BARNHILL -- Thomas Everett Barnhill, 17, a resident of Edgewood, NM passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2006 at the University of New Mexico Hospital. Thomas was born on April 15, 1989 to Curtis and Isabel Barnhill in Albuquerque. He has been a resident of Edgewood since he was two years old. Thomas loved to hang around with his buddies, skateboard, play the drums and guitar. Thomas was a proud member of the Moriarty Varsity Basketball team. He was an excellent artist that loved to sketch. Thomas' favorite teams are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Dallas Cowboys. His father proudly stated that Thomas was a very responsible child who always got his chores done and was very helpful to the family. Prior to his illness, Thomas was employed by Smith's Grocery Store. Thomas is survived by his parents, Curtis and Isabel Barnhill of Edgewood; and Marian DeLong of New York, NY; his brothers, Curtis, Jared and Jon; his sister, Rhonda; his grandparents, Toni Villanueva and Maria and Guadalupe Marquez; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and his best friends, Alyssa Pena and James Rochelle, and many other friends who loved him very much. A visitation and Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2006 from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Daniels Family Funeral Services. The Rosary will be recited on Sunday, November 19, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 85 Highway 344 in Edgewood, NM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, November 20, 2006 at St Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Thomas will be laid to rest at Mountain Valley Cemetery, also, in Edgewood. CHANEY -- Bertha H. Chaney was born in Shreveport, LA, January 27, 1918. Her mother, who died in childbirth, was a member of the family-owned Mighty Haag Circus. She was raised by her paternal grandmother in Perkins, OK until she died when Bertha was 5. Bertha was then taken in and raised by her paternal aunt and her family. She was a bright, beautiful girl who attended Christian College in Columbia, MO. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Oklahoma where she was President of the Tri-Delt sorority. She married her husband, John Chaney in 1941. They later moved from Oklahoma to Illinois where John was an administrator at the University of Illinois. Bertha taught Sunday school at the Methodist church in Urbana, IL and raised her beloved son and only child, John, Jr. She was a devoted wife of a fisherman and golfer, a wonderful mother, and a tireless community and church volunteer. She was always happiest when she was helping others. After her son left home, she and her husband moved to Boulder, CO where she became co-owner of the Charles Eagle Plume Indian art store, near Estes Park, CO. She was passionate about art, jewelry, and fashion. Her sense of humor was contagious and all around her enjoyed her free spirit and sense of adventure. Later in life she traveled with her son John, and daughter in law, Barbara and her grandchildren, Kari and Josh Chaney to Central America several times and with her friends to Italy. During retirement, she and her husband shared their time between their homes in Albuquerque and Scottsdale, AZ. Nothing meant more to her than her family and her friends. She passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2006. Bertha is survived by her loving husband, John; and her beloved son, John Jr. and his wife, Barbara; her beloved granddaughter, Kari Chaney Edenfield and husband, Thomas; and her beloved grandson, Joshua Chaney. She also leaves behind her precious dog, Schotzee; and many devoted friends, relatives, and neighbors. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her, but we know her spirit will always be with us. COLE -- Harriett Sass Cole, age 84, died peacefully in her home in Albuquerque on November 8, 2006. She came from Chicago to Los Alamos in 1945 with her husband, Edward J. Sass. They were both employed by the Los Alamos Labs until retirement. Harriett is survived by three sisters; her former husband, Theodore R. Cole; three daughters: Patricia and Carol Sass and Marie Trujillo; three grandchildren: Marc Trujillo, Michael Usner and Molly Losh; as well as a great-grandaughter, Ava Usner. She had a lively interest in arts, crafts, volunteerism, gardening, and her pets. She will be loved and missed more than words can say. Burial will be in a private ceremony at Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos, NM. Her request, in lieu of flowers, is that donations be made to the local Animal Humane Society.

