AVILA -- Andrew James (Jim) Avila died of heart failure on Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at the age of 45. A well-known rock musician, Jim played a mesmerizing lead guitar and sang a powerful, sweet lead in numerous local bands, most recently Trauma Unit. He organized musical benefits for the "Make A Wish" foundation and composed many songs. His talent and generosity were saluted on the radio station 94 Rock in an all-day tribute on July 22. Jim graduated from Sandia High School, Class of '76, and earned his associate degree in electronics from T-VI. He went on to become an electrical engineer. He worked at Siemen's in Albuquerque and later founded Modular Solutions, Inc. a company that designs robotic lighting. His line of lighting is manufactured in Florida, and both Universal Studios and Epcot Center use his lights. He also worked on various private and governmental robotic projects. Jim is survived by his wife, Judy Schiess Avila; by his daughter, Krystal Avila; his mother, Adelina Sanchez Avila; his sister, Luisa Ramirez; his brother, David Avila; nephews Gerald Parras, Jeffrey Avila and Christopher Avila; nieces Char Parras Schneringer and Kyndra Parras Vigil; his dogs, Blue and Red; and countless friends. A mass will be held on Tuesday, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of the Risen Savior, 7701 Wyoming NE. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 31, at the New Life Presbyterian Church, 5540 Eubank NE (north of Spain) at 2:00 p.m. Please make contributions to "Make A Wish" foundation in lieu of flowers. BAREFOOT -- Dr. Curtis Anthony "Tony" Barefoot, 53, a resident of Albuquerque since 1976, died Friday, July 23, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Olga T. Barefoot of Albuquerque; son, Ivan and wife, Gisela of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Isaac and Maximiliano; sister, Valarie Peterson of Orangevale, CA; nephew, Frank Peterson; niece, Veronique Peterson; aunts, Sylvia Whyte and Mae Manning; uncle, Osbourne James; cousins, Alanna Capps, Shawn Redding, Annette Taylor, Sheila Mogliazzi, Sabrina Owens, Tselane Dean, Rashima McKelvin, and Andrew Redding; Aunt Rosa, Jennie, and Curly Lucas of Baltimore; close friend, Ramon Acosta; and numerous other family and friends. Tony was born in Baltimore, MD and graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 1968. He graduated with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1972 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA. Tony also graduated from John Hopkins University with a Masters Degree in Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. in Math from UNM in 1980. After receiving his Ph.D., he went to work for Sandia National Labs before taking a professorship at UNM. Tony then went to University of Colorado Denver and then taught at New Mexico Tech in Socorro for 18 years. Math was his first love and passion. He loved to play classical guitar. He was very kind, loving, and caring. He was a beloved husband, dad, grandpa, brother, nephew, cousin, uncle, and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. BASS -- William "Bill" L. Bass, 67, of Willard, NM, peacefully left this life Tuesday night July 20, 2004. He was born in Estancia, NM on April 17, 1937 to Bill and Vera Bass. He graduated from Estancia High School and received his BS. from UNM and MS from N.M. Tech. He served in the Air Force and went on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He also taught Junior and Senior High School Math and Sciences in many New Mexico and Arizona communities. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Dorothy Bass; his children and grandchildren, David McCully and wife, Pearl and son, Evan of Milan, NM, Katherine McCully of Albuquerque and Jennifer Spinler and husband, Pat and daughters, Natasha and Rachel of Kasson, Minnesota; his sisters, Jane Powers of McIntosh, NM, Sylvia Levy and husband, Phil of Estancia and Ruth Moon and husband, Tony of Sandy, Utah; plus many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Services were will be Saturday, July 24, 2004 at the Estancia Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1466 Highway 41, Estancia, NM. BECTHEL -- Mrs. Peggy J. Bechtel, 70, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on July 13, 2004. Mrs. Bechtel is survived by her beloved husband of forty-two years, Wilson Bechtel; two sons, Terry Bechtel and wife, Rebecca of Seattle, WA, Charles Stoy and wife, Dr. Deneen Crandell of Canon City, CO; her daughter, Katherine Bechtel; her brother, Duane Carpenter of Alba, OK; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Monte Vista Christian Church on Monday August 2, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. Burial of cremains at the Santa Fe National Cemetery took place on July 19, 2004. CUELLAR -- Ralph H. Cuellar, age 82, a resident of Albuquerque for 72 years, died on Wednesday July 21, 2004. Mr. Cuellar was a veteran of World War II, a member of the American Legion Post # 72, and a member of DAV Post # 3. He retired from Borden?s Dairy. