ALVAREZ -- George T. Alvarez, 83, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 20, 2008. George served in the first division Marine Corps during WWII as a scout and sniper. Upon return to Albuquerque, he became an auto body technician. He retired from Harold's Body Repair with previous work history at Galles Cadillac, Frontier Ford, and Ed Black Chevrolet. George's skills were endless; he loved fishing and drawing as his hobbies. He is survived by his loving wife, Virginia Clifton-Alvarez; two sons, George A. Alvarez and wife, Debra, and Victor Alvarez; two sisters, Marcella Lopez and husband, John, and Pauline Villa and husband, Al; five step-children, Peter Klein, Venessa Klein-Doner, Brad, Mike and Jeff Clifton; and many grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends he met through the years; and his puppies. BACA -- Esau Baca, 75, of Albuquerque, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2008. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Mary; four children, Debi Lopez, James Baca, Robert Baca, and Gina Baca, all of Albuquerque; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother; Seferino Baca of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Amalia Baca; a sister, Mary Lou Brown; and a brother, Julian Baca. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. BENEDICK -- Marie Jacqueline Benedick, 81, longtime resident of Albuquerque, ended her courageous battle with ovarian cancer Tuesday, January 22, 2008 in the comfort of her home. She is survived by her children, Lisa Benedick, Bernard Benedick, Steve Benedick and wife, Maureen, and Mary Calderwood; grandchildren, Nicholas Armstrong, Krisha Chavez, Alexandre Staehlin, Eric Benedick, and Mariah Benedick; great-grandchildren, Denise Chavez, Mekala Chavez; brother, Basil Denissoff and wife, Ilona; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Benedick; her sister, Sister Renata, OBS. Marie Jacqueline was a woman with incredible strength and spirit with an endearing love for family and friends. She attained the level of Life Grand Master in Bridge. As Lady Commander of the Knights of Jerusalem, she was very involved and passionate with providing assistance to overseas orphanages. She was very involved in both the Byzantine and Roman Catholic Rites all of her life and deeply honored that her family was instrumental in the development of the Monastic Community in Pecos, NM. She also served devotedly with various Catholic communities in the east mountain area for over 10 years. A Prayer Service will be held in Marie Jacqueline's honor Monday, January 28, 2008, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel. CURRY -- Warren H. Curry, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, died unexpectedly of a stroke on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Warren was born in Rochester, New York, on January 13, 1924 to Harvey and Mildred Curry. He received a Master's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Michigan where he met Anita. In 1951, they relocated to Albuquerque where Warren was employed with Sandia Labs until his retirement in 1986. After retirement, he pursued his love of sailing, skiing and travel with family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife Anita of 61 years; children Susan, Laurel, Cheryl and Allyson and their families. In accordance with Warren's wishes, he will be cremated and his family will observe a private memorial ceremony. DAVIS -- Robert L. "Bob" Davis, 69, longtime resident of Albuquerque, went home to be with God, Thursday, January 24, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Becky of 29 wonderful years; daughters, Diana Maloof and husband, Paul, and Lucille Brasher and husband, Joe, Brandy S. Lopez; sons, Scott Davis, Mike Davis and wife, Tammy, and John Davis; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; treasured sister-in-laws, Margaret DeVolk and husband, Gerald, Pauline Perea, and Frances Griego and husband, Joseph; brothers-in-laws, Pat Chavez, Jr. and wife, Rita, Joe Chavez and wife, Barbara, and Wilfred Chavez and wife, Maria; many great and loving nieces and nephews; and his Route 66 Optimist family where he was a life member. