BOWEN -- Stephen "Pat" Bowen, 93, a long time resident of Tucumcari, NM died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at his home in Albuquerque, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Renee Bowen; daughters, Trish Langley and husband, Robert of Albuquerque, and Linda McMurray and husband, Pat of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, Karen Browning and husband, Kurt, Kurston McMurray and wife, Paige, Stephanie Kucinski and husband, Bryan, and Warren Langley and wife, Michelle; six great-granddaughters and six great-grandsons; and numerous other relatives and friends. Pat was born on July 26, 1916 in Tucumcari, NM to E.W. and Mary Bowen and graduated from Tucumcari High School in 1934. He attended the University of Oklahoma, majoring in accounting. Pat returned to Tucumcari in 1937 to engage in the real estate and insurance business. He entered the University of Colorado Law School in the fall of 1942. In October 1944 Pat answered the World War II draft call and served in the U.S. Army infantry until honorably discharged in January, 1946. He returned to the University of Colorado Law School in the fall and graduated in 1947 with a degree of Bachelor of Law. After admittance to the New Mexico Bar in February, 1948, Pat returned to Tucumcari and has since actively engaged in the practice of law, devoting his time to the legal profession as well as to numerous civic, welfare and community project endeavors. He was Assistant District Attorney, 10th Judicial District, NM from 1951-1953 and U.S. Magistrate, of Quay County, NM from 1973-1974. Pat served the New Mexico State Bar as a member of the Board of Commissioners from 1951 to 1960, as president of the State Bar in 1958, as State Bar representative to the American Bar Association House of Delegates 1963-1964, and as a member of the Board of Bar Examiners 1966-1974. Pat served on the Board of Directors at The First National Bank of Tucumcari and Santa Rosa. He was very active in helping to establish the University Of New Mexico School Of Law. Pat received from the State Bar of New Mexico the Professionalism Award and the Fifty Year Service Award in 1998. He was a life member of Tucumcari Lodge Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Tucumcari Lodge, AF&AM, Past Exalted Ruler of the Tucumcari Elks Lodge, and Past President of the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce, and the Tucumcari Rotary Club. Pat enjoyed spending time with his family at Conchas Lake and playing golf with family and friends. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Pat was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tucumcari and Services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Tucumcari, NM on Saturday, October 3, 2009, 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Dunn Funeral Home of Tucumcari, NM (575)461-3815.