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Y. Cuellar; two daughters, Rosemary Maldonado and her husband, Tony, and Susan Chavez, all of Albuquerque; one brother, Manuel Cuellar, of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren, Anthony Maldonado, Kim Maldonado-Morrell, and Crystal Vinsant. A Rosary will be recited on Sunday, July 25, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. in our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 1860 Griegos Rd. NW. CULVER -- John Edmond "Jack" Culver passed away July 20, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. Mr. Culver and his twin brother, Joe, were born November 16, 1918, to Lenard and Laura Putnam Culver in Pierre, SD. He graduated from Dallas South Dakota High School, and from the Merchant Marine School of Engineering in San Francisco. John and his brother Joe worked at CCC Camp in Hot Springs, SD for 2 years, and he also served as a Merchant Marine engineer during World War II. John Culver married June Young, also a twin, in 1940 and she predeceased him on March 25, 1961. His brother Joe passed away in 1972. He lived and worked in Council Bluffs, IA, and Denver, CO before moving to Albuquerque in 1949, where he worked as Chief Stationary Engineer at Creamland Dairies for 34 years. Mr. Culver married Jean Medlin, also a Creamland employee, on January 3, 1962 and they lived in Cedar Crest and Sandia Park in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque for 20 years. They moved to Carlsbad in 1992, where he was a volunteer at Lakeview Christian Home for several years. John Culver is survived by his wif,e Jean, of the home in Carlsbad; a son, Jerry J. Culver of Sparks, NV; a sister, Evelyn Donovan of O'Fallon, IL; a brother, Robert A. Culver of Lynnwood, WA; a brother, Tom Culver of Hollywood, CA; two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Mr. Culver was a member of the Church of Christ, and had served as a Boy Scout Master. He enjoyed watching sports events and news on television, also travel, nature, and music programs. John enjoyed going for walks with their two Old English Sheepdogs, Mona and Rainbow. DOW -- Arthur "Honey" Dow, 76, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died on July 20, 2004. FONTECCHIO -- Paul P. Fontecchio, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at the age of 79. Paul graduated from Canon City High School and the University of Denver. He served in the Navy during World War II and later succeeded in his career as a CPA/Comptroller with Plains Electric Company. Paul is survived by his loving companion of 21 years, Marie T. Gozard of Albuquerque, NM; his former wife, Dixie Layne Fontecchio of Centennial, CO; and by their two loving daughters, Donnanne Epstein and her husband, Mark, of Moss Beach, CA, and Jaynee Fontecchio-Spradling and her husband, Greg, of Durango, CO. Paul also leaves behind four grandchildren, Dawn Allysa Hooker and her husband, David Zrebiec, of Las Vegas, NV, Bryan Hooker and his wife, Melody, of Alexandria, VA, Dyann Weingardt and her husband, Kirk, of Albuquerque, NM and Samuel Paul Epstein of Moss Beach, CA. MAIN -- Lyle Harding Main, 83, passed away in a local hospital at 12:31 p.m. on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, surrounded by his beloved family. Lyle is survived by his son, Robert Main; daughter, Beverley Main Delgado, her fiancee, Ronald A. Chavez and their son, Nicholas Alan Chavez; granddaughter, Danielle Delgado; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois and Helen of New York and Dortha of California; and nephew, Ernie Lange of Albuquerque. Lyle spent twenty-four years in the Air Force and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He retired as a Master Sergeant and spent the next seventeen years working for the Civil Service at Kirkland Air Force Base. PRICE -- Carroll C. Price 82, passed away at home on July 20, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janice. He has two daughters, Carolyn Hungate and husband, Bill Hungate, and Carla Thompson and husband, Gary Thompson; four grandchildren, Tracy (Hungate) Grant and husband, Damon Grant, Todd Hungate, Brett Thompson, Eric Thompson; and three great-grandchildren, Ambriana Hungate, Payton Hungate, and Haylee Grant, all residents of Albuquerque. Carroll was born and raised in Chillocothe, OH. He served in the Army in World War II. He was a brick mason and received his training at Ohio State University. He and his family moved to Albuquerque in 1952. He was employed for 30 years at the University of New Mexico until he retired in 1989. He enjoyed his retirement; he loved roller skating. He spent many weekends at the lake with his grandsons Brett and Eric, and son-in-law Gary, jet skiing, fishing, working in the yard, and making wind chimes - he always had a project. He was a devoted husband, father and grandpa. Private services will be held.

