POTTENGER -- David James Pottenger November 24, 1966 - September 29, 2008 David James Pottenger of Albuquerque passed away Monday at the age of 41. David was preceded in death by his grandmother Mary May Pottenger, father Robert William Pottenger, and step-father Buddy Scott. He is survived by his wife Harumi and their three sons, Arthur, Brennos, and Hamish, and three daughters, Maki, Ayumi, and Kana, ages 8-17; his mother Dottie Margaret Scott; siblings John Robert Pottenger, Mary Susan Hurst, Andra Lee Pottenger, Robert Mark Pottenger, and Daniel Matthew Pottenger; and 14 nieces and nephews. Foreshadowing his love of family and searching for the right place to settle down, Thanksgiving Day brought David into the world in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1966. He enrolled in local high schools, demonstrating academic promise with a high IQ, and attended the local ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1985 David left Arizona to serve a two-year mission for the LDS Church in Fukuoka, Japan. Then in 1988 he returned to Japan and married Harumi Matsumoto in the Tokyo temple of the LDS Church. Moving back to the United States, David and Harumi settled temporarily in Arizona. David pursued a double major in Japanese language and Asian history, with a minor in Mandarin, at Arizona State University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1994. With his growing family in tow, David then moved to Oxford, Mississippi, where he earned a juris doctor degree from the School of Law at the University of Mississippi in 1996. With his fluency in the Japanese language and love of Japanese culture, David (and family) received a prestigious scholarship from the government of Japan to study and engage in post-graduate research at the Kyushu University Faculty of Law in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1997. In 1998, after completion of studies in Fukuoka, David and family returned to the United States, establishing their final residence in New Mexico. David first served as an assistant district attorney in Socorro before moving the family to Albuquerque. Pursuing private practice, he was licensed to practice law in New Mexico as well as in the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Nation, and the Acoma Pueblo Nation. David's legal specializations included commercial litigation, international property rights, and Indian law. He served on several professional boards and committees, including the New Mexico State Bar Medical Review Board and the New Mexico State Bar Indian Law Certification Standards Committee. With an avid interest in family history, David explored the record of his ancestors through genealogical research, discovering, among other things, deeper roots of the Pottenger family line in Scotland. But beyond his role as "family historian," David had a deep devotion to his own family, always teaching and enjoying life with his children, as well as his many nephews and nieces. David's seriousness of purpose, passion for learning, and sense of humor will be deeply missed and never forgotten. The final journey of David James Pottenger will take him to his birthplace of Phoenix, Arizona. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 10, 2:00 p.m., at Greenwood Memory Lawn, 2300 W. Van Buren Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Pottenger Family Assistance Account at any Bank of America.
