MAUPIN, BETTY CAPPS 1929-2014 Betty Capps Maupin, age 84, a resident of Belen, passed away on Saturday, September 27. She was one of two children born on December 19, 1929 to J. The family remained in Belen only a year before being lured to California by stories of jobs and prosperity. The family returned to Belen in 1943 after giving up on the false promises of fortune, a drastic change for 13-year-old Betty. She graduated from Belen High School in 1948, married Leslie Maupin in 1949, and went to work at the First National Bank of Belen where she worked off and on until 1985, taking time off to be with her daughters when they were young. She enjoyed ceramics, china painting, knitting, and crocheting. She was a member of the Belen Pilot Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. L. Capps and Effie Capps; brothers, Sherman Capps, J.L. Capps Jr., Austin Capps, and Billy Gene Capps; and her sister, Edith Mae Capps.