RUPE -- Dimple Lois Rupe, 76, of Albuquerque, NM passed away Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Anna Kaseman Hospital in Albuquerque. She will lie in state Monday, July 26, 2004, 12:00 Noon - 7:00 p.m. at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home in Carlsbad, NM. A gathering to celebrate Mrs. Rupe's life will be held Sunday, July 25, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at the home of Donald Rupe, 7701 American Heritage NE, Albuquerque, NM, 87109. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, in Carlsbad, with Pastor Bob Bacon officiating. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery, in Carlsbad. Denton-Funchess Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Dimple Lois Rupe was born on Friday, November 4, 1927 in Hagerman, NM to William L. and Ola Harkness Roberts. She grew up in Carlsbad and attended local schools. On December 27, 1945 she married Jack Rupe in Carlsbad. From 1961 to 1982 she was a resident of Albuquerque. She had worked as a claims representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield for ten years before retiring. In 1982 she returned to Carlsbad where she stayed until 2001, when she moved back to Albuquerque due to health concerns and to be closer to family. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Jack Rupe; and one granddaughter, Barbara Rockman. She is survived by: 1 son, Donald Rupe and wife, Mary of Albuquerque; 2 daughters, Patty Fleming and husband, Richard of Mansfield, NM and Kathy Rockman of Albuquerque, NM; 2 sisters, Ersa Tidwell of Carlsbad, NM and Lola Harris of San Antonio, TX; 5 grandchildren, Sean Rockman, Brian Rockman, Jeannetta Cremer, Erin Rupe, and Erik Fleming; 1 great-grandchild, Jacob Rockman.

SANDOVAL -- Ricardo Martinez Sandoval April 18, 1911 - July 15, 2004 Ricardo Martinez Sandoval passed away on July 15, 2004. He was born to Teodosio Sandoval and Flora Martinez Sandoval in Martineztown at a time when New Mexico had not yet been admitted into statehood. He had nine sisters ad brothers all of whom preceded him in death. Ricardo lived in Albuquerque until young manhood when he went to California and enjoyed a career in singing and nightclub entertaining. Later in life he settled in Seattle, Washington, and worked for many years at Boeing, Inc. before his retirement. He enjoyed music, socializing, puttering with building and mechanical projects, reading on a wide assortment of historical topics and playing bridge along with his wife of many years, Ethel Sandoval, who preceded him in death in 2003. At the end of his life, Ricardo returned to his beloved Albuquerque where he regaled his nieces and nephews about the look of the city eight decades ago and the joys of growing up in a loving family. The joy and pleasure he had for his family continued until the end of his days. His absence will be felt by his two children, Ricky Michael Sandoval of Palmdale, CA and Donna Rae Sandoval Bennett of Redmond, OR. He leaves five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances that enjoyed his love of life, his memories and his passion for New Mexico and America. SMITH -- Carl Franklin Smith, 84, a resident of Los Lunas, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Agnes Smith of Los Lunas; daughters, Marianna Edgar and husband, Craig of Cheyenne, WY and Sylvia Smith of Los Lunas; son-in-law, Joe Furrow of Beeville, TX; grandchildren, Elizabeth Foster and husband, Jim of Los Lunas, Charlotte Blucher and husband, Tom of Beeville, TX, Heather Domanski and husband, Jude of Chicago, Shayla Andrews of Warwick, RI; step-grandchildren, Carole Goldy of Colorado Springs, CO, Mary Willoughby of Oklahoma City, OK, and Devin Edgar of Cheyenne, WY; great-grandchildren, Bryan Brown, Nicole Foster, Mycheal Foster, Betheny Foster, Corinne Bemis, and Torin Kuether. