GROTHUS -- MARGARET JANE TURNQUIST Margaret Jane Turnquist Grothus passed away of natural causes in Albuquerque on March 13, 2012. A long-time resident of Los Alamos, she was born on May 28, 1922, the only child of Dr. Herbert E and Leona M Cavanaugh Turnquist of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a BS in Dietetics. Because her father was stationed in England with the US Army, she elected to serve her internship at the University of Minnesota Hospital to be with her mother. Jobs followed at the Mayo Clinic and at the VA Hospital at Ft. Snelling, Minnesota. When the war ended she adventured to Hawaii with two girlfriends. She supported herself in Honolulu with jobs at Sears and the YMCA, and enjoyed Hula dancing - "lovely hula hands". Dutifully returned to Minneapolis in 1950, she was informed of a job opening for a dietician in Los Alamos by a cousin, Dr. Paul Noth, who was on the medical staff there. Imagining it the first step back to Hawaii, she gained the position as the first dietitian in the Station Hospital, later renamed the Los Alamos Medical Center. She met Edward B Grothus, a Los Alamos laboratory machinist, at a bridge game. In addition to a mutual enthusiasm for bridge, they both owned cars, were Catholic, and owned typewriters. They married on September 1, 1951. Margaret and Ed raised a family of five children and together built a house on Barranca Mesa. While raising her family, Margaret volunteered with Cub Scouts, Brownies and Girl Scouts. She volunteered in the schools and for the Humane Society. She knitted countless pairs of baby booties for the hospital auxiliary. She was a master of all things in the kitchen and enjoyed entertaining, baking and candy making. She did not like to see things go to waste, making apricot jam from the tree outside her garage and applesauce from fruit fallen over the fence from the neighbor. When Ed resigned from 20-years of employment at the laboratory, Margaret and Ed operated The Shalako Shop in Los Alamos, a gift store dealing primarily in Native American jewelry and crafts. After working in the shop all day, Margaret kept the books at night. Margaret was known for her sweet nature, her calm demeanor, dedication to equality among their children, and especially her graciousness. She was not a procrastinator, and she never quit a task once her mind was made up. While Ed typed letters to the newspapers, she typed letters to her family. Single-spaced, multiple-page letters, every week, for years and years. Talent and persistence also gained her the title of Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. Margaret was preceded in death by her son Theodore (1976), her grandson Preston Burns (2002), and her husband Edward (2009). HANNA -- MERVIL Died February 29, 2012, suddenly and peacefully in his sleep. He was two weeks short of his 95th birthday. A native of the Duke City, he was born on March 15, 1917, when Albuquerque had a population of 14,000. New Mexico had only achieved statehood in 1912. The oldest child of Joseph Hanna (Junichi Hanaoka) of Midori, Hiroshima-ken, Japan, and Clara Dee Wade of Narrows, Ohio County, Kentucky, Mervil played football for Albuquerque High and graduated in 1935. He then set out to claim his part of the American dream. He rose above the status that some ascribed to him as "the son of an ol' Jap cook," and became the neighborhood grocer for hundreds of people who shopped at Smiling Food Market on Fourth Street, where he became manager, and the three stores he owned: Bandelier Market at Burton and Wellesley, Hanna's Supermarket at San Pedro and Candelaria, and Corrales Market near Meadowlark Lane. Mervil was a member of Masonic Hiram Lodge 13, and First Baptist Church. As part of the "greatest generation," he was proud of his military service and received honorable discharges from the Merchant Marines and Army. After WWII, while at Smiling Food Market, the handsome manager with jet-black hair and a big smile attracted the attention of Peggy Pollock Olson, a widow who came from Utah to visit her sister, Marjorie Komadina. They married in 1948, when Albuquerque had a population of 49,000. Mervil is survived by two children, David P. Hanna (Charlotte) of Mapleton, UT, Suzanne Midori Hanna, of Moreno Valley, CA; one step-son, Terrance D. Olson (Karen) of Orem, UT; two brothers, Robert J. Hanna (Marge) and Charles Hanna, of Albuquerque; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Hanna, McEuen, Evans, Komadina, Hanaoka, Wade, and Dye families. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Peggy, and son, Phillip E. Hanna, who had Down Syndrome. In memory of Dad's great love for Phillip, he requests contributions, in lieu of flowers, to The Arc of New Mexico, 3655 Carlisle N.E. 87110 (http://arcnm.org/). We miss you, Dad. In our hearts, we will keep your love of music and movies, your passion for politics, your charity to the underdog, and your ability to make friends in coffee shops all over town. We are grateful that the Lord preserved you for the love and great wisdom you gave to us, and we invite all to turn a page of Albuquerque history with a celebration of Dad's life on Saturday, March 24th at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 1100 Coal S.E. Viewing will be held at 9:30am, followed by the funeral at 10:30, interment to be held at Sunset Memorial Park with honor guard at noon.