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sophie and Kelly Davis. Bob retired from the U.S. Air Force and General Electric before he spent his remaining years doing wonderful wooden crafts such as toys for children at the UNMH Cancer Center; he was also a professional clown performing magic as Jessie the Jester/Sir Humphrey the Hobo. Robert, also known as "Poppie," was a great cook and loved bowling with his wife, which is how they met. FLOWERS -- John "Johnny" Flowers, 77, of Peralta, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2008 after a short illness. He was born February 15, 1930 in Hickman County, TN to John and Malinda Flowers. John was a resident of Albuquerque from 1958 until he moved to Peralta in 1997. He was self-employed most of his life. Among his many businesses he had his own automotive on North Edith during which time his boys would wash parts and learned the trade. Among his many accomplishments he moved houses, he was a general contractor for Sandia Labs for 18 1/2 years; John built many houses in Albuquerque's North Valley and also in Peralta. He owned and operated A & L's Country Kitchen in Bosque Farms and built and operated J & L's Country Kitchen until he became ill. He enjoyed buying and selling real estate for years. John loved and enjoyed his family and was there when they needed help or advice. John enjoyed his classic cars, hunting, fishing, taking care of his cows, but his most favorite past time was just talking to friends and family. He is survived by his wife of 37 1/2 years, Lesyle Flowers; his children, Robert Flowers and wife, Dolly of Albuquerque, Janice Lusk and husband, George of Albuquerque, Jerrel Flowers and wife, Linda of Tome, NM, Ricky Flowers and wife, Lisa, "adopted son", Dale Mercer, all of Peralta, Carla Corrales and husband, Joe of Albuquerque, Michael Flowers of Albuquerque, Michelle Strickland and husband, Brett of Peralta; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ann Farmer of Nashville, TN; sister-in-law, Allene Wade of Centerville, TN; sister-in-law, Marguarite Flowers of Hohenwald, TN; many nieces, nephews and friends. GAMBLE -- Gregory Gamble, Specialist, a passionate member of the NM National Guard, found peace in his world January 21, 2008. HODGES -- FRANK HENRY Mr. Frank Henry Hodges, 84, a resident of Los Lunas, NM passed away on January 25, 2008. Mr. Hodges is survived by his daughters, Paula L. LAMBERT -- John Lambert, age 57, a resident of Bernalillo, passed away on January 22, 2008 after a brave battle with cancer. He was born in Seattle, WA on January 22, 1951 and moved to Bernalillo in 1997. He was the single father to his beloved daughter, Elizabeth, age 18, and a grandfather to Anastacia, age 8 months. John leaves behind many friends and lots of precious memories. LYCZKOWSKI -- Kenneth Lyczkowski, 47, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, NM, born in Cleveland, OH passed away peacefully, in his sleep Sunday, January 20, 2008. Ken was affectionately known as "Ski." He loved his adopted home of NM. He enjoyed entertaining friends and family at his weekend barbeques, he was a sports enthusiast and a dedicated lifelong Cowboys fan and Ohio State Buckeyes fan. He will be truly missed by all the lives he touched with his infectious laughter and his unique sense of humor. He was a loving husband, son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. Ken is survived by his wife, Terese; his mother, Josephine Lyczkowski; brother, Robert and sister-in-law, Susie; sisters, Diane Pascarella and brother-in-law, Dennis, Barbara Trykowski and brother-in-law, Mark and Nancy Nodelman and brother-in-law, Seth; mother and father-in-law, Horacio and Sandra Lopez of Puerto De Luna, NM where Ken spent a lot of time; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Denise and Leonard Salgado, Kathryn and Craig Hyatt, Angela and Adrian Duran; along with all of Ken's nieces and nephews, Joseph, Amanda, Christan, Lori, Matthew, Kelley, Alyse, Ryan, Nicolas and Blair. Ken's family, his numerous friends from NM, TX, AZ, NJ, CA, and Canada as well as his loyal canine companions, Kendall and Jillian, will never forget him. SPENCER -- Lewis Vernon Spencer went home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. He will be missed by his family and friends. He was born to Lewis Henry and Annie (Sewell) Spencer on August 31, 1917. He was born in the Estancia Valley. His father, Lewis, was so excited he had a boy after four daughters that he announced "The King of the Valley is born". He helped his father on the farm. He married Dorothy Brown in 1935, and to this union was one son, Walter Spencer, three daughters, Shirley, Margaret and Irene Spencer. Dorothy died in 1940. On May 24, 1942, he married Lucille Timmons. To this Union, was born one more son, Don Spencer, two daughters, Janet Nelle and Karen Spencer. After a fifteen year drought on the farm, he moved the family to Albuquerque in 1951. Vern worked at ICX Trucking Company for nearly 30 years before he retired in 1982. He was a racing enthusiast, and raced at the old Speedway Park. He loved watching NASCAR racing on TV. