ALBERTI -- Joseph "Buster" Alberti passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 15, 2009, eight years to the day that he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Teresa. Joseph was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 2, 1922, to Joseph and Mary Alberti, and had a brother Robert and sister Arlene Dauman, who both preceded him in death. Joseph was a three-time baseball letterman of Madison High School and made the World Telegram Hall of Fame as a second baseman. When visited by a scout for the Red Sox, his mother insisted he attend college instead. He also made the varsity football team when asked to try out his senior year. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy the day after Pearl Harbor and served for four years on the U.S.S. Delta in both theaters of operation. When he returned from the war, he married his sweetheart, Teresa Testa, on July 4, 1948. Joseph and Teresa had three sons, Richard, William and Russell. The family moved to Albuquerque in 1970, where they went on to own two local businesses: the Far West Club and Chase Hardware, still family-owned today. In addition to being a prominent local businessman, Joseph was active in state and local politics and served on several campaigns. He is survived by his uncle, Charlie Di Melfi; brothers-in-law, Henry Daumann and Tom Testa and his wife, Bonnie; sons, Richard, William, and Russell; grandchildren, Valerie, Aaron, Angela, Joseph, Terisa, Michael, Lauren, Anthony; and 10 great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his vibrant personality, devotion to his family, and commitment to his country and community. BOYER -- Andrew Joseph Boyer, age 23, of Albuquerque, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2009. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Rebecca Boyer of Albuquerque; two sisters, Cassie Boyer and Caitlin Boyer, both of Albuquerque; his maternal grandmother, Marjorie Braun of St. Clair Shores, Michigan; and a large extended family in Michigan, Florida, and California. Drew was a member of the 2004 Graduating Class of Albuquerque High School and attended Eastern New Mexico University. He was an offensive lineman for both schools and also played basketball in high school where he was also a member of the wrestling team. Drew was currently employed with Alliance Audio Visual in Albuquerque. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 18, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. DARWIN -- Mrs. Kitty Hazel Darwin ("Hazie"), 97 Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away August 16, 2009. Hazie was born August 26, 1911 in Sterling City, Texas the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mansker. She was married to Ray S. Darwin in 1933 and is the mother of James and Tom Darwin. Hazie is survived by her sister Evelyn Henry, her four grandchildren, Tom Darwin, Jim Darwin and wife Theresa, George Darwin and Ben Darwin and wife Kathy; her four great grandchildren, Evan, Andrew, Paige and Alex. Hazie grew up in Texas ranching country where she road horseback to school and tended to the family goats and sheep. Hazie and Ray moved to Albuquerque in 1949 where they raised their family and created lifelong friends. During her lifetime, Hazie lived through two world wars, saw the first and last man walk on the moon, the invention of television and the personal computer. She was the perfect Texas lady a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, committed Christian, great cook and friend to all that she met. She will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Ave NE, Albuquerque. Flowers arranged by Peoples Flowers. DURAN -- Carlos Duran passed away August 15, 2009 at the age of 79. Mr. Duran was a United States Air Force veteran and was retired from the US Post Office. Mr. Duran was preceded in death by his mother and father, Maria and Eleuterio Duran. He is survived by his wife, Jennie Duran; sons, Dennis Duran, Vincent Duran, and Stanley Duran and wife, Julie; sisters, Porfiria Duran, Alberta Sandoval and husband, John, and Merenciana Duran; and grandchildren, Nikolas and Philip Duran. FLEISSNER -- Betty L. Fleissner, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at her residence. She was born August 13, 1925 in Quincy, Illinois to Paul Kinscherff and Osee Borrowman. She was a real estate broker and land developer in the Eagle Nest, New Mexico area. She is survived by Con Fleissner, father of her children of Las Cruces, NM; one son, Dr. Paul Fleissner and wife Dr. Rachel Fleissner of Fargo, North