MAUPIN, BETTY CAPPS 1929-2014 Betty Capps Maupin, age 84, a resident of Belen, passed away on Saturday, September 27. She was one of two children born on December 19, 1929 to J. Logan and Effie Capps in Littlefield, Texas. Betty's twin, Billy, died only ten months later. Her first years were spent on a farm, but the depression and dust storms forced the family to look for better conditions and they moved to Belen, New Mexico, in 1937, where the irrigated fields looked pretty good to a poor farmer from the dust bowl. The family remained in Belen only a year before being lured to California by stories of jobs and prosperity. The family returned to Belen in 1943 after giving up on the false promises of fortune, a drastic change for 13-year-old Betty. She graduated from Belen High School in 1948, married Leslie Maupin in 1949, and went to work at the First National Bank of Belen where she worked off and on until 1985, taking time off to be with her daughters when they were young. She enjoyed ceramics, china painting, knitting, and crocheting. She was a member of the Belen Pilot Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. L. Capps and Effie Capps; brothers, Sherman Capps, J.L. Capps Jr., Austin Capps, and Billy Gene Capps; and her sister, Edith Mae Capps. Betty is survived by her husband, Leslie; two daughters; two sisters; four grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel on Friday, October 3, beginning at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. Arrangements are being handled by the caring professionals at the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel, 418 W. Reinken Ave., (505)864-4448, where an online guest register is available at www.noblinfuneralservice.com
