LERMA DE'CHAVEZ -- BERNADETTE (BERN) Compeleted her life's journey on this earth December 17th, 2011. She was called by her Lord Jesus Christ, and she leaves behind her loving husband and best friend Martin (Marty) Chavez; her parents Alex and Nettie Lerma whom she adored; devoted sister Veronica (Ron) Lerma; beloved brothers Ruben (Rube) and wife Patsy, Phillip (Beeb) and his wife Barbara, and the youngest Theodore (Teddy). Bernadette was preceded in death by her dear brother Samuel (Sam) who most graciously led her to Jesus Christ whom she served all of her days. Bernadette had no children of her own but had a mother/daughter bond with her niece Jennifer (Jenny) Barajas. She so loved her nieces Hollie Anderson, Natalie, Melanie, and Sabrina Lerma and her nephews Adam, Chris and Isaac Lerma. Bernadette was loved by her family and was adored by all who knew her. Bernadette reached out to people who were broken and brought them to the grace of God countless times. LU -- ELENA J. Elena Lu passed away December 23, 2011 in Albuquerque, NM. Elena was born in Chungking, China on October 2, 1940. She grew up in Hualien, Taiwan and moved to the United States in 1967. She was the eldest daughter of Karl K. and Siyi K. Chen. She was married on December 21, 1968 to George S. Lu and was his beloved wife for 43 years. She was the cherished mother of Aldrinna and Anne; the treasured grandmother of Nathaniel, Greyson, Kinsey and expected grandson due in March; and kind mother-in-law to Greg Nichols and Zachary Benz. Elena will be forever remembered by her sisters and brothers, Susana, Rosa, Hoover and Thomas and many family members including cousins, nephews and nieces. Elena loved to spend time with her grandchildren and pets, traveling the world and contributing through her volunteer work. She enjoyed visiting and laughing with her many great friends everywhere. Elena's final resting place will be next to her parents at Alta Mesa Cemetery in Palo Alto, CA. She was especially close to her father and mother. LUJAN -- BERLINDA ROSE Our dear Berlinda passed away on 12/31/11 after a brief battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Leon Lujan and Lola Lujan; her brothers, Alfonso and Leon Lujan; her sisters, Lucille Baca, Carmen Lujan, and Christina Lujan-Bonds. She is survived by her sister Andrea O. Lujan, and brother Raymond D. Lujan and his wife Flora. She is survived also by several nieces and nephews: Martin (wife Valery) Baca, Angela (husband Gene) Sievel, Berlinda (husband Ken) Eras, Mark Lujan, Michael (wife Eloisa) Lujan, Karol (husband Tim) Salazar, Daniel Lujan, and Charles Bonds. Berlinda was an Albuquerque Public Schools teacher for 39 years and an avid walker at Coronado Center. Berlinda was a devout practicing Catholic that loved her faith. Berlinda's family deeply appreciates the love, support and prayers they received from our dear relatives, friends and neighbors. MANN -- HELENA THERESA Age 86, a resident of Bahama, NC passed away on Monday, December 12, 2011 following a long illness. Terry was a long time resident of Albuquerque where she worked for (and retired from) the Directorate of Nuclear Surety at Kirtland AFB. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar C. Mann of Albuquerque, NM, a member of the New Mexico 200th Coastal Artillery and survivor of the Bataan Death March; stepson, John F. Mann; eight brothers and sisters, as well as her mother, Sara Abel and father, George Walter. She is survived by three daughters, Linda Audy and husband, Robert of Bahama; Debbie Kelley of Urbandale, Iowa; Melissa Gaylor and husband, Bill of Atoka, OK; one son, Oscar Mann of Albuquerque, NM; daughter-in-law Lora Mann of Helotes, TX along with many other family members. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 1100 Coal Ave SE, Albuquerque, NM. MARMON -- RICHARD H. "POLLY" A resident of Los Chavez since 1984 was born in Albuquerque May 15, 1924, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2011. He was raised in Laguna, NM by his parents Henry C. and Lilly Ann. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Betty Jo; children, Polly Ann Canive and husband, Jose, Richard H. Marmon II and wife, Linda; James R. Marmon, and Marguerite Sweeney and husband, Edward; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lee Marmon of Laguna, NM and Kenneth Marmon of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary, the mother of his children in 1973; and his second wife, Shirley in 1998. After he graduated from high school in 1942 he attended tech schools in New Mexico, Texas and completed his training at Philco Airborne Radio School in Philadelphia, PA, under the U.S. Signal Corps Reserve in 1943. Dick was called into service in 1943. He served in the U.S. Air Force 390th Bomb Groups, Squadron 570th, at Station 153 