education from the beginning, she attended St. Vincent Academy, a school of the Sisters of Charity. All who knew her during these years recall her passion for becoming a teacher. As Sister said in her autobiography, "I cannot recall a time that I didn't want to be like 'my Sister,' who taught me and took such good care of me and the other little kindergarteners." Sister also recalled being asked, as a high school student, to take care of some children, and she reflected that, "it was that type of experience that was the starting point of my conviction that the education of children was my calling." And what a calling it was leading to 63 years of teaching in Catholic education! Upon graduation from St. Vincent Academy in 1947, Sister Marianella entered the Sister of Charity Community. By 1949, she was teaching first-grade students at Sacred Heart in Denver, CO. During her career, Sister taught every elementary and middle school grade, but she later recalled that these 62 first-graders were her first real test to see if she could love and help each student. As thousands of her "love doves" from over the years can attest, she passed that test with flying colors. Sister's next assignment took her to Cincinnati in 1954 to St. Mary, Hyde Park. While at St. Mary, she grew her roots more deeply in her love of children and also completed her Bachelor of Science at the College of Mount Saint Joseph in 1958. From 1959 to 1962, she remained in Cincinnati, teaching at St. Lawrence. Reassigned to the West in 1962, Sister went to St. Rose in Denver, CO, which was her first foray into teaching junior-high students. Undaunted by the new challenge, she not only found the time to share her love with those students, but to pursue a master's degree in administration, which she received from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. In 1968, the Sisters of Charity assigned her to her first role as principal at Pauline Memorial in Colorado Springs, CO. Over the next 21 years, she brought her unique joy for education, love for all around her, and servant leadership to this community. What a testament to her incredible impact on the community that, more than 25 years after she left, that community retains a deep friendship of and fondness for her to this very day. To her final days, the people of Pauline Memorial including the full generation of students she taught kept in touch with her, shared their successes with her, and considered her their very own Sister Marianella. One can see a very tangible reflection of that love for her in the Sister Marianella Library at Pauline Memorial, dedicated in her honor. In 1989, Sister returned to her very own home parish and she returned to Albuquerque as the Principal of St. Mary School. Over the next 23 years, she exemplified the spirit of the "St. Mary's Family," knitting the community together and bringing the school to new heights by the sheer power of the Holy Spirit within her. How fitting that it was here she coined the term "love doves" for her youthful charges, all of whom sought her out for the grace that she so abundantly shared with those around her. While she won accolade after accolade, including Teacher of the Year in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, nothing meant more to her than sharing the joy of her calling. Since retiring from St Mary's in 2012, Sister enjoyed her family and friends in Albuquerque and beyond, while keeping a hand in the education that she loved. Several days a week, one could find her mentoring, tutoring, and teaching at St. Therese, or even in her apartment. She was active in visiting with friends and attending Mass at Immaculate Conception. Beloved by so many, she passed away in peace with loved ones around her during her final illness and days. Sister is survived by Thelma Domenici, The Honorable Pete and Nancy Domenici and Martin and Rose Ann (Domenici) Hamberger. Sister is also survived by 10 nephews and nieces, as well as 18 grand-nieces and nephews and one great-grandnephew. Sister is predeceased by Cherubino and Alda (Vichi) Domenici, and by her sisters, Mary (Domenici) Stratman, and Karlene Guillon. A Viewing will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW. The Viewing will be followed by recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper Avenue NW, in Albuquerque. Mass will be followed by interment at Mt. Cavalry Cemetery, 1900 Edith Boulevard NE in Albuquerque. It is suggested that contributions may be made to: St. Mary's Catholic School Scholarship Fund in Memory of Sr. Marianella Domenici C/O St. Mary's Catholic School, 224 7th Street NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102, 247-4271. HARRIS, BETTY Heaven just got a little more beautiful with the arrival of Betty Harris on Wednesday, February 4, 2015, after living a wonderful life for 97 years. Betty was a well-loved New Mexico artist, art teacher, community volunteer and dear friend to the luckiest among us. Art has been a part of Betty's life since childhood. After high school she studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and soon became a top fashion artist, drawing images of live models that were then used as advertisements in newspaper ads. It was no surprise that she would follow in the footsteps of her father, Frank Goodman, who was an artist and art editor of the Kansas City Star newspaper. Her marriage to Jim Harris in 1944 led to world travels in the Air Force. They retired here in 1968 and soon Betty's oil paintings of New Mexico landscapes and sculptures of Native American Indians became well-known, winning many awards around the country. Her work was featured at the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Festival and the Weems Artfest. There was not an art medium she didn't master. Along with her mother, Helen Goodman, she created one-of-a-kind, hand painted and decorated eggs that are now collectors' items. At the urging of her friend Jackie Fallis, Betty launched a new career of teaching oil painting, first in Jackie's Arts & Crafts Mart and then in her own home. Her classes continued until just recently, retaining some of her original students after more than 30 years. As full as Betty's life was, she found a new passion in 1983: serving the Albuquerque community through the Assistance League of Albuquerque. One of her greatest joys has been using her God-given talents alongside her friends as they make Albuquerque a better place to live. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Assistance League of Albuquerque, P.O. Box 359010, Albuquerque, NM 87176. Betty is survived by sons, Jamie Harris of Los Lunas, Vaughn Harris and Kym Couture of Salt Lake City, and Bill and Deborah Harris of Albuquerque; grandchildren, David Harris in Utah and Emily Harris in Florida; and cousins, June and Joan Short of Independence, MO, and Bill and Gerry Short of Arlington, TX. She loved her fellow members at Central United Methodist Church where she worshiped for many years. A closed casket service will be held at her church on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, 10:30 a.m., 201 University Blvd. NE. Private Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Betty's contagious love of life and beauty will certainly be missed. Jesus said, "My Father's house has many rooms." Betty is now redecorating one of them. Please visit our online guestbook for Betty at www.FrenchFunerals.com. FRENCH Wyoming 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400

SNOVER, SUSAN (SUSIE) Susan (Susie) Snover, born August 26, 1944 in Charlevoix, Michigan, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2015. Raised on a dairy farm, Susie developed a lifelong love of animals and a fierce independence. Her parents, Rose and Lynn Carpenter, raised strong, self-reliant children, including the youngest, Susie. Fearless, she never shied away from a challenge, whether it was drag racing for money or marrying a young Coast Guard sailor when she was only 17. This match required legal permission from her parents. Given the option of signing the papers or tossing the young man in Lake Michigan, Lynn decided to give Gary Snover a chance. A year later, they welcomed their first child, George, followed by Glenda, and finally Greg. (Susie swore the three 'G' names were coincidence.) Born with what she described as "a lemon of a body," Susie struggled with health issues throughout her life, but possessed the gift of finding something to celebrate every day. With a ready and heartfelt kindness, she put people at ease and made friends wherever she went. An expert at sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting, Susie created masterful treasures and enduring bonds with those she loved. She is survived by her loving husband; her children, George, Glenda and her husband Karl, and Greg and his wife Stephanie; beloved grandchildren, Ross, Perryn, Paloma, and Emma; as well as her brothers, Del and Steve, and sisters, Roselynn, Fran and Sandy. A memorial will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Canyon Club. The family welcomes donations to Animal Humane NM in lieu of flowers.