Dakota; one daughter, Holly Fleissner and husband Richard A. Peterson of Silver City; one sister, Paulette Pettingell of Mt. Juliette, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Sage and Merrit Peterson; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Eugene Lightfoot, WWII Air Force Pilot who died in action; two brothers, Robert and John Kinscherff and one sister, Nancy Cook Matzen. GALLEGOS -- BENJAMIN H. GALLEGOS Age 76, our Lord blessed our father by joining him with our mother in Heaven, peacefully surrounded by his family on the early morning of August 15, 2009. Ben was born on September 26, 1932 in Santa Rita, new Mexico, to Martin and Lucy Gallegos who preceded him in death. Ben was raised in Bayard, New Mexico. Ben attended Western New Mexico University, where he graduated #1, Magna Cum Laude, earning his degree in Business Administration. He was awarded The Wall Street Journal Award for academic excellence and achievement. He was also accepted to Harvard University. The most remarkable thing about our daddy is that he accomplished all this, married, raising three little children and working the graveyard shift at the Santa Rita Copper Mine! He retired from state government, where he held various positions with the Department of Finance and Administration, the Department of Human Services, specifically Administrator of both the Ft. Bayard Hospital and the Miners Hospital in Raton, NM. He was an amazing individual and mentor with incredible values, strength, integrity and courage. He fought a difficult physical struggle throughout his life with grace and dignity. He will always be remembered for his compassion, devotion and dedication to the people with special needs and the elderly citizens of New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Eugenia Mable Gallegos; and brothers, Luciano, Cosme, Paul and Sam Gallegos. GARCIA -- Emilia Garcia, 85, died on August 15, 2009 peacefully with her family around her. She is survived by children, son Albert and wife, Susie Garcia, daughter Ada Garcia and companion, Joe Roybal; grandchildren, Bernadette Garcia husband, Raul Chavez, Rosemarie Marquez and husband, Arnold Marquez, and Stephanie Garcia and companion Michael Anderson; great-grandchildren, Joseph Cordova, Chaunte Marquez, Jordan Marquez, Ciara Marquez & Arnold Marquez, Jr., Sheryese Garcia, Mari Chavez, Alicia Chavez, Michael Anderson, Jr., Mateo & Annaleesa Maldonado and Darlene Roybal. GREEN -- Ronald Dale Green, 52, entered into the arms of Our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Beloved husband, son, and brother, he was a shining light placed on this earth for too little time. Ron passed quietly, in his sleep, at home in McKinney, Texas. He is survived by wife Cindy Green; and therapy dog Cheyenne of Wichita, Kansas; his parents Dale and Alma Green of Socorro, New Mexico; brother James Green, wife Yolanda; and nephew Wesley, of Santa Fe, NM; and sister Janet Green and husband Eddie Binder of Las Cruces, NM. He is also survived by in-laws Donald and Shirley Gasper of Anthony, KS; sister in-law Gayla Fox, husband Mike, and sons Westin and Jarret of Harper, KS; He also leaves numerous aunts, cousins, relatives and friends in Kansas, New Mexico and Texas. Born November 4, 1956 in El Paso, TX, Ron grew up in Socorro, NM. A three-sport letterman at Socorro High, he was an outstanding basketball player and proud graduate in 1974. At New Mexico State University, Ron played basketball for one year under legendary coach Lou Henson and went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance in 1978. He was also a member of the national business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi. Ron began his career working with the Federal Land Bank in Las Cruces N.M., and transferred to Montrose, Colorado and then to Wichita, KS. He excelled in working with aviation finance, first working in Wichita at Raytheon then moving to Dallas, Texas in 2007 to work for CIT Aerospace as Vice President of Portfolio Management. While in Wichita Ron met and married the love of his life, Cindy. They were wed on July 14, 1990. They both considered Wichita their home, even after moving to McKinney, TX. Ron, an accomplished golfer, returned to New Mexico Tech Golf Course to play in the Conrad Hilton Open and the Elfego Baca Shoot, which he won once. Ron played numerous tournaments in Wichita and had his "hole in one" at Tallgrass Country Club. His love of basketball led him to be an avid Wichita State University basketball supporter. LUCERO -- Macedon Lucero, age 69, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather and brother, was gently handed over to the Lord in presents of his loving family, Friday, August 14, 2009. Mr. Lucero is preceded in death by his two sons, David Lucero and Macedon Lucero Jr.; his parents, Abran and Conrada Lucero; his brother, Phil Lucero; and a sister, Vickie Almendarez. MCCORMICK -- Frederick Bossert McCormick, Sr., age 87, a World War II and Korean War Naval aviator, and high school teacher, died at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, August 4, 2009 of a heart attack. He was born in Long Island, New York, in 1922. At 17, Mr. McCormick signed on as a Navy seaman after World War II began. Upon being accepted to officer flight school, he began training on a "Yellow Peril" N2S Stearman biplane. He flew a PB2Y Coronado "Flying boat" seaplane throughout the Pacific theatre during the war. He later served in the Korean War, and also flew 65 missions into South Pacific typhoons at 400 feet above the sea to gather weather research for the Navy. After World War II, he graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, where he met Catherine (Beti) Henriot, his wife of 52 years until her death in 2005. Upon retiring from the Navy, he taught English and Journalism at Bellingham High School, Bellingham, Washington, for 20 years. He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Reid Macy and Jane Elizabeth McCormick; two sons, Dr. Frederick Bossert McCormick, Jr. and Captain Stuart Alan McCormick; and seven grandchildren. PIECH -- Andrew Mark Piech, 23, a resident of Albuquerque, died on August 15, 2009. He is survived by his parents, Gerald and Paula Piech, of Albuquerque; brothers Philip Piech, of Albuquerque, David Piech, of Houston, TX, and Andrew's girlfriend, of two years, Cassie Martinez. Andrew graduated from Eldorado High School in 2004, and from Universal Technical Institute of Phoenix, AZ in 2005. He enjoyed working on cars, riding his motorcycle, Guinness drought, playing video games, watching UFC fights, skateboarding, and graffiti artwork. Andrew was a kind and loving son, brother, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. ROMO -- Manuel J., 79, a resident of Albuquerque, went home to be with our Heavenly Father, Saturday, August 15, 2009. Manuel is predeceased by his parents Justo and Maria Estella (Castillo) Romo, and his brothers Cerafin Romo and Gilberto Romo. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 55 years, Josephine (Herrera) Romo, his children; Thomas Richard Romo, David George Romo and wife MaryAnne and Joseph Alfred Romo and his wife Gloria. Grandchildren; Justin Romo and wife April, Jocinda Romo, Katrina Romo, Andrea Romo, Angelique Romo, and great grandchildren; Alicia, Tessia, and Yuri Justin, his sister Ida Maestas , and his brother Ricky Romo and his wife Lugi. Manuel loved playing his guitar, and fixing watches, he enjoyed the intricacy of the watch movements. SANCHEZ -- Mary Tabet Sanchez, age 88, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away peacefully, on Friday, August 14, 2009, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease that she fought with a deep faith, grace and strength. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church and regularly attended Bible studies and worship services at Manzano Del Sol Good Samaritan Village where she lived for the last 5 years. Mary was a Belen School bus driver for the kindergarten and special needs children for many years, but her role as homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother was most important to her. She was a lively and friendly person who loved to dance, play bingo and get together with family and friends. She had a beautiful spirit and a kind and giving heart. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Tranquilino "Kilo" Sanchez; parents, Carlos and Onesima Garcia Tabet and five brothers, Ben, Frank, Pete, Carlos, and Joseph Tabet. Mary is survived by her two loving daughters, Viola and Regina Sanchez; two adored grandchildren, Marc and Dale Sanchez; her devoted sister, Clara Sanchez; five sisters-in-law, Lily B. SANCHEZ -- Stephen Sanchez, Sr., 80 Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Brother Stephen Sanchez, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully at the family home surrounded by family members on Saturday, August 15, 2009. Stephen was born in Santa Rosa, NM on April 6, 1929 to Alfredo C. and Anita Sanchez. He is the eldest of his 11 surviving brothers and sisters. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1947. Upon graduation he attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri. He married Lucinda (Cindie) V. Romo on June 7, 1951. He worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1989. He worked at various depots from Tucumcari to El Paso. In 2000 Steve and Cindie moved the family from Alamogordo to Tularosa. His hobbies included gardening, reading and riding his mule, Lindo Lee. He was always busy and energetic with his home and property. Steve was active in the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary's Council - 3rd and 4th degree. He attended St. Jude's Catholic Church from 1966 to 2000. After moving to Tularosa he was an active member of St. Francis de Paula Church. Stephen is survived by his wife Cindie, of the family home; daughter Virginia A Bacue, husband Ralph of Nashville, TN and their children Patrick J. Bacue (2nd Lt, USAF) of Cheyenne, WY and Stephanie A. Bacue (2nd Lt, USAF) of San Angelo, TX; daughter Christina M. Padilla and husband Gregory of Silver City, NM; son, Stephen Sanchez, Jr., wife Tina and their children James S. and Michael C. Sanchez all of Albuquerque, NM, son, David Andrew Sanchez, Sr. of Tularosa and his children David Andrew Sanchez, Jr., Matthew S. Sanchez and Tamara G. Sanchez all of Dardanelle, AR; 4 brothers and 7 sisters. Rosary will be recited at 11:00am on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 the Catholic Church in Puerto de Luna. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated following the Rosary at noon. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Santa Rosa. SANDLIN -- Mary Ena Eubanks Sandlin, 83, originally from Shreveport, LA., passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 16, 2009 in Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her daughters Linda Jones and husband Denny of Tempe, Arizona, Susan Kienzel and husband Marvin of Albuquerque, and Marilyn Eubanks of Shreveport, Louisiana; grandchildren Trey Kienzel, Desirae Myers and husband Paul, Christopher Kienzel and wife Tara, Serenity DeLoach, Casey Jones, Joel Daws, and Delanie Daws; and great-grandson Hunter DeLoach. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Paul Sandlin. Mary moved from Shreveport to Albuquerque in 2006, most recently residing at Sunrise Assisted Living, where she was very active and enjoyed her relationships with the staff, caregivers, and residents. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd NE. Cremation has taken place. TAFOYA -- Joseph "Joe" Montoya Tafoya, 86, resident of Albuquerque, passed away in his home Monday, August 17, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita Lopez Tafoya; son, Joseph R. Tafoya and wife, Penny Lindgren; grandsons, Dominic Matthew, and Joseph Par William; sisters, Viola Gurule of Ojo Caliente, NM, and Natalia "Nattie" Baca and husband, Phil; brother-in-law, Johnny Serrano, all of Albuquerque; sister-in-law, Elma Lopez of Socorro; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was born April 11, 1923 in Polvadera, NM. He was the sixth of thirteen children born to Juan P. and Isabelita M. Tafoya. He and his loving wife, Rita, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June of 2009. Joe was of the greatest generation who served honorably in the 8th Air Force in England in WW II. His unit was sent to Normandy and Utah Beach, they fought through France and into Weisbaden, Germany. Before his discharge, he was a security guard for the Nurnberg trials. He returned from WW II and received his degree in Industrial Arts from Highland University. After teaching for four years, he worked in the Albuquerque area for 33 years, retiring from General Electric in 1985. Before and after retirement, Joe and Rita traveled extensively including a trip to their ancestral homes in Tafalla and Majorica, Spain. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, August 19, 2009, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 19, 2009, 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima. TARVIN -- Eloise B. Tarvin, a beloved Sister and Aunt, passed away peacefully at home on August 14, 2009. She was a longtime resident of Albuquerque and a faithful member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church from 1960 until she became ill. Her husband, Mack Tarvin, of 30 years, preceded her in death. "Lois" was a true friend, always full of life and loved to laugh. She is survived by her brother, Will Brown, and wife, Anne; sister, Barbara Baker and sister Betty Mills and husband, Melvin; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
