HIGGINS, CAROL E. (EVANS) Passed away on Sunday, 25 May, after many years of courageous and erstwhile successful struggle against cancer. Born in December 1931 she was her mother's "Christmas Carol." It was during the Great Depression and one of our beloved mother's hardscrabble childhood joys was breeding and training tri-color collies. Her lifelong love of animals, which she shared with her younger surviving sister, Neil Evans, she conveyed to her four children, three of whom survive her: Leah Kim Higgins and husband Nathaniel Paul Tully; Bruce Higgins and wife Bonnie York Higgins of Flagstaff AZ; Mark Buckner Higgins with Tish Morris; two granddaughters Leila Higgins with Joe Fleishman, and Meira McKay and husband Eric and their two children Connor and Caitlyn and everyone's myriad dogs! Carol's youngest child, Paula Higgins, then married to Jerry Kiuttu, pre-deceased her in July 2006, as did her husband Philip Buckner Higgins who died in 1993. As a beautiful and bright 17-year-old attending college chemistry class, Carol met Philip Higgins, with whom she eloped to begin family life in Pescadero, CA where Philip was hired to maintain costal radio towers. The young family eventually returned to Utah where Carol began raising their first two children while Phil resumed colligate engineering studies on the greatly appreciated GI Bill. On Christmas Eve, 1954, Carol, with her family of five now, crossed the Rio Grande to live in Albuquerque. Phil had begun crucial Cold War work out at the burgeoning Sandia Labs. For years while the family rose into the Middle Class and relocated to the Village of Corrales, Carol labored hard as a stay-at-home mother now raising four children. Eventually she resumed her studies at UNM, earning a BA in English, an MS in Sociology, and an MA in Counseling. Carol was an accomplished cruciverbalist, birder, hiker and gardener; either active in or giving generously at various times, to the: NM Mountain Club, Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, Planned Parenthood, Roadrunner Food Bank, and Animal Humane Society, among others. She read and travelled widely and had an artistic bent, evidenced in her drawings, paintings, ceramics and needlepoint works. She played accordion and piano, and loved Classical music. Tough when she needed to be, yet Carol loved people deeply and uniquely. We, her saddened survivors, will greatly miss our mother's broad humor; her intelligence and worldly curiosity; her spiritual seeking; her tender sympathies for all creatures both domestic and wild. We will even miss her often myopic determination to secure herself materially and emotionally from some hard lessons of an often bleak childhood. We love you Mom; we love you Grandma. We remember. We will always remember . . . Those of you who may recall Carol and are so inclined, please donate, in lieu of flowers or other such, in Carol's honor, to any of the aforementioned organizations.

After graduating college with a degree in Geology, and with the world at war in the mid 1940s, Ralph joined the Navy and completed flight training in Corpus Christi, Texas where he was awarded his pilot wings. Around this time, he wed the love of his life, Bobbie Ruth Hilliard, and together they commenced a marriage and life journey as a military family. The couple borne three sons and traveled to various military bases over the course of his Navy career including Washington DC, Virginia, Morocco Africa, Nebraska and Honolulu, Hawaii. His service duties included those of a Naval Aviator, a Strategic Air Command European Intelligence Representative and a joint staff officer for the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He attained the rank of Lt. Commander during his 26 year military service. Ralph remained in Hawaii after his retirement from the Navy, during which time he taught mathematics at a local intermediate high school. Soon thereafter in 1969 he returned to Raton, New Mexico with his family in tow and began working for the family business, Pendleton Oil and Gas Company. He worked throughout business locations in northern New Mexico as a managing officer of the company well into his 80s. Ralph is survived by elder sister Jean Pendleton Filkins; by his sons Ralph Jr., Matthew and Ned; five grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; as well as numerous other family relations. Thanks go out for the kind care Ralph received during his stay at Colfax Senior Care Assisted Living and also for the services provided by Sangre De Cristo Hospice. During his lifetime, Ralph was a benefactor to a number of charitable organizations and a supporter of health industry causes including March of Dimes, Alzheimer's Association and the American Cancer Foundation. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the surviving family requests that donations be made to these and other organizations of choice. A memorial service is planned for June 6, 2014 at the Yaksich - Long Funeral Home in Raton located at 1310 South Second Street at 11:00 am that morning. ROMERO, SANTOS TEOFILO Age 91, was called home by The Father on Monday, November 11, 2013. Santos was born in Roy, NM on February 17, 1922. He was the third of eleven children to Teofilo and Filomena Romero of Roy. Santos grew up in Roy and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School. He grew up Catholic and served as an altar boy at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roy. As a youngster, he was very active in sports and excelled as a runner. Coach Bealla worked out Santos and younger brother Tomas every morning and evening. The public school in Roy recruited Santos to represent them in area track meets. Santos learned the value of hard work and dedication at an early age. As a member of "the greatest generation", Santos followed his older brother Eduardo and enlisted in the US Army at the age of 19. He served as an Army medic from 1941-1944. He was in combat in the Philippines and New Guinea during WWII. Letters home were rare and short because his unit was constantly on the move. He left his Earthly life to join God in Heaven on Veteran's Day. Upon returning from WWII, he married Fedelina (Faye) Esquibel and became an instant father to three young children (Mary Louise, Floyd and John Aguilar) that he readily accepted and raised as his own. Patrick, Robert, Georgia, Filomena (Rose) and Carlos Romero followed. Through the years, Santos and Fay created a family that loved and respected their parents and others, taught the value of hard work, loyalty and above all - help those in need. Those that knew Santos well considered him "an old fashioned gentlemen". He was a devoted family man that loved his wife and children dearly and was always there to lend support. Although he did not have a formal education beyond eighth grade, there was nothing he could not do. He was known as a "jack of all trades". He was smart, a tireless worker, a great communicator, an outstanding athlete, musician, carpenter, mechanic, cowboy and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also the humblest of men and expected no less from his children. Most importantly, he was a great husband and a great father to eight children. Santos was well respected by his peers and communities as he worked highway construction throughout New Mexico, City Marshal in Roy and Police Chief in Springer. Following his retirement from the Springer Police Department, he and Faye became caretakers of the Bell Ranch Mansion. Grandsons Robert (BJ) and Roman Romero were fortunate to spend their formative summers with Santos and Faye at the Bell Ranch. As they will attest, "it doesn't get any better than that"! Upon returning to Springer, Santos devoured every Louis L'Amour novel he could get his hands on and cherished supporting the sports teams at Springer and Roy. He very much looked forward to visits from all his grandchildren. Santos was preceded in death by his beloved Faye; daughter Mary Louise Maestas, son Carlos Romero; mother and father Filomena and Teofilo Romero; sister Veneranda Narvaez; brothers Tomas (Beede) and Joseph Romero. Left behind to cherish his memories are sons Floyd Aguilar of Springer, John Aguilar of Roy, Patrick (Linda) Romero of Corpus Christi, TX, and Robert Santos Romero of Springer; daughters Georgia (Henry) Arellano of Bernalillo and Filomena "Rose" (Michael) Ramirez of Springer; sisters Jeanne LeDoux of California, Dorothy (Pedro A.) Gonzales of Mills, Santa Ana Cecilia Hardesty of Roy and Della (Al) Sharief of California; brothers John Edward Romero of Rio Rancho and Lawrence Romero of Albuquerque. Grandchildren include: Patricia Guenther, Shuree Sandlin, Floyd Aguilar Jr., Michael Aguilar, Roberta Aguilar, Robert (BJ) Romero, Roman S. Romero, Patrick Jr. and Adam Santos Romero, Paula Fernandez and Alejandro (Jano) Arellano, and Charlie Mirabal. Great- grandchildren include: Jordan Guenther, Estevan Espinoza, Santana Faye Romero, Estevan Castro, Enrique Castro, Elijah Castro, Alejandro Arellano Jr., Carlos Fernandez, Estrella Fernandez, Araceli Mirabal, Addison Arellano, Ashlynn Arellano, Amelia Arellano, Evan Romero, Emily Romero and Triniti Ann Romero. The Santos T. Romero family offers their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Misbah Zmily & staff at La Familia Primary Care in Raton, Dr. Sally Fabec and staff at the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Raton, Dr. Vidal, oncologist and staff at Albuquerque Veterans Administration in Albuquerque and the staff at Miner's Colfax Medical Center in Raton for their kindness & caring of Santos. Romero will be held for family and friends on Saturday, June 07, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Springer starting with Rosary at 10:00 a.m. by Deacon Ed Olona, followed by burial Mass with Father Emmanuel Izuka officiating, songs by Vicki Villareal and Mike Glassman, cemetery burial at Springer Cemetery and dinner at the St. Joseph's Parish Hall. SPENCER, ELSIE CHARLESE Age 90, of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed from this life on May 26, 2014 and was received into the care of her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Charlese Spencer received the UNM College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award in 2007. At the age of 13 she knew that she wanted to be a missionary in Africa. She acquired her missionary training at a college in Texas and then turned her attention to a lifelong career in nursing. She completed her RN at the Regina School of Nursing (University of Albuquerque) in 1952. Before she went to Africa in 1954, she trained as a midwife in London. Charlese obtained her bachelor of science in nursing at UNM. She taught nursing rotations to Native American students for the BIA and later went on to a MSN program at the University of Mississippi, graduating in 1973. Charlese and a co-worker went to Ghana to staff a previously closed