BOWEN -- Stephen "Pat" Bowen, 93, a long time resident of Tucumcari, NM died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at his home in Albuquerque, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Renee Bowen; daughters, Trish Langley and husband, Robert of Albuquerque, and Linda McMurray and husband, Pat of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Karen Browning and husband, Kurt, Kurston McMurray and wife, Paige, Stephanie Kucinski and husband, Bryan, and Warren Langley and wife, Michelle; six great-granddaughters and six great-grandsons; and numerous other relatives and friends. Pat was born on July 26, 1916 in Tucumcari, NM to E.W. and Mary Bowen and graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1934. He attended the University of Oklahoma, majoring in accounting. Pat returned to Tucumcari in 1937 to engage in the real estate and insurance business. He entered the University of Colorado Law School in the fall of 1942. In October 1944 Pat answered the World War II draft call and served in the U.S. Army infantry until honorably discharged in January, 1946. He returned to the University of Colorado Law School in the fall and graduated in 1947 with a degree of Bachelor of Law. After admittance to the New Mexico Bar in February, 1948, Pat returned to Tucumcari and has since actively engaged in the practice of law, devoting his time to the legal profession as well as to numerous civic, welfare and community project endeavors. He was Assistant District Attorney, 10th Judicial District, NM from 1951-1953 and U.S. Magistrate, of Quay County, NM from 1973-1974. Pat served the New Mexico State Bar as a member of the Board of Commissioners from 1951 to 1960, as president of the State Bar in 1958, as State Bar representative to the American Bar Association House of Delegates 1963-1964, and as a member of the Board of Bar Examiners 1966-1974. Pat served on the Board of Directors at The First National Bank of Tucumcari and Santa Rosa. He was very active in helping to establish the University Of New Mexico School Of Law. Pat received from the State Bar of New Mexico the Professionalism Award and the Fifty Year Service Award in 1998. He was a life member of Tucumcari Lodge Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Tucumcari Lodge, AF&AM, Past Exalted Ruler of the Tucumcari Elks Lodge, and Past President of the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce, and the Tucumcari Rotary Club. Pat enjoyed spending time with his family at Conchas Lake and playing golf with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Pat was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tucumcari and Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Tucumcari, NM on Saturday, October 3, 2009, 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Dunn Funeral Home of Tucumcari, NM (575)461-3815. C DE BACA -- Daniel Lawrence C de Baca, age 61, a resident of Bernalillo, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2009. He is survived by his father, Nazario and wife, Sabina; brothers, Bob C De Baca and wife, Lesly and Nick C de Baca and wife, Julie; nephew, Michael C de Baca; and extensive family. The C de Baca family traveled extensively overseas where Daniel was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia on July 17, 1948. He graduated as Valedictorian from St. Michaels High School in Santa Fe, Class of 1966 and earned a degree in psychology from the University of Tampa, Florida, Class of 1970 where he was also Valedictorian. Daniel will rest in peace with his mother Consuelo; and nephew Nicholas. Daniel's life will be respected with a Memorial Rosary Wednesday, September 30, 2009, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 301 Camino del Pueblo, in Bernalillo. ESPINOSA -- Sylvia Espinosa, age 90, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2009 in El Monte, CA. She was born on April 5, 1919 in San Antonito, NM. She was currently residing in California and formerly of Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her husband Erenio Espinosa in 2001. Sylvia is survived by her loving daughter, Elvira Alvarado and husband John; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Sylvia will be greatly missed. FERRY -- Nelson Ferry, 80 years old, entered his eternal life with Jesus on September 27, 2009. Nelson had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1972. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired Teamster and had been honored for over four million miles of safe driving. Nelson loved baseball and bowling, but most of all, he loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou Ferry; his sons, Rock Ferry, Dale Ferry; and David Ferry, and his daughter, Jeannie Bauder; as well as ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. FERTIG -- John (Jack) L. Fertig, Jr., born August 25, 1925 to John L. and Mabel Healey Fertig in La Junta, CO, died September 24, 2009 in Rio Rancho, NM. Jack is survived by his wife of 40 years, Waltreen (Waddie) S. Fertig; daughter Jane Fertig Paternoster, son-in-law Steve Paternoster; and grandchildren Jackson Cole and Jameson Reed; Sisters-in-law Kay McMann and Marienne Stauffer (Bob); local nieces and nephews are Gregg and Dee McMann and Bill and Lorie Julander, and many more nieces, nephews, and out of town grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Jack attended Albuquerque High for two years before SFRR transferred them back to La Junta where he graduated in 1943. Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Navy, attended V-12 school at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, and later served on USS LST 1148 during WWII, being honorably discharged in 1946. Jack graduated from the University of Denver in 1948, was recalled to the Korean War in 1952, and discharged in late 1953. With his civil engineering degree, Jack was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation, Factory Mutual Engineering, and retired from County of Santa Barbara Flood Control in September, 1989. He and Waddie moved to Rio Rancho immediately upon retirement and Jack served for ten years as a Docent at the Albuquerque Museum of Art & History, was an active member of Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, the Friends of the Library, and the Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club. He will be missed parking cars at the Balloon Fiesta this year. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, 1004 24th St, Rio Rancho, NM. A private interment will take place at a later date in Vista Verde Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to RRPC Music Fund or Storehouse West, both causes close to Jack's heart. LOPEZ -- Jesse M. Lopez, age 83 went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Lovelace Westside Hospital. Jesse is survived by his wife, Ernestina; eight children: Robert J. Lopez and his wife Priscilla, Leonard J. Lopez, Helen L. Lopez, Joseph R. Lopez and his wife Alexandria, Fabian M. Lopez and his wife Gerilyn, Jesse E. Lopez, Alex J. Lopez and his wife Letitia, and John F. Lopez and his wife Lauralee. He also leaves behind seventeen grandchildren: Mark Armijo, Adrian Armijo, Camille Battle, Candice Simoni, Danielle Schaumburg, Leonard Lopez, Erica M. Lopez, Theresa Gabaldon, Jude Lopez, Danea Lopez, Jordon Lopez, Jesse E. Lopez III, James Lopez, Victoria Lopez, Nicole Gonzales, Adam Lopez, Valerie Pauline Lopez, Jason Salaz and Claressa Bellah. Jesse also leaves behind thirteen great-grandchildren; Aja Armijo, Christian Armijo, Marco Alonzo Meneses, Dion Battle, Dorian Clark, Beau Michael Schaumburg, Sophie Schaumburg, Anthony Lopez, Dominic Lopez, Destiny Lopez, Christopher Lopez, Elias Gabaldon and Hailey Gonzales, his siblings; Richard Lopez, Ray Lopez and wife Helen, Frances Vargas and husband Lawrence and Bernadette Ramsey and husband Jim, and sisters-in-law; Rebecca Lopez, Clara Lopez, Lillian Lopez and Florinda Lopez. He was preceded in death by his parents, his eldest daughter Pauline V. Armijo, and grandson Anthony Michael Lopez, siblings Pedro Manuel Lopez, Robert Lopez, Ernestino Lopez, John Lopez, Bernardo Lopez and Jose Lopez. Jesse is a Veteran of "World War II"; he grew up in Albuquerque, NM, the eldest son of Jose Adislado Lopez and Maria Loreto Lopez. Upon completion of his duty for this Country, Jesse went on to college at the University of New Mexico where he earned a Masters Degree in Education. He worked as a school teacher for over 30 years at Isleta Pueblo before retiring. He was an avid sports fan who always had a passion for competition which kept him young, despite his age. Jesse retired from Federal Service in 1985. And along with his wife they spent many happy years together enjoying their large wonderful family. He served with distinction as a soldier in Europe during World War II. He survived being shot down and captured by the Germans at age eighteen. Towards the end of the war he was able to escape a prisoner of war camp and walk back to the American lines. We are all proud of our Hero Jesse M. Lopez, Husband, Father, Grand Father, Great Grand Father, Uncle and Brother. Visitations will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. at the 8th Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. LUSK -- Kathleen Ison Lusk, born in Portales, New Mexico February 17, 1925 to Charles and Ruth Ison, passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico September 26, 2009 at age 84. She was married to Julian Dennis (J.D.) Lusk on July 2, 1940. Kathleen was a housewife and mother of five children. In the 1970s, she became a Clovis Realtor until the early 1990s. The last living of 11 siblings, Kathleen is survived by her children Dennis and Pam Lusk of Albuquerque, Mike and Anna Lusk of Clovis, Tim and Jerri Lusk of Denver, Robin and Bill Thomas of Amarillo, and Roger and Brande Lusk of Tucson; and five grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens, 1601 E. Llano Estacado, Clovis. MAYO -- Virginia Florence Nelson Mayo passed away at home September 26, 2009, after a courageous battle with cervical cancer. She was born in Webster City, Iowa on August 6, 1930, the daughter of C.O. and Clara Nelson. She moved to Albuquerque with her family in 1936. She attended Albuquerque High School and received her BA in accounting from the University of New Mexico in 1950. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, C.O. and Clara Nelson; and her brother Jack. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Dick Mayo; her son Richard; daughter Carol Mayo Cochran and her husband, John; and her only grandchild Rachel Cochran, with whom she, of course, had a very special relationship. Virginia was a practicing accountant for 59 years and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1962, becoming the fifth woman to be certified by the State of New Mexico. She received her certificate the day before her daughter, Carol, was born. After working for several years at what is now known as the Rogoff public accounting firm, she went into private practice, eventually forming her own small business corporation. Virginia was dedicated to her family, profession and clients. She was conservative in nature and had a strong work ethic. She particularly enjoyed tax accounting and financial planning. Virginia was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church for 47 years, and a member of the Naomi Circle of the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed parlor games of all sorts, particularly bridge which she played with her friends at church. At her request, Virginia was cremated. Services will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 10:30 am, with the Reverend Clyde Stanfield officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception immediately following the service, in the Sonshine Cafe of St. John's United Methodist Church, 2626 Arizona St NE. MCMAHAN -- Verena Catherine McMahan peacefully passed away at her home in Albuquerque on Sunday, September 27, 2009. She was 96 years old. Verena is survived by her ten children: Helen Guzman of Rio Rancho, NM, John Charles McMahan of Buffalo, WY, William McMahan of Rock Springs, WY, Constance Fabry of Omaha, NE, Margaret Aho of Pocatello, ID, Thomas McMahan of Greely, CO, Mary Elizabeth Stowe of Kansas City, MO, Teresa Gracheck of Albuquerque, Monica Coan of Albuquerque, and Christopher McMahan of Albuquerque. She is also survived by 35 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Verena was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, John Wood McMahan; her dear granddaughter, Cristina Guzman; and by her two brothers, Ralph Asman and Arnold Asman; and her two sisters, Sybil Roth and Florence Asman. Verena will be remembered as a deeply loving, kind, charitable and patient woman, who constantly gave of herself and sacrificed for her family, friends and neighbors. She was a devoted Catholic and member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and the Third Order of St. Francis for over 50 years. She inspired so many by her example and was a tremendous source of strength and faith for those who knew her. Viewing will be one hour prior to rosary. MORA -- Ambrosio Mora, 72, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on September 28, 2009. NIPPERT -- Bette J. Nippert, 85, a resident of Albuquerque for 48 years, died Sunday, September 27, 2009. She is survived by her daughters, Jill Marple of Albuquerque, Stacy Powell of Rio Rancho, NM and Kimberley Day of Rio Rancho, NM; five grandchildren, Stephanie Moseley and husband, Mike, Lisa Milmine and husband, Clint, Stacy Day, Matthew Day and Ryan Day; four great-grandchildren, Connor Day, Landon Day, Gabriel Komarek, and Aubrey Komarek; and numerous other relatives and friends. Bette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lt. Col. John Nippert.; and brother, Carlton W. Hill, Jr. She was born on February 29, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Carlton W. and Kathryn Aichele Hill. She met John Nippert at a USO dance and they were married in 1948. Her life was spent as a military wife, traveling the