GARCIA, LAWRENCE R. August 10, 1951 - December 23, 2011. I'll love you dear, I'll love you, Till China and Africa meet, And the river jumps over the mountain, And the salmon sings in the street. I'll love you till the ocean, Is folded and hung up to dry, And the seven stars go sqawking, Like geese about in the sky. W.H. Auden. Missing you, Marikay

PARNELL, EDWARD GENE "Papaw" to many of his beloved family, passed away peacefully in his bed next to his loving wife on Friday, December 20th at the age of 79. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Lee and Mable Joy Parnell, and his sister Evelyn Lee Coor. Gene met the love of his life, Yvonne Ross, while attending High School in Artesia, NM. They were married in Artesia on October 2nd, 1953 and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Gene is lovingly remembered by his children Ross Wayne Parnell, Genie Parnell-Sharp, Diana Statzula; grandchildren Myndi Jewell, Jason Herman, Melissa Fisher, Lee Parnell, Robbie Witt, Brandi Weller, Courtney Shuman, and Chris Statzula; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Ralph Parnell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was born in Artesia, NM on December 26th, 1933. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1954 and joined the Navy in 1955 where he served for 2 years aboard the USS Lexington. He was to be the last one off the ship should it be sunk. Gene learned to be a hard worker from his father, Ed Parnell, who lovingly "corrected" his son after plowing four rows of the wrong cotton field. Gene would take the lessons he learned from his father to Southwest Potash, where he worked for 7 years. Following a short yet memorable stay in Seattle, Gene and Yvonne eventually moved to Gillette, WY where he worked as a welder and for Carter Mining Company. He retired in April 1994 after 15 years. Gene enjoyed being with his church family where he strived to live like Christ. His greatest desire was for others to know that Jesus loves them no matter what they've done or where they've come from. This was especially evident through his involvement in Kairos where he loved telling the incarcerated (residents) about the love of Christ. As a hobby, this cool cowboy from Wyoming enjoyed archery, which eventually led to winning the National Indoor Archery Championship in 1973. Gene also loved to paint and excelled at simply being ornery. One of his greatest joys was in spending time with those he loved. The Parnell family reunion-celebration service will be held at Montgomery Church of Christ, 7201 Montgomery Blvd. NE on Saturday, December 28th at 9:00 a.m. with grandson Jason Herman officiating. A reception will take place following the service. Per his request, Gene's ashes will be scattered in the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Kairos New Mexico by mailing a check to Diane Garcia Kairos New Mexico, PO Box 6546, Las Cruses, NM 88006. Please indicate that it is in memory of Gene Parnell.