Parham, England. Flying over Germany he was wounded on his 15th mission and returned to the United States in January 1945. Mr. Marmon was awarded the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster and The Purple Heart. After the war, Dick attended the University in Albuquerque and worked for Sandia National Labs, retiring after 32 years in 1980. After traveling to many parts of the world including seeing the Great Wall of China, with Shirley they settled down in Los Chavez and did voluntary work for the Talking Book Library for the Blind and Handicapped for 22 years by repairing the tape machines and head sets. He was a life member of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society in Pooler, GA, a life member of the 390th Foundation of the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, AZ, and a life member of the New Mexico Chapter of the 8th Air Force in Albuquerque. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held, Friday, January 6th at 10:30 am at French - University Chapel. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. MARQUEZ -- LEO Lieutenant General USAF, Retired At age 79, Leo Marquez died peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, December 30, 2011. He is survived by his wife, the former Stella Alvarez of Las Cruces NM, and their children Diana Marquez, David Marquez, Paula Hewitt and her daughter Alisa; Patricia and Allan Knighten and their daughter Adrienne; Phil and Susan Marquez and their children Marisa, Brittanae Brown and Michael Birner, siblings Ruben and Pedie Marquez, Jim and Helen Marquez, Mary Ann Greiner and sister- in-law Esther Marquez and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Santiago and Emma Marquez, his brother Ben Marquez and sister, Carmen Baca. He was born on January 27, 1932 in Peralta, NM and grew up in the farming village of Tome, NM. Leo graduated from New Mexico State University's Air Force ROTC program with a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology. He also earned a Master of Science degree in business administration from George Washington University. He was a distinguished graduate of the Air Command and Staff College and the National Defense College and received a Master of Business Administration degree from the Advanced Management Program for Executives, Carnegie-Mellon University. He was named a distinguished alumnus and received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from his alma mater, New Mexico State University. He proudly served his country for 33 years as a US Air Force officer before retiring as a Lieutenant General. His many decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star with V for valor for combat in the Republic of Vietnam, Meritorious Service medal and Air Force Commendation medal with one oak leaf cluster. His last assignment was as Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Engineering, Headquarters US Air Force, Pentagon. He was a pilot with over 2000 hours in single engine jet fighters. His many noteworthy achievements include the approval and implementation of the Air Force Combat Ammunitions Center known as "Ammo U" and the maintenance badge that all Air Force maintainers now wear so proudly just above the heart. The Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez Award of Maintenance Excellence was named and is earned by civilian and military Air Force maintenance personnel in recognition of superior service. Since retirement from the Air Force, he was an executive in several engineering and aerospace companies and served the state of New Mexico on the Kirtland Partnership Committee, New Mexico Military Base Planning Commission and as a regent of both New Mexico Tech University and the New Mexico Museum Board. MASTRONARDI -- JUANITA MARIE Loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to many went to her final reward to live with Our Father God and His precious son Jesus, Our Wonderful Savior on December 25, 2011. She will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know her. She was born on December 22, 1928 and her wonderful parents Andres and Remedios Chavez did a lovely job raising her and her siblings, teaching them to love and forgive others always. Our mother was a dedicated Christian and put Jesus first in everything she did. She was a fine example of His love in the earth during her 83 years. She is survived by her caring daughter Patricia Ann Taylor who took care of her for the last eight years since her stroke. She is also survived by one son, Angelo A. Mastronardi and his wife Teresa. Juanita has four beautiful grandchildren, Dana Richard Fenton , Darrin Lee Fenton, Cindy and Jessica Mastronardi and two lovely great-grandchildren, Allyssa Amor Quezada-Fenton and baby Dino Fenton. The great-grandchildren brought her much comfort