world and residing in England and Germany. They chose to retire in New Mexico in 1968 because of their love for New Mexico. Bette belonged to an exercise and hiking group and was very creative and talented. She also loved music and dance. Bette was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. OCHOA -- Camilo Ochoa passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 26, 2009 surrounded by his family. Camilo is survived by his wife, Sandra; sons, David, Paul, Benny, Clifford, Adam, and Richard; and step-sons, Jeff, and Will. Camilo served in the US Army and retired from the VA Hospital. SANCHEZ -- Clorinda (Clora) R. Sanchez, 84, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was called home to her heavenly Father on Saturday, September 26, 2009 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. She was born in Watrous, New Mexico on December 29, 1924 to Jose Rafael Ortiz and Aliberta Hernandez. She graduated from Robertson High School in Las Vegas and resided in Albuquerque for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Arturo B. Sanchez on June 22, 1986; daughter Doris; and three sisters, Lucy C de Baca, Emma Carlson and Annie Nichol. She is survived by her three sons, Edward and wife Cathy, Robert and wife Mary and Ralph; and sister, Celia Macias. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Arturo Sanchez and wife Theresa, Marissa Sanchez, Carlos Sanchez, Alicia Sanchez and husband Diego, Tomas Sanchez, Rachel Maestas and husband Gabriel; four great-grandchildren, Sean and Caitlyn Sanchez, Mia and Marcus Maestas; and several nephews and nieces. Clorinda loved to play bingo. Prior to her illness she volunteered at the Veteran's Hospital and was an active member in VFW Post 401 Auxiliary and MOC Auxiliary. She was a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Visitation will be held at 6:00 p.m Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at Salazar and Sons Mortuary. STRONG -- Mona Lou Wilson Strong, born in Santa Fe on April 22, 1926, passed away peacefully the morning of September 27, 2009 at her home with her daughters by her side. A lifelong New Mexican, who studied UNM and joined the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She loved politics, law and crossword puzzles. She enjoyed living at the Park Plaza Condos and playing bridge with her friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mama and Daddy Heard; her parents, Mona and Fred Wilson; her brothers, Fred Jr., Edward, Guy and Little Allen; her loving husband, Addison L Strong; and her daughter, Mona Janice (Jan) Strong who was always so full of life. Mona Lou was part of a historical New Mexican family. Daddy Heard was a rancher (High Lonesome Ranch) in Lea County and later served as the first Mayor of Carlsbad. Fred Wilson was an attorney and served terms as a Judge in both Alb, Carlsbad and Santa Fe, and was instrumental in the development of NM interstate water rites. Her husband, Addison Strong served as a Probate Judge and then as one of the first Magistrate Judges of Alb. Mona Lou is survived by her daughter, Lynn Blackburn, and grandson Wesley; her daughter, Donna Strong, granddaughter Victoria and great grand-daughter Alex; Jan's daughter and her children, Ty and Shelby. She leaves behind lots of family with the Davidsons, Heards, Wilsons and Yates and many loving friends. Mona Lou will be greatly missed as she had one of the sweetest and kindest hearts. We will keep her in our hearts and memories forever and will always try and make her proud. And she will always be remembered as one class act. TINKCOM -- Mike Tinkcom, 48, a Albuquerque resident, passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest on Saturday, September 26, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife Denise Bencoe; son Kyle Tinkcom; father James Tinkcom; three sisters, Mary Tinkcom and her companion Betty, Martha Brisky and her husband Roy, Margaret Listopad her husband Evan and their children; one brother, Matthew Tinkcom and his companion Matt V; his in-law's, Michael Bencoe and family, Dave Bencoe his wife Lori and their son, Troy, Melanie Tuck, her daughter, Samantha Updegraff her husband Loren and their family along with many extended family members and friends. Mike was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Alberta Frost Tinkcom. Mike had a very successful career in metal fabrication. As a young man Mike completed a five year Federal Millwright apprenticeship and was the winner of a three state competition of Millwrights in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. He placed 4th in a follow - up competition for all of North America. Mike was also certified in SMAW, MIG, TIG nuclear