ARFMAN -- Col. John Frederick Arfman (US Army-Ret), 92, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2004, in his sleep of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Ann, in 1997. John was born in New York City on April 5, 1911, graduated from James Monroe High School in NYC in 1929 and went on to attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, graduating in 1933 with a degree in Civil Engineering and a commission in the U.S. Army Reserve. After working for Consolidated Edison Co. in his home town of New York City, he accepted an active duty commission in the regular Army in 1938. During the early part of World War II, he helped form and train new engineering battalions throughout the country. While stationed in Boise, Idaho in 1943, he met his wife-to-be, Elizabeth Ann "Ban" Barber, and were married in Greenville, SC, on September 23, 1943. Soon thereafter, John deployed to the Pacific theater where he spent most of his time building airfields and military bases. After the war ended, he was assigned to the Military Advisory Group in Manila, Philippine Islands where his wife joined him in 1946. It was in the Philippines where their first child, John Jr., was born in 1948. Two more sons, Richard Lee and Frederick Christopher, followed in Iowa City, IA, in 1950 and 1951, and daughters, Susan Leigh in New Orleans in 1953 and Joanne Lynn in Albuquerque in 1961. John's last assignment before retiring in 1963 was as the Chief Engineer, Albuquerque District, for the Corps of Engineers. After retiring from the Army, he worked for a private company and then for the State of New Mexico as the Chief Engineer of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District. In 1972, he retired for good. John is survived by his son, John and his wife, Peggy of Albuquerque; son, Richard, his wife, Kim and daughters, Katie and Maggie of Augusta, GA; son, Fred, his wife, Karen and sons, Calvin and Jake of Albuquerque; daughter, Susan of Albuquerque; and daughter, Joanne Chaplin, her husband, Douglas and children, Justin and Victoria of Rio Rancho, NM. "The Colonel," will be dearly remembered by his children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors. The family would also like to thank all the wonderful angels at both Crossroads Hospice and Maxim Healthcare who helped to fill John's last days with compassion, love, and caring. Services will be held at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd., on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. followed by internment at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Friends may visit French Mortuary on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the Salvation Army, or the March of Dimes. BAKER -- Mary Nichols Baker, beloved wife of 62 years of SGM John H. Baker, Jr., passed away on March 9, 2004. She is survived by her husband; brother-in-law, Charles Baker and wife, Steffi of Leesburg, FL; six brothers and sisters, Lula Sheridan of Columbia, SC, Eleanor Denny, Aztec, NM, Marguerite Goon and husband, Carroll of Albuquerque, Nick Nichols and wife, Cleo of Sumter, SC, Gloria Kerr and husband, Bill of Durham, NC, and George Nichols and wife, Mary Ann of Greenwood, SC; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mary attended the Kirtland Air Force Base Chapel. She was active in the Ko Shari Garden Club in Albuquerque. She was a charter member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Sumter, SC and was a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross and the VA. CARRELL -- Ralph I. Carrell, age 84, a resident of Albuquerque since December 1988, died on March 11, 2004 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born October 4, 1919 in Cedar Hill, TX to James Waddell and Rua Ragland Carrell. He served for five years in the U.S. Army, Company F, 53rd Infantry during World War II. He worked in sawmills and a plywood mill in White City, OR until his retirement in 1981. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, James and Rua Carrell and three brothers, Jimmy Carrell, Robert Carrell and Ray Carrell. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Peggy J. Carrell; sons, Jeffery Carrell and wife, Hermie of Washington, Phillip Carrell and wife, Cheryl of Pahrump, NV; stepson, Douglas Chapman of Shady Cove, OR; stepdaughters, Kim Chapman of Phoenix, AZ, Samra Chavez and husband, Tony of Albuquerque; a grandson, Cole Tague of Phoenix, AZ; and a granddaughter, Chrissy Reynolds and husband, Richard of Central Point, OR. CLARK -- -Thomas Ryan Clark, former senior federal executive and a longtime Albuquerque resident died Monday, March 8, 2004 in Albuquerque after a courageous six-year battle with renal failure. He was born September 16, 1925 in Aberdeen, WA, son of Dr. George O. Clark and Gladys Ryan Clark. His early years were dedicated to athletics, including football and baseball, but highlighted by winning Washington State championships in swimming. In April 1943, he enlisted in the US Navy Reserve and was assigned to the officer-training program at the University of Kansas. At KU, he lettered in the mile and two-mile, winning the Big Six track meet. In 1944, he was appointed a cadet at the US Military Academy at West Point. Graduating in 1948, he was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers, and married Barbara Ann Thiele of Kansas City, MO, in the same week. His first assignment, after attending the usual Army training schools at the time, was to the then-secret Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base outside of Albuquerque. There he served in the Special Weapons Unit, as Aide to the Commanding General and as staff engineer on the headquarters staff. Barbara and Tom's first three of four children were born at Sandia Base. During the Korean War, he was a company commander in the 120th Engineer Combat Battalion, 45th Infantry Division. After earning his MSEE at Purdue University, he taught in the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at West Point and then commanded the 553rd Engineer Battalion in France before he was assigned to the Atomic Energy Commission headquarters in Washington as an R&D staff officer. During his Army career he received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. After promotion to Colonel, he retired in 1968 to accept appointment as a senior executive in the AEC. During the subsequent years, he served AEC in several positions, including director of weapons production and then principal assistant director of the Division of Military Application. Upon the creation of ERDA in 1975, he acted as the deputy assistant administrator for nuclear energy. In 1976, he was appointed Deputy Manager of the Albuquerque Operations Office, where he played key roles in nuclear weapon development and production, expansion of energy development activities in solar, wind and geothermal development and creation of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant Project in southeast New Mexico. In 1983, he was appointed Manager of the Nevada Operations Office, DOE, in Las Vegas, NV, where he was in charge of the nation's underground nuclear weapons test program, as well as the Nuclear Energy Search Team, field studies for high-level nuclear waste disposal at Yucca Mountain and residual activities from atomic testing in the Pacific. After retirement from Federal service, he and Barbara returned to Albuquerque in 1988, from where he embarked upon a consulting career with several corporations, the national laboratories and Federal agencies. He was past president of the Rotary Club of Albuquerque and of the National Atomic Museum. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara T. Clark of Albuquerque; son, Thomas R. Clark, III, and wife Bonnie of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Kathleen C. Sandberg and husband, Craig of Penn Yan, NY; son, Christopher J.T. Clark and wife, Mary of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Colleen, Rebecca, Geoffrey, and Rachel. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas R. FRAZEE -- Harry A. Frazee, 85, passed away on March 11, 2004 at his home in McIntosh, New Mexico. He was born in Rend City, Illinois on March 10, 1919. He moved to New Mexico in 1945 where he met and married Helena P. Meadows. Harry joined the army in 1940 and saw combat service in the Aleutian Islands, Marshal Islands, Philippine Islands and in Okinawa. He survived four beach heads and was involved in hand to hand combat with the enemy. Harry was awarded the Purple Heart, a bronze star with four oak leaf clusters, Philippine Liberation ribbon with two bronze stars, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign ribbon, and other medals. He was seriously wounded; however, he survived his wounds only to go back into war. Harry was Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post number 3317 in Albuquerque for several years. He was a proud member of and supported the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life member of both the Purple Heart organization and of the Disabled American Veterans. Harry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helena P. Frazee, of McIntosh; one daughter, Dorothy J. Bailey and husband, Johnie of Belen; two sons, Robert D. Frazee and wife, Ruth; David E. Frazee and wife, Vicky of Edgewood; one sister, Velda Smith and husband, Harold of Colorado; three brothers, Leland Frazee of Ohio, Wayne Frazee and wife, Betty of Washington, Lindell Frazee and wife, Lona of Rio Rancho. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, three grandchildren, one sister and three brothers. FRONKIER -- Imagene Alice Fronkier, 83, a long time resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, March 11, 2004. She was born in San Angelo, TX in 1920 and grew up in Balinger, TX. She married Maj. Henry B. Fronkier, USAF (Ret.) on September 3, 1942. Together they traveled extensively with the Air Force during the next 20 years, and were assigned to California, Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, Japan, and New Mexico. They had two children: Pamela Jean Peters of Albuquerque, and Michael David Fronkier of Edmond, OK. After Henry's retirement at Kirtland AFB in 1960, Imagene and Hank opened the Isleta Laundry and Dry Cleaners in the SW valley area. Imagene proved to be an excellent business woman and created a thriving and successful operation. Her kindness and concern for customers and employees alike fashioned friendships that exist even today. They retired for a second time and sold their business in 1981. Again they traveled extensively visiting friends and family throughout the U.S. Imagene was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Henry B. Fronkier, parents, Gray and Alice McKown, and dear friend and cousin, Mary Edna Turner of Dallas, TX. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Jean Peters and husband, Jay Alan Peters of Albuquerque; son, Michael David Fronkier and wife, Katheryn of Edmond, OK; grandchildren, Kathleen Lynn Fronkier and Douglas James Fronkier, both of Edmond, OK; and her cousin, Jerry Wayne Turner of Dallas, TX. She is also survived by several close and dear friends who helped her during the last few years of her journey: Linda Rubio, close friend and caregiver to both Henry and Imagene, neighbors Robert and Mary Ann Miller, and Rob and Delores Maes, and caregivers, Carol Romero, Tess Malone, and Mary Lou Gust. GRIEGO -- Peter O. Griego, age 81 who was a member of a pioneer Los Griegos family passed away on Friday March 12, 2004. He is survived by his beloved wife, Emma L Griego of 57 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Maria and Predicanda Griego and his son, Peter Griego III. Peter was a member of Elks Lodge 461, and V.F.W. Post 401. He was a WW II and Korean War Anti-Aircraft Artillery Captain. He later became a reserve United States Public Health Officer. Griego retired as Chief Sanitarian in charge of the food service division for the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department. He was a life member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish of Los Griegos. He was a graduate of the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor of Science Degree. A viewing and visitation will be held Monday March 15, 2004 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle NE. JERNIGAN -- Earl E. Jernigan, 84, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, March 13, 2004. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Jernigan of Albuquerque; daughter, Cheryl Brownlee and husband, Bill of Truth or Consequences, NM; son, Ron E. Jernigan and wife, Frances of Aztec, NM; grandchildren, Larry Brownlee and wife, Danette, Scott Brownlee, Tama Duncan and husband, Bill, Kim Andregg and husband, Wayne, Dave Jernigan and wife, Heather, Kristine Rose and husband, Patrick, Nikki Jernigan, and Kelly Jernigan; and ten great-grandchildren. JOHNSTON -- Richard M. Johnston, 44, died March 12, 2004, in Albuquerque. A resident of the area since 1965, he was self-employed for 20 years as a roofing contractor. Born in Baltimore, Md., he is the son of Richard E. Johnston and Jean F. Whitman Johnston. Richard lived life to the fullest with his family and friends. He was a devoted father to Leslie, Samantha and Cooper. He was blessed to have the amazing love and support of Cindy Lusk and her dear family. As an outdoorsman he loved hunting, his horses and his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Jane Johnston, and by his father in 2003. He is survived by his mother, Jean; his children, Leslie Jean Martinez, Samantha Lynn Johnston and Cooper Barret Johnston; his loving partner, Cindy Reed Lusk and her children, Jerry Lusk and wife, Lauren, Jennifer Lusk and fiance, John D’Amato; sisters and brothers, Joanne Ferrary and husband, Richard of Las Cruces, Janice Lucero and husband, Arthur, John Johnston and wife, Susan of Albuquerque, Steven Johnston and wife, Laura, and Kevin Johnston, all of Denver. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Michael and James Schirmer, Angie Koeniker, Jennifer and Robert Johnston, Michelle and Greg Laskowski, Kathryn Lucero, Nicholas and Benjamin Johnston. LUCERO -- Rumalda "Romy" Lucero born April 15, 1950, a resident of Albuquerque, born in Santa Fe, went home Wednesday March 10th. She survived by her five children, Betty, Theresa, Linda, Christina, and Michael. Four sisters and three brothers, Albert, Robert, Martin, Mary, Dora, Virginia, & Gloria. She also has twelve grandchildren. MCCARTY -- Jasper "Newt" McCarty, 69, a resident of Rio Rancho, died Thursday, March 11, 2004. He is survived by his wife, Joan of 39 years; daughter, Jillene Jones and husband, Dave, all of Rio Rancho; sons, Newt McCarty and wife, Amy of Albuquerque and Jonathan McCarty and wife, Suzanne of Peralta; eight grandchildren, Tanner and Morgan Rawson, Lilly, Karina and Rhett McCarty, Levi, Jacob and Noah McCarty; sister, Luana Hopkins of Vinita, OK; and brother, David W. McCarty and Ruth Des Jardins of Albuquerque; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. McCarty was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Navy. He was founder of Joan's Chili Pepper Emporium and formerly associated with Mac's Steak in the Rough restaurants. PRESSLEY -- Dorsey McGregor Pressley, 81, a resident of Albuquerque for 11 years, died Friday, March 12, 2004. She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Paula Huguley and husband, Carl of Albuquerque, and Dr. Pam Abraham of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren, Dawn Bascomb and husband Brian of Albuquerque, and Lisa Huguley of Seattle, WA; and great-grandchildren, Natalie Bascomb and Louis Bascomb. She was preceded in death by her husband, C.R. Pressley Jr. in 1953, and her brother, Hugh Allen McGregor. Dorsey graduated from TCU with a BS in nursing in 1963. She was director of nursing services for the Tarrant County Chapter of the American Red Cross in Ft. Worth, TX for over 27 years. She also received special recognition for her work in disaster operations from the American Red Cross. She traveled to Albuquerque in 1992 to be closer to family where she resided until her death. TRUJILLO -- Eliza Borrego Trujillo, 77, our beloved mother, sister and friend, passed on to a beautiful life with the Lord, after an illness with Diabetes and Cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vicente and Beroniz Borrego, her husband of 51 years, Ismael (I.M.), an infant son, Joseph Mel, five brothers, including Joe, Ross, a twin brother, Fabian, Ernesto and Ruben. Eliza is a direct descendent of the Spanish settler Pedro Lucero de Godoy, who established Los Luceros, New Mexico in 1600. Eliza is survived by her loving sons, Matthew and Mark from the family home. She is also survived by her sisters, Theresa and husband, Charles Radosevich, Marie Pacheco and Tita Archuleta; brothers, Henry, Rumaldo and wife, Mary Louise, and Placido and wife, Delfina; two sisters-in-law, Margie and Sally Borrego. She is also survived by the Trujillo Family members, Alicia and Pete Serna, Rose Segura, Cleo and Louie Peralta, Floyd, Arturo and Polo Trujillo. Eliza was a member of the Santa Cruz de la Canada Catholic Church and a member of the Holy Family Coro. She attended Santa Cruz High School and the Chillicothe Business College in Missouri. Eliza and her husband, Ismael started the Espanola Construction Co. in 1951 and were active in business in the Espanola Valley for many years. Eliza was also a Fiesta de Onata Princess during the first Onate Fiesta de Espanola. Mrs. Trujillo is survived by many loving family members, friends and neighbors. She was a loving mother and sister. Our visiting angel of the Lord has returned home. Eliza requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dominican Sisters Convent of the Santa Cruz de la Canada Church in Santa Cruz, New Mexico. A rosary for repose of the soul of Eliza Borrego Trujillo will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the Santa Cruz de la Canada Catholic Church.