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Marie Furrow. Mr. Smith was a lifetime member of VFW in Elephant Butte, NM. He served in WWII in 1942-1945 as a sergeant with Company K, 194th Glider Infantry Armament. He received his Plumber Pipefitter Apprenticeship Certificate in 1948. Mr. Smith attended Purdue University to become a certified apprentice instructor for New Mexico. For many years he was an instructor for the Apprenticeship School in NM. He was appointed to the Mechanical Board under NM Governors, Jack Campbell through Bruce King. Mr. Smith was AFL-CIO NM State President for several terms. He was a member of and former business manager for Local 412 Plumbers and Pipefitters. David Rusk issued an executive order to proclaim October 11, 1980, Carl F. Smith Day in Albuquerque. Mr. Smith was an avid pilot and flew his first solo flight in February 1948. He loved flight and logged many hours. Mr. Smith also loved to fish with his family and to ride motorcycles. SMITH -- Mary Vera Smith, "Grandma Sugar and Aunt Mary" 88, resident of Albuquerque since 1940, died on July 21, 2004. She is survived by her son, Frank Edward Smith and wife, Carol Jean of Albuquerque; daughter, Betty Alice Goen and husband, Lynn of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, David Humble of Albuquerque, Ron Humble of Anchorage, AK, Christopher Smith and wife, Gerri, and Craig Smith and wife, Stefanie, all of Albuquerque; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard Oliver and wife, Betty of Colorado Springs, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Earl Edward Smith; and one sister, DeVona Berry. Mary was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, San Marcial Chapter 34; former Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls Chapter 20. She was also a member of Rio Grande Presbyterian Church; former president of the Women's Auxiliary of Plumbing Contractors and former National Chaplain for the Plumbing Contractors Convention. Mary owned and operated Southwest Plumbing and Heating with her husband until her retirement in 1979. She was a surrogate grandmother and aunt to many. She was part of a luncheon group known as "The Lovely Ladies." Service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at French Mortuary - Westside Chapel with Reverend Bill Ratliff, officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum. Friends and family may visit French Mortuary - Westside Chapel on Monday, July 26, 2004 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rio Grande Presbyterian Church, 600 Coors NW or to a charity of the donor's choice. TIMMONS -- James Timmons, 70, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died on July 20, 2004. He is survived by his four children, Michael E. Timmons of Albuquerque, Jerry E. Timmons and wife, Linda of Albuquerque, J. Mark Timmons and wife, Peggy of Austin, TX, and Lynda D. Heaney and husband, Henry of Lubbock, TX; father's wife, Illene Timmons of Albuquerque; ten grandchildren, Michelle, Brandon, Heather, Monica, Jason, Amy, Luanita, Christina, Steven, and Bryan; and five great-grandchildren, Megan, Aiko, Riley, Eli, and Tora; one brother, Walter Ray Timmons and wife, Gretchen of Portland, OR; sister, Betty Louise Lytle and husband, Jim of Lawrenceburg, IN; brother-in-law, Nelson Sherrill of Arlington, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; and a sister, Frances Sherrill. James was born in Vaughan, NM on September 27, 1933 to Sam and Naomi Timmons. The Timmons family migrated to New Mexico in the 1860s. In early 1940s, James's family moved to Clovis, NM where James learned to farm and went to school. James graduated from Clovis High School in 1951 and married his high school sweetheart, Barbara in 1953, and he served his country in the Army at Ft. Bliss, TX from 1953 to 1955. After he was discharged, James and Barbara moved to Albuquerque, where the family has remained. During James's long life, he worked for the railroad, in construction as a heavy equipment mechanic and welder, and has farmed in the Alameda and Corrales area. He retired from farming around 1995 and retired from Sparling Construction in 2002. James was a member of the Bosque Cuadrillas Square Dance Club, The Lobo Club, and was involved in the 4H Club, and Bernalillo County Extension Service. He was a member of Harwood United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Operating Engineers Local Union in Albuquerque. Service will take place on Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Harwood United Methodist Church, 420 San Lorenzo NW, with Pastor Chere Lyon officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.