welding and was recently CNC certified. During his life Mike attended Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland and CNM in Albuquerque, NM. In his leisure time Mike liked to read, he liked history and politics, enjoyed spending time with his dog's, Oliver, Ginger, and Lady, and creating metal sculptures. Cremation has taken place. WOODARD -- Jane Cahalane Woodard passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009 after suffering a brain hemorrhage in her home. She was born in Keene, NH on October 21, 1922, grew up in New England, and attended college in Boston. She and her husband Bill lived in California, Washington, and Hawaii while her husband served in the US Navy until they settled in Albuquerque in 1954. They moved to what is now the Village of Los Ranchos in 1957. She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, and was a voracious reader. She loved to play big band and ragtime tunes on the organ and piano. She loved autumn and the holidays that followed. She was a card-carrying member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of Howden Guild of St. John's Cathedral in the 1960's. She loved snowy days and would make a batch of her "secret recipe" donuts on those days. She hauled her children to horse shows all over the state and managed to look like she enjoyed watching them compete in places like Roswell in June when the temperature was well over 100 degrees with no shade. She was active in the Sandia Dog Obedience Club and showed her corgis in obedience for many years. She served as secretary to innumerable horseshows while her children were showing horses. She wrote and researched articles for the national Morgan Horse magazine. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by her son, Steven C. Woodard and his wife, Deane, of Socorro; Reg Woodard and his wife, Jessica, of Albuquerque; Janie Riccobene and husband, Tom Riccobene, of Albuquerque; grandkids, Mark Woodard and his wife, Val Cuccucio, Tim Woodard and his wife, Eleana, Melissa Kay Woodard, Melanie Riccobene Jarboe and husband Andrew, Rebecca Woodard-Torres and husband, David, Ryan Woodard and wife, Carlye, Benjamin Woodard, Dominic Riccobene, and Kurt Green; great-granddaughters, Olivia and Rebecca, numerous nieces and nephews throughout the country; and her beloved Silver. She was preceded in death by her son, William K. Woodard III; husband, William K. Woodard, MD; and her parents, Marion S. Cahalane and Reginald F. Cahalane. Cremation has already taken place. XIMENES -- Maria Castillo Ximenes was born in Floresville, Texas and was 83 years of age when she passed away Saturday, September 26, 2009. Maria died of an injury incurred in a fall while hospitalized at Woman's Hospital. She and husband Vicente Ximenes shared a loving relationship for 66 years. Maria was the anchor of the family of four college educated children. Maria's mother died at childbirth and an aunt raised her through early childhood and high school. A chance meeting at a Saturday night dance was the start of a life of dedication to family and country. Maria was an Air Force wife and the one who put her husband through a UNM Master's Degree in Economics. Maria partnered with Vicente in the Agency for International Development's goal for better relations between the U.S., Ecuador, and Panama. Maria traveled with Vicente as an officer and member of the American GI Forum in their quest for civil rights for the Mexican American. Maria was a major contributor in the construction of the American GI Forum National Headquarters in Albuquerque. When President Johnson called them for the appointment to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Maria and Vicente continued their work in civil rights in Washington, D.C. and the White House. Maria was present at the White House Ceremony for the EEOC appointment and the Cabinet Committee on Mexican American Affairs. In 1973 Maria returned to Albuquerque to begin a less hectic life style. Maria devoted her life to keeping the family together. "Do not forget to pray" was the conclusion of a conversation with the family. Maria is survived by husband Vicente; son Ricardo Ximenes and wife Pat Ximenes of Los Lunas; daughter Olivia Ximenes and husband Patrick Harrington of Cody Wyoming; Ana Maria Ximenes and Steve Baroch of Castle Rock, CO; granddaughter Teresa Ximenes and husband Mike Merrill of Dallas; great granddaughters Chloe Ximenes Merrill and Madison Ximenes Merrill of Dallas. Oldest son Steve Ximenes is deceased. Maria is a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and Our Lady of Fatima Ladies' Guild. She is also a member of the CCC Alumni Association. Maria lived at La Vida Llena life care community.
