DURRIE -- HOPE PEARSALL Passed away in the early hours of August 12, 2011, in Albuquerque, peacefully in her sleep, just one month short of her 96th birthday. She was born on September 17, 1915 in Providence, RI, the middle of three daughters of Harry and Hope Devenish Pearsall. Her family moved to Boston when Hope was six where she attended Miss May's School for Girls and graduated from Radcliffe College, in Cambridge, MA, in 1937 with a B.A. degree in English. At Radcliffe, she flourished in her studies and was popular with her fellow female students, as well as with the Ivy League men of Harvard and Yale. After graduation, she worked for several years in publishing and public relations in Manhattan, where she was a frequent patron of the famed Maxwell's Plum Saloon. After an engagement in New York City, she married Princeton man, John Nicoll Durrie on October 18, 1942 at her parents' home in Chestnut Hill in Boston, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage until her beloved Johnny's death in 1995. They raised two loving children, Patty and Nick, and had four fantastic grandchildren: Justin, Kyle, Scott, and Matthew. She was known to all as Hopie, to a few old friends as Peggy (Pearsall), to a lucky few as Meema or Auntie, and to the luckiest of all, as Mom. She was consistently described as intellectual, classy, kind, sweet, funny, quick with a quip, and generous. She was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt and friend, making every person feel special. Hopie had a wonderful life, growing up in Boston during the years of bathtub gin and prohibition, summering in her parents home in Rockport, MA (which remained her favorite place in the world), then moving to Albuquerque with Johnny and her two babies in 1948, where she remained until her death. Throughout her life, she enjoyed literature, music, singing, birding with Johnny and friends, and athletic activities---skiing until she was 80, and playing tennis until she was 90. In 1940, she and Elizabeth Benson Conant, were the first women to raft the 31 mile Gunnison River Gorge, and were mentioned in the November 15, 1943 issue of Life Magazine. As a lifelong international traveler into her late 80s, Hopie maintained the sense of adventure and curiosity that made her fearless and the eternal optimist. In Albuquerque, she was a charter member of the Tennis Club of Albuquerque, served as President of the NM Symphony Guild, was actively involved in the UNM Faculty Women's Club, Heritage Club of Albuquerque Academy, on the Board of Directors of Sandia Prep, Immanuel Presbyterian Church, then First Presbyterian, the Junior League of Albuquerque, the Tuesday Literary Club, the Romero House for Unwed Mothers (affectionately known as "Casa Boo Boo") and did editing for the University of New Mexico Press. She is predeceased by her husband, John Nicoll Durrie, her parents, Harry and Hope Devenish Pearsall, her sisters, Patricia Pearsall Dutcher and Rosamond ("Posy") Pearsall Ely Ellett, and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Browning Durrie. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Durrie Brewer, of Albuquerque; her son, J. Nicoll ("Nick") Durrie and his wife, Sandy, of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Justin Nicoll Durrie, and his wife Jenelle Giordano, of Portland, OR, Kyle Meriwether Durrie of Portland, OR, Scott Nicoll Brewer of Lubbock, TX, his wife, Paola, and Matthew Durrie Brewer of Albuquerque; Her other surviving family members include three nieces and six nephews. The date for a memorial service will be determined for sometime this autumn. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Animal Humane New Mexico, www.animalhumanenm.org, phone 505-255-5523.