GARTON -- Frederick Eft Garton, 70, of McIntosh, NM, passed away on Monday, November 13, 2006 in Ixtapa, Guerrero Mexico. Frederick was born on May 3, 1936 in Elmer, NJ to Harold and Katherine (Tierney) Garton. He was a member of the AQHA and has been a resident of McIntosh, NM since 1986. After graduating from Putger's with a BS in Ag science Fred met the love of his life in 1961 at a children's camp in the Pocanoes. He graduated in 1962 from the University of Penn, school of Vet med. In 1976 they moved to Roswell, NM. There he began the second love of his live, raising horses. The family moved to McIntosh in 1986 and continued his veterinary practice. In recent years he continued to raise horses and in his retirement he enjoyed traveling. He was extremely proud of his four sons, adored his grandchildren and daughters-in-law, and worshipped his wife. He was preceded in death by his parents. Frederick is survived by his wife, Ann Garton of their home in McIntosh, NM; sons, John and his wife, Kyra Garton of Edgewood, NM; Robert and his wife, Amy Garton of Moriarty, NM; Daniel and his wife, Rachael Garton of Moriarty, NM; Bryan and his wife, Young Garton of Lakenheath, England; sisters, Katherine Crotty, Mary Wharton; and five grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Service held Monday, November 20, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary Chapel in Moriarty, NM David Wester will be officiating. GRIEGO -- Leonides (Nilo) Griego, born January 9, 1933, passed away November 15, 2006. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Elisa Griego; brother, Johnny; and son, Johnny. He is survived by his wife, Carmelita Griego; three sons, Jerome and wife, Dalia, Robert Sr. and wife, Mary Ann, Eric and girlfriend, Lorenza; granddaughters, Juanita, Danielle, and Andera; grandsons, Robert Jr. and Brandon; great-grandson, Aiden, and one on the way; brother, Romeo; six sisters, Madalena, Angie, Erlinda, Genieve, Adela, and Sandra; three aunts; two uncles; and several nephews, nieces, other family and friends who loved and will miss him. After serving in the United States Air Force, he married on May 18, 1957 and raised his family in the Albuquerque Rio Grande Valley. HOLT -- Marshall Henry Holt - a man of humor, style and grace, a true free spirit. Marshall was originally from Virginia Beach, VA and has left behind his sisters, Phyllis Phillips and family and Lenora Adylett and family. He will be missed daily by his loving wife, Bess; his parrot, Largo; and numerous friends from all over the country. He will be greatly missed by his Albuquerque family, Chris, Sandy, Hannah, and Shellby Robberts. Marshall was hero, mentor, best friend, and riding buddy to Chris and godfather to Hannah and Shellby. Marshall was a caring, thoughtful person and a wonderful husband with a huge heart. He was mentor, student of life, a wonderful listener and always in pursuance of good times with his many friends. He loved riding his motorcycle with Chris, especially in Durango, CO and the Sandias. He was generous with his time and knowledge, an "old soul" with sage wisdom. He had a knack of making the best out of any situation and injected humor whenever possible. KVANVIK -- George Kvanvik, 77, a resident of Albuquerque, died November 16, 2006 after a long illness. He was born August 21, 1929 in Norway. George left behind a place in our hearts that cannot be filled; life as we know can never be the same without him. Everyone who knew him dearly loved him. George was a proud American who retired as a carpenter with 25 years in the Carpenters Union. He also was a lifetime member of the American Legion. LAMAR -- HENRY C. JR. Lt. Col Henry C. Lamar Jr., 84, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away November 14, 2006 at his home with longtime friend and companion, Caroline Ferryman at this side. He is survived by his son, David Lamar and wife, Karen; grandchildren, Kirby and Carson of Littleton, CO; and his beloved dachshund Angel. Mr. Lamar was born August 12, 1922 in Rosebud, TX, the son of Opal and Henry C. Lamar Sr. After graduating from High School he attended Texas A&M College where he earned his degree in Agriculture. He was a veteran pilot of the U.S. Army 9th Armoured Division during WWII in Europe and later served in Korea. He was integral in the introduction and use of the M.A.S.H. helicopter program in Korea. Mr. Lamar retired from the Army with many honors and decorations in 1965. Graveside Services and interment will take place at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO.