missionary medical clinic serving the medical needs of several bush tribes. The nearest doctor was 40 miles away, and the clinic was 100 miles from the nearest food store. The outpatient general medical clinics were scheduled Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the leprosy clinic on Tuesday and the pregnant women's clinics on Thursday with many birth deliveries occurring at night. Since they were well accepted by the local populations, Charlese and her co-worker treated 50-100 outpatients per day. The data she collected was evidence that the prenatal care and medical treatments were saving lives. Charlese and her nurse co-workers provided nursing services in Africa during the '50s, '60s and '70s. Retired from her missionary work, she was again a nurse educator at the University of Albuquerque, the Luna Vocational/Technical School, and Highlands University. A medical condition forced her retirement from teaching in 1983. Since that time, she has written and published her memoirs. Her motivation for doing all of this was so that others would come to the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Charlese was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Edna Spencer; sister, Luella Mae Lynch and husband, Dave; and her brother, Royce Ray Spencer. She is survived by her brother, Calvin Lee Spencer and wife, Yvonne; her loving niece, Roxanne Piatt and husband, Dan; dear friends, William Lock, Betty Olson, and Kathy King, who stayed by her side until her death; and many other loving family members and friends both here and in Ghana. Services are pending and will be announced. Please visit the online guest book for Elsie at www.FrenchFunerals.com. FRENCH University 1111 University Blvd. NE 505-843-6333

Bill's father, Roy who wrote "For Me, The Sun", was quite an outdoors person and exposed Bill and his two brothers, Allen now deceased and Bob to beautiful areas in New Mexico and Colorado on many camping trips. Little wonder that Bill started the New Mexico Mountain Club in 1952 and it is still going strong after 62 years. Bill wrote this "The high point in my life was when I married Ruth, a girl from Chicago, September 4, 1965 who I met at the April meeting and it was truly "Love at first sight" for the both of us. And we did get to travel a lot; Tibet, Russia, China, New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland, Europe, Thailand, etc, etc. But the best trips of all were in our 1972 VW Camper in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Bill was preceded in death by his sons, Billy and Phillip. He is survived by his son Paul, grandson Dario, brother Robert and his wife Mary and many nephews and nieces and friends. A donation in his memory, to your favorite animal charity would make him smile. Bill will be missed! WALKER, IRENE MATTINGLY MAY 8, 1925 - MAY 23, 2014 Irene Mattingly Walker passed away peacefully after a long, full life and a short illness. Irene was born and raised in the town of Ironton in southeastern Missouri, the daughter of George Everestus Mattingly, a civil engineer, and Irene Marshall Mattingly, a homemaker who raised eight children while her husband traveled the state of Missouri working for the Missouri Highway Department and the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Irene was fortunate to grow up with three half-siblings: Tom, Florence, and Mary; and four full siblings: Elizabeth, George, Bill, and Jane. After graduating from the Ursuline Academy in Acadia, Missouri, she attended Saint Louis University, earning a B.S. in Radiological Technology while working full-time in the x-ray department at Firmin Desloge Hospital. Her brother George traveled to the southwestern United States and during a telephone call while passing through Albuquerque, he told her that he thought she might like it. At Firmin Desloge, she was acquainted with a physician whose uncle ran a clinic in Albuquerque. He arranged for her to receive an employment offer and a short while later she moved to Albuquerque and worked for several years at the Lovelace Clinic. She met George Walker, a law student who was also from southeastern Missouri, on a blind date and later that year, after attending picnics and law school functions together, they were married. Her radiological experience eventually led to a job at Sandia National Laboratories where she worked until shortly before the birth of her first child. She and George had five children, born within seven years. Irene was talented at sketching and watercolor, loved to read a good book when she had the time, and had an uncanny knack for entertaining toddlers, whether her children or her grandchildren. She was a prolific letter writer. Irene is survived by her children: William George Walker, Martha Susan Walker Gonzales, Alice Irene Walker, Judith Marie Walker Bruesch, and Thomas Dwight Walker; by her eight grandchildren: Ian Walker Cady, Benjamin David Cady, Susan Rose Cady, Zachary Walker Hoffman, Nigel Walker Hoffman, Jacob van Heijenoort Walker, Noah Thomas Walker, and Grace Elizabeth Walker; by her children-in-law: Joshua Hoffman, Laure van Heijenoort, Gordon Bruesch, and Marshall Gonzales; by her sister Jane Cataldo; and by numerous nieces and nephews. A special thank you to her long-time caregiver and friend, Diana Carrillo. Please visit our online guestbook for Irene at www.FrenchFunerals.com FRENCH - Lomas 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE (505) 275-3500
