AKER -- Gladys Irene Lehman Aker was the fourth of seven siblings born to Simon A. Lehman and Edith Mable Wenger Lehman in Green Township, Chambersburg, PA: Robert, Earl, Simon Jr., Gladys, Pauline, Charles and Anna Lois. Her mother died when Gladys was 8 years old, May 1936. Her father remarried a widow, Mary Finkenbinder McCoy, with one child, David McCoy of Carlisle, PA, April 1938. To this union, two children were born: Ronald "Jack" and Betty Louise. By this time the Lehman family had moved from Franklin County to Cumberland County, Mechanicsburg, PA. They were a humble farm family. Gladys began her education at Eberly's Consolidated School. She took her High schooling at Messiah Bible College Academy, and began her College work there. She graduated from Lancaster School of Nursing while working at the Elizabethtown Crippled Children's Hospital, came back to Messiah, finished her degree and served as College nurse. She was converted at a young age, followed the leading of Christ, and upon the clear, definite leadings of the Lord, left for Africa to serve Brethren In Christ Missions for two terms from 1953 to 1967. After returning from active duty in Africa, she followed her nursing career, went to Cuba, New Mexico, took a course on Midwifery, and worked for a branch of the Presbyterian Health Association for the State, with her earnings, after living expenses were paid, going to the Brethren In Christ Navajo Mission. Gladys has unselfishly given herself to public nursing right on until February of this year, 2008. Now she is at rest with her Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ. Gladys remained single until her 65th birthday, October 30, 1992, when she announced her engagement with Loyd Aker, who was five years her superior. He had a gas business and at least one year furnished the gas for the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta of Albuquerque. Lloyd developed a deep appreciation and love for Gladys while he was one of the ambulance drivers for the Farmington area. She was always pleased when he was the driver because he never came with accident patients under the influence. On March 13, 1993, Gladys and Lloyd were united in marriage by Lloyd's brother, Ben, and her brother, Simon, Jr. They have been a great blessing to each other. They lived in Rio Rancho until moving into their present apartment in Albuquerque. Over the years she has received many awards and honors: Served as President of the State's Cancer Society, and in 2003 she received The Nursing Excellence Award of New Mexico, chosen by election via Blue Cross and Blue Shield organizations. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, three brothers: Simon, Charles, and Ronald; one sister, Betty Swartz, and many Lehman nieces and nephews. Also surviving are, one daughter, Sharon Sexson (and husband, Nelson); one son, Richard; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many Aker nieces and nephews. Gladys held her Membership with the Mechanicsburg Brethren In Christ Church for all of her Missionary years. She was well known and loved by all and was known as "Auntie Gladys" by all of the children. After moving to Rio Rancho and purchasing a house there, she united with the Sandia BIC Church, where she and Lloyd have faithfully served until the present.