LIOT -- James "Jim" Liot, age 53, a resident of Los Lunas, NM, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2006. He taught special education at Los Lunas High School for three years and before that he worked for Ethicon Endo Surgery in Albuquerque for 21 years as a shipping and receiving department supervisor. He attended First United Methodist Church and had strong faith in Christ. Jim was a family man and enjoyed sit-down dinners and spending time with his daughter and family. He was and avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and exploring. He liked to tell stories of his adventurous life experiences. Jim had a great sense of humor and liked to catch people off guard with his witty humor. He was a forgiving, thoughtful and generous man who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Ferdinand Liot. He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Ramona Liot of Belen; daughter, Maria Liot of Los Lunas; step-son, Eric Sanchez of Los Lunas; mother, Beth Kramer of Belen; childhood friend, James Davey of Albuquerque; and close friend, Andrew Burris of Los Lunas. MURPHY -- Thomas L. Murphy, 74, passed away peacefully at his Albuquerque, NM home on Monday, November 13, 2006. He was born on August 23, 1932 in Corsicana, TX and lived most of his life in Texas and New Mexico. Tom graduated from Whitesboro High School in Whitesboro, TX in 1950, where he was an outstanding athlete: starting halfback for the football team and a starting player on the basketball team. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the age of 17 and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving twenty-seven months in Japan, after which he was stationed at Continental Divide, NM. During his 20 year career in the Air Force, he was also stationed at Kirtland AFB in NM, where he met and married Mary Lucille Hegarty on December 26, 1957; Richards-Gebaur AFB in Missouri; Chatham AFB in New Brunswick, Canada; and Perrin AFB in Denison, TX. Following his retirement from the Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1971, he received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He began his teaching career in 1973 at Tohatchi Elementary School in Tohatchi, NM, on the Navajo Nation. He also taught at Aileen Roat and Stagecoach Elementary Schools in Gallup, NM. Following his retirement from the Gallup-McKinley County Schools, he moved to Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary; their children and spouses, Colleen and Bill Tarket, John and Vicki Murphy, Thomas and Melinda Murphy, Jennifer and Brian Murphy-Dye, Teresa and Ron Dyer, Vincent and Laurajean Murphy, and Rosalie and Terry Bergamo; 20 grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.E. McFatridge of Whitesboro, TX; his first wife, Genevie Imboden of Gallup, NM; and his son, Stephen. When Tom wed Mary, he confided his wish to have 10 children but had to be content with 8! He was involved in Scouts and Little League, and taught his sons and daughters to fish, bicycle, roller-skate, and ice-skate, skating circles backwards around them until he broke his ankle showing off at the rink. He was a neighborly guy who enjoyed telling stories of his life in the Air Force and could fix anything. Cleo, his Springer Spaniel, brought him great joy. In his later years, he fed the hummingbirds that visited his yard, and honed his computer skills in order to better research his family roots. He had hoped to make it to his 50-year anniversary with Mary, was proud of all of his children, and derived great joy from his grandchildren. OLGUIN -- Vicente Olguin, age 79, a life-long resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2006. He was an usher for Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, an avid member of the Knights of Columbus attending meetings, conventions and serving a two and a half year term as Grand Knight. Vicente was also a board member of the Belen Railroad Credit Union. He started working for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1946 and retiring after 45 years of dedicated service. He was an avid walker, walking three miles a day. Vicente also enjoyed fishing and liked doing word search cross word puzzles. Vicente was a quiet person, but a wonderful grandfather, as he would pick-up his grandchildren after school so they wouldn't have to walk in the cold or stand in the rain. He was also very proud of his grandson, Staff Sergeant Marcus Gurule, proudly serving his country in the United States Army Infantry, having served two deployments, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq. Vicente was preceded in death by his parents, Fernandez and Doloritas Olguin; and sisters, Annie McGuiness, Octavia Garcia, Albieta Benavidez, Mary Nigg, Nila Ulibarri, and Polly Budagher. