DERRY -- Vivien Derry passed away peacefully on the evening of July 24, 2009 at the Woodmark Assisted Living facility in Albuquerque. Vivien came to Silver City, New Mexico in 1946 from Arkansas where she was born on Ozone Mountain in 1916. She made the entire journey by train to be with her first husband, Bill Wagner who, among many others, had found Silver City as a place to recover from tuberculosis. Years later as a single mother, she was office manager for E. Cosgrove's Hardware Store on Bullard Street. She also worked briefly for an abstract and title insurance company, where she taught herself to be an abstractor. Later, she and her husband, Clyne Derry, opened Derry Abstract and Title Company which she operated for 19 years until her retirement. She was known by everyone as a friendly, hardworking business woman and mother with a great sense of humor. She and Clyne enjoyed traveling and after retirement they toured every state in the contiguous US in their RV. In 2005 she moved to Albuquerque with her husband for health reasons. She lived her last three years at The Woodmark Assisted Living facility. She is preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters; her husband Clyne; and her son-in-law, Dave Gerritson. She is survived by her daughter Linda Pace Gerritson of Silver City, Ken Wagner and his wife Margo of Albuquerque, and Bill Cobb and his partner Sam Mayer, also of Albuquerque. She has two grandchildren Clarissa Wagner and Chet Wagner. At her request no memorial services are planned. Her family wishes to extend gratitude to the entire staff of The Woodmark who filled her last years with attention and tender-loving care and to her wonderful doctor, Elizabeth Morgan who was always available and went way beyond to give Vivien tremendous medical care. Their deep appreciation also extends to the Hospice of the Sandias and the individual caregivers who gently cared for her at the end. A Favorite Poem of Vivien: God hath not promised skies always blue- Flower strewn pathways all our lives through. God hath not promised sun without rain- Joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But, God hath promised strength for the day. Rest for the labor; light for the way. Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy and undying love.

DURAND -- Stephen R. Durand, 56. A memorial gathering for sharing memories of Stephen R. Durand will be planned for his birthday in October. Arrangements will be announced at a later time. Stephen Roland Durand was born October 10, 1952 in Washington, DC to Clara and Roland E. Durand, and died at his home in Portales, NM on July 28, 2009 of Malignant Melanoma. Stephen's father was in the military, and consequently, his family moved several times. On two different occasions, they were stationed in England where he attended kindergarten and later, junior high. He was a 1970 graduate of Logansport High School in Logansport, IN. Stephen did his undergraduate work at Purdue University where he had planned to study engineering. However, he took a class in anthropology, and a lifetime love of archaeology was born. After earning his bachelor's degree, he moved to Portales, NM where he earned a Master's Degree in Anthropology from Eastern New Mexico University. While doing his graduate work, he worked on the Salmon Ruins site near Farmington and at the Rio Puerco Valley Archaeological Project northwest of Albuquerque. His doctoral studies were completed in 1992 through the University of Washington. From 1983 until 1991 he was employed at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, NV. In 1990, he was sent to the Island of Cyprus to work on a dig site, and it was there that he met his future wife, Kathy Roler. They were married on February 14, 1992 in Tempe, AZ. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portales. Stephen came to Eastern as an Assistant Professor in the fall of 1991, and was a full professor at the time of his death. He was very active in the Faculty Senate, where he had served two terms as President. He was also the Graduate Coordinator for the Anthropology Dept. Stephen loved teaching, and helping students come to share his passion for archaeology. Another love was motorcycles. Stephen had ridden most of his life. One of the highlights of his summer was an annual ten day ride he made with his friend Larry Baker. He and his wife, Kathy made a ride together on their cycles in April 2007 to attend the annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology in Austin, TX. He also enjoyed participating in the annual Toys for Tots Motorcycle Run. Yet another interest was photography. He had learned so much about photography on his own, that he had developed a course which he taught on Imaging in Anthropology. Stephen is survived by his wife, Kathy of their home; his only daughter, Sarah Durand also of the home; and a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Cindy Durand of Circle Pines, MN. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary, 575-356-4455.

His nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and other small people along the way adored him. He was their mentor, friend, and confidante. Paul had many fond memories on this journey of life. He enjoyed record collecting, antiquing, golfing, drawing, music, dancing, and Bible study. He loved spending quality time with family and friends. Paul was a man of honor whose kind and thoughtful ways earned the respect and trust of all he met. He wanted to be the "perfect patient" and succeeded by keeping a positive attitude and treating everyone around him with patience, kindness, humor, and love. He never complained; he just learned to cope with the daily limitations imposed by his condition. He worked until the end. Paul put his destiny in the hands of the Lord and has found peace for eternity. He felt blessed with the support that he received from everyone. He touched our hearts in a way that will always be remembered. His humble perspective never allowed him to take anyone or anything for granted. He will be dearly missed. The family appreciates the outpouring of love, prayers, well wishes, and donations of time and money received during these days of medical challenges.