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Margaret Spencer, Mamie (Spencer) Maxwell, Willie (Spencer) Miller, and Lona (Spencer) Kellogg; two nephews, Miller Maxwell and Gene Miller; two nieces, Willie Mae (Maxwell) Maiden and Patsy (Miller) Rawson; three daughters, Shirley Spencer, Janet Nelle Spencer and Margaret (Spencer) DeMoss. He is survived by his wife of over 65 years, Lucille Timmons Spencer; two sons, Walter Spencer and wife, Dot of Moriarty and Don Spencer and wife, Adele of Plano, TX; two daughters, Irene Spencer Thein of Issaquah, WA and Karen Spencer of Albuquerque; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren; many cousins and friends. STEWART -- Thomas N. Stewart, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1967, died January 17, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, K.B. (Kathryn) Stewart, and their daughter, Kate S. Warder. He is survived by his son, Thomas B. Stewart, wife, Jean, and grandchildren, Kara and Ben, of Littleton, CO; and by his grandson, Robert Warder, Jr., wife, Tacy, and great-granddaughter, Annika, of Albuquerque. He graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1941, and served in the Regular Army for over 30 years, retiring in January 1972 in the grade of Colonel. His overseas assignments included the Philippine Islands, Japan, Austria, Turkey, and the Sudan. Following his retirement, he earned his Master's Degree from UNM and taught Industrial Arts at Madison and Eisenhower Middle Schools in Albuquerque from 1975 to 1985. A Memorial Service will be held in Carter Hall at the La Vida Llena Retirement Community, 10501 Lagrima de Oro NE at 2 p.m. on February 23, 2008. VELARDE -- Anita Maria Velarde, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, left on her journey Home to the Lord on January 24, 2008. Anita, known as Annie, was born on December 16, 1918. She is joining her husband, Alex Velarde and other family who left before her. Annie is survived by her daughters, Marcie McClaflin and husband, George, Alice Rodriguez and husband, Paul; and her sons, David Velarde and wife, Lorraine, Arthur Velarde and wife, Mary, Samuel Velarde and wife, Melva, and Albert Velarde; and also by her ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Annie was a devout Catholic and was a member of the Queen of Heaven Parish. She touched the lives of all who knew her and will be greatly missed. A Mass will be held on Monday, January, 28, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at the Queen of Heaven Parish, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE, followed by a procession to the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The pallbearers are Arthur Velarde, Samuel Velarde, Adam Velarde, Kimberly Velarde, Marcos Gutierrez, and Albert Velarde. Honorary pallbearers are Annie's grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Annie's family would like to thank the staff of the Ladera Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their dedication and professionalism. WELLS -- Jackie Wells (Lawton) died at 2:20 p.m. on January 23, 2008, at her home in Albuquerque, surrounded by family and close friends. Jackie is survived by her devoted and loving husband, her true love, Dan; her daughters, Courtney Lawton and her partner, Kathie Dejea, of Albuquerque, and Kellen Lignier, of Morey St. Denis, France; her grandchildren, Lucie and Auguste Lignier and Henry, Joseph, and Abigail Bettinger; her brother, Murray Keeler and his wife, Judy of Animas, New Mexico; her sister, Madeleine Frossard and her husband, Ted of Dallas, Texas; and her beloved nieces and nephews, Shelly, April, Anna, Brandy, Amanda, Cindy, Whitney, Beau, Randy, and Erin. Jackie was born on May 19, 1944, the daughter of Hugh and Beth Keeler, in El Paso, Texas. She graduated from Burgess High School, and later from Hotel-Dieu Nursing School. In 1976, she moved with her daughters to Albuquerque and established her career as an accomplished nurse. She worked for over 20 years at University of New Mexico Hospital, first as an operating-room nurse, then as a plastic surgery specialty nurse, then in the trauma-surgical intensive care unit, and finally in hospice. Jackie was an accomplished artist and gardener, and surrounded herself with wonderful craftspeople and visionaries. She loved traveling, and especially enjoyed South and Central America and France. She was conversant in Spanish and French. A strong woman, she raised her daughters to be strong, self-assured women, too, and she loved Coco and Kellen fiercely. She succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, and had bitterly mourned the loss of her arms and legs because she was no longer able to do what she so enjoyed: traveling, gardening, and creating art.