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Elsie S. Olguin; son, Vincent Olguin and his wife, Sharon; daughters, Dolores Espinosa and her husband, Willie, Marilyn Gurule and her husband, Joe and Elsie Prevot and her husband, Leon; grandchildren, William, Michael, Karen, Anjeanette, Fernandez, Reina, Lauren, Eloisa, Matthew, Marcus, Andrea, Roman and Kaitlynn; great-grandchildren, William, Mareena, Joseph, Anthony, Jacob, Angel, Naviticus, Isaiah and Noah; sisters, Romana Baca, Gertude Locey, Carmen Jaramillo and Emily Aragon; and mother-in-law, Fidelina Sanchez. PEREA -- CHRISTINA HODGE SSG Christina Hodge-Perea U.S. Army "our beloved Tina" was called home to rest with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 16, 2006 after a courageous fight with Leukemia. Tina was a wonderful MOM, a loving wife, daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, auntie, and friend. She is survived by her husband and lifetime love, Ramon; two precious children, Calicia and Demetrio; her mom, Arlita "Pat" Black and Dad Lonnie Hodge; loving and devoted grandmother, Mrs. Ruby Hooker; grandfathers, Tommie D Hooker and Floyd Gathright; three sisters, Lenae Hodge-Casias and husband, Warren, Sheryl Lynn Hodge and Erica Womack; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and numerous friends. She was a graduate of West Mesa High School where she excelled in track winning the 400 meter in state record time and going undefeated her senior year. She attended the University of New Mexico on an athletic/track scholarship. Tina served her country in the U.S. Army as a LPN and most recently as a RN. ROSE -- Wesley Zane Rose passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2006. He is survived by his son, Jason; daughter, Tracy; and granddaughter, Ashley. He is also survived by his father, Mark Rose; his sister, Lanie, her husband, Bill Sparks and their son, Marc. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia. Wes was a long-haul trucker for over 20 years and was an avid NASCAR fan. He was greatly loved and will be missed by his family and the members of the Paul family. ROSS -- Margaret Helen Ross, went to be with her Lord on November 16, 2006. Margaret was born March 22, 1926 to James and Myrtle McCreight in Paris, TX. Margaret was a resident of Albuquerque for many years. Her interests varied from BINGO to crocheting and knitting, and she was also an avid gardener. Margaret is survived by her son, Bobby Ray Thompson of Albuquerque, NM; two grandsons, Barry Ray and Brandon Lee Thompson of Albuquerque, NM; and special and loving friend, Donna Clock of Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Myrtle McCreight; her first husband, Ray Thompson; and her second husband, Charlie Ross. A Memorial Service will be Saturday, November 18, 2006, at Eastridge Wesleyan Church, 12417 Constitution Ave. NE at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Jim Turner will be officiating the service. RUSSELL -- Sydney Loyd Russell, mother of three, and "Mom" to countless others, passed away early Wednesday, November 15, 2006. She was 79. Sydney was born on April 23, 1927 in Greenville, SC, to Georg Johnson and Paula Kitchel. She married Patrick W. Loyd in August 1953 and they lived primarily in Albuquerque ever since. Following Patrick's death in 1984, Sydney married Dominic W. Russell in 1988. Sydney graduated from Radford College in Virginia with a BA in music education. She worked and volunteered throughout her life performing solo piano, singing with and directing choral groups. Sydney was known in the community as a tirelessly optimistic and energetic volunteer. With her husband, Dominic Russell, Sydney was recognized by Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church for her support to the Doves Education, Marriage Counseling and Grief Support Program. Sydney was also active with Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Sigma Alpha Iota Assistance League, and the American Association of University Women. Most recently, Sydney was a dedicated member of "The Enchanters" choral group, a labor of love she cherished up until her recent illness. SECOR -- Hazel Secor, a resident of Rio Rancho, quietly passed away November 13, 2006 surrounded by her family. The eldest child of Mernie and Elizabeth Brown, she was raised and educated in