and joy. Her only surviving sister, Dorothy Chavez, 92, lives in San Mateo, CA. and has been there for my mom and me via phone calls all during the past eight years. For this I say a Great Big Thank You from my mom. My mom's only surviving brother is Andres "Joe" Chavez who was of great help to her in the early years when she was raising my brother and I. For this I am very grateful to him. She was preceded in death by her sisters Mela and Josephine Barreras and her brothers Al Chavez and Pete Chavez all of whom she loved with all her heart. My uncles Al Chavez and Pete Chavez also helped my mother and were very good uncles to me and my brother. Juanita worked for the City of Albuquerque for nearly 30 years where she retired. Her hobbies were sewing, working in her yard, cooking, dancing and helping others. Services will be announced at a later date due to churches being closed for the New Year's holiday. MCBAIN -- GORDON, JR. age 98, born August 22, 1913 in Trinidad, CO, passed away at home on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Gordon was a resident of Albuquerque for 71 years. He was a veteran of World War II. Gordon was employed by the Santa Fe Rail Yard for 36 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Eleanor; and son, Lance. MCCAUSLAND -- CLAUDE MORRIS Was born on February 7, 1919 in Pryor Creek, Oklahoma to Claude and Mary McCausland. The McCausland family moved to Dexter, New Mexico in 1921 where Claude grew up and graduated from Dexter High School in 1937. After graduation he attended college at Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM and graduated in 1941 with a degree in Industrial Arts. In December of 1939, Claude married his loving wife of 72 years, Clelia "Kay" Balzano, who grew up in Maxwell, NM, and also attended Highlands University. After graduating together in August of 1941, Claude and Kay moved to Carlsbad, NM, where he taught Industrial Arts at Carlsbad High School. In 1942 having learned to fly while in college and wanting to pursue his love of flying, Claude resigned his teaching position and opened an airport in the Carlsbad area. He began his aviation career at Riverside Airport and some time later opened and airport closer to a town called Tracy Field. After a year operating Tracy Field, he went into the Army where he served from 1944 until World War II ended in 1946. Following his discharge, he resumed airport operations at the disbanded Army Airbase in Carlsbad which became the city's full service municipal airport now called the Cavern City Air Terminal. In 1947, the McCauslands obtained the first airport-located Hertz car rental franchise in the country and later added Hertz car rental operations in both Roswell and Ruidoso, NM. Through several decades he continuously operated the airport and car rental businesses which included Cessna and Piper Aircraft dealerships until his retirement in 1994. After a few years of retirement in Carlsbad, Claude and Kay moved to Albuquerque to be closer to their family. In 1956, Claude was appointed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration as the Flight Examiner for New Mexico and West Texas. He held the flight examiner designation for 28 years. In 1960, he served as President of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce and had served several years, before and after, on the Chamber Board. In 1963, New Mexico Governor Jack Campbell appointed Claude to the newly created State Aviation Board. He was reappointed by each successive governor for the next twenty years where he served continuously as Chairman of the Aviation Board. In 1969, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Bank of Carlsbad where he served for many years. Claude was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club, Elks Club, Riverside Country Club and Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. In addition to wife Kay, survivors are son Edward "Buddy" and wife Jeanie; daughters, J.D. "Darleen" and husband Charles Wellborn, Joan and husband Jim Branch; son, Mark and wife Susan; five grandchildren, Westly Wellborn, Damon McCausland and wife Deidre, Kerry and husband Randy Phillips, Tracy and Douglas McCausland. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren; Madison and Taylor Phillips, and Maiti Quinn McCausland. He is also survived by sisters, Margaret Williams and Lola Riley; brother, William McCausland along with many nieces and nephews. Claude was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Hattie Long and Doshe Hegel; and grandson, Matthew McCausland. Rosary will be recited at Risen Savior Catholic Church; 7707 Wyoming Blvd., NE on Monday, January 2, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will also be conducted at Risen Savior Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:45 p.m..