Michigan. She graduated from Alma College and received a Masters of Education from the University of Michigan. An active church member, she served on the alter guild for many years and volunteered weekly with the youth group. Hazel gave tirelessly of her time as a former Girl Scout leader, library volunteer, Band Mom and active member of the St. Joseph's West Mesa auxiliary for over 17 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Harvey E. Secor; her parents; one sister, Marilyn; and two brothers, Frederick and William. Hazel leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Dawn Jaramillo, Midland, TX; son, Harvey Secor and wife, Kathy Franchini, Albuquerque, NM; and five beloved grandchildren, Mario, Joshua, Devin, Allie, and Giovanna. one uncle, Nelson Abernethy of Michigan; one brother, Thomas Brown and wife, Bonnie, Troy, MI; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. STEELE -- Maurice G. (Gail) Steele, (United States Air Force, retired), a resident of Albuquerque for 36 years, died early Wednesday morning as a result of a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Pat; son, Robert of Albuquerque; son, Michael of Boulder, CO; daughter, Cynthia Cummings of Albuquerque; son in law, Kevin Cummings; and grandchildren, Kevin Jr. and Gracie Cummings of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan. Gail was a career Air Force man who was awarded the Silver Star in Europe during World War II. He served in two more wars and retired in 1969. He enjoyed retirement more than most people, spending most of his time with his beloved family. STROME -- Sandra Leigh Strome, 47, lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed from this life to Life Eternal, Monday, November 13, 2006. She is survived by her parents, Tom and Barbara Strome; sisters, Susan Strome and husband, William Saxon of Bloomington, IN, and Diane Gagon and husband, Kenneth of Seattle, WA; niece and nephews, Jayson and Beau Gagon, and Daniel and Sarah Saxon; aunt, Gloria Hathaway; and uncle, Richard Strome. Sandie knew the best of times and the worst of times. She received a certificate from Parks College. Among her travels, she especially enjoyed England and Scotland. Sandie was active in Wildlife Rescue, able to care for the first night hawk documented in New Mexico. She received an amateur photographer award in Washington, DC from the International Photography Society. Her hobby was making tiles. Her pet family included Shih Tzus, parrots, and cats. Sandi had many internet friends around the world. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2006, 2:00 p.m., at St. John's Cathedral, 318 Silver SW. WHITHAM -- Robert B. Whitham, 71, died on Wednesday, November 15, 2006. He is survived by his wife, Wanda L. Whitham and four children who enriched his life, David Whitham and his wife, Elizabeth and their son, Teo of Edgewood, Nancy Whitham of Portland, OR, Judith Hubbard and her husband, Manuel Ontiveros of Albuquerque, David Hubard and companion, Stephanie Weaver of Tijeras; sisters, Dorothy Lovering, and Marilyn Hall; brothers, Hugh Whitham, and wife, Barbara, and Richard Whitham, all who live in Vermont. Robert was born in South Royalton, VT on April 24, 1935. He was known to his friends and family as Bob. In the mid-1950s, he was stationed at Sandia Base for one and a half years. He graduated from Bentley College of Accounting and Finance (Boston) and received BSBA and a Master of Arts degree from Suffolk University (Boston). After moving back to Albuquerque in 1962, he received Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of New Mexico. Robert was a university professor for 15 years. He received his Certified Public Accountant certificate in 1964 and had a CPA practice for a number of years. Robert was also a manager of internal audits for the City of Albuquerque for 12 years. His articles on education, accounting, internal auditing and internal audit reports were published in professional publications. In 1990 as a hobby he began freelance writing and photography. His articles and photographs were published in New Mexico magazine, Runner's World, in-flight magazines, and many other regional and national publications. Known throughout his life for his sense of humor, in the 1980s he performed 100 nights a year for five years as a standup comic in venues from New Mexico to New York City. He was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club of Albuquerque, American Institute of CPA's, New Mexico Society of CPA's, South West Writers and Enchanted Lens Camera Club.
