ABBOTT -- John Lowrey (Jack) Abbott, 89, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, September 15, 2003. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia; daughters, Jean Madden of Port Angeles, WA, Judy Abbott of Austin, TX, Cris Abbott and husband, Mark Lipchick of Mountain View; CA; granddaughters, Stephany Toman and husband, Jon and their children Cameron and Melina, of Albuquerque, and Renee Marie Davis Abbott; of Austin; brothers, Tom, of Gig Harbor, WA, Bill, of Belair, MD, sister, Elizabeth Simons of Pharr, TX and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Jack was predeceased by his parents, George and Nelly; sister, Mary Miller and brother, Pat. Jack was born in Fairfield, Idaho on September 26, 1913, where he graduated high school. He attended Idaho State University and Colorado School of Mines, earning a Metallurgical Engineering degree with honors in 1941. He worked for Wright Aeronautical aircraft engines division in New Jersey during WWII, then AO Smith in Milwaukee. He returned to his beloved West, to Albuquerque, in 1952 to work with Sandia Labs, and then worked for the Navy at Kirtland AFB as a nuclear engineer until his retirement in 1980. He helped start the Albuquerque chapter of the American Society for Metals. He was also an active member of the Palo Duro Stamp Club. Jack loved the outdoors-his favorite vacations included camping and fishing. Between 1973 and 1996, Jack and Ginger lived in Peralta, turning an alfalfa field into a forest and garden. Jack donated his body to the UNM School of Medicine, with arrangements through French Mortuary. His family and friends gathered in a celebration of his life and memory at his home on September 17. BACA -- Mary " Frances" Black Baca aka "Kiki", died September 17, 2003 in Albuquerque,NM. Frances was born April 11, 1910 in San Pedro, NM to Joseph T. Black and Ljenia Montano. After the death of her mother, she helped her father raise two brothers. Upon eighth grade graduation, she went to work at Hanns Dept. Store in Albuquerque. She married Jose Cunningham Baca on August 16, 1928. They ran a coal, wood and service station in Albuquerque until 1942 when they made Gallup their home where she resided until 1993. Frances was deeply committed to her faith, family and extended family, which was demonstrated in the raising of her children and nephew, Santiago Black. She spent many hours volunteering as a Cathedral HS Panther Booster member and at her church. Her grandchildren loved to play sick in order to spend a day of pampering at "Kiki's" house. She was a source of strength and comfort and loved to celebrate each new addition to the family as a blessing. Her home and kitchen were always open; a well-know fact not only to her family, but also their friends who seem to "happen by" when she made her famous tortillas, cinnamon rolls, rice pudding and Sunday night pancakes. She spent the early morning with her breakfast in bed as she mediated on the Lord's word and prayed the Rosary; this was a special time that her grandchildren loved being a part of. She was a lady of fashion who enjoyed sewing and knitting stylish clothing and blankets for family members. She loved to garden, tinker in her yard, and was no stranger to a hammer and nail. She is survived by her daughter, Jessie Quinones of Gallup; sons, Ben B. Baca and wife, Dora of Albuquerque and Jack B. Baca and wife, Claudette of Raisin City, CA, Louise Lane, mother of Ben's children; 17 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and God Children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose; son, Alejandro; daughter, Mary; father, Joseph; mother, Ljenia; father-in-law, Alejandro Baca; mother-in-law, Maria Agueda Cunningham; sisters, Mary Griego and Ramona Burkholder; and brothers, Joseph T. Black, Genaro Black and Fred Black. A Mass and Celebration of the life of our beloved mother and Kiki will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup, NM. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Joel Quinones, Joseph Baca, Stephen Baca, John Matthew Fuhs, III, Christopher Ortega and Michael Sanchez. BERTINO -- James Peter Bertino, 79, of Santa Fe, NM, died on Monday, September 15, 2003. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa; sister, Flora; father, Dominic; and mother, Giacinta. Mr. Bertino was born in Raton, NM, on July 1, 1924, to Dominic and Giacinta Bertino. James was Valedictorian of Santa Fe High School in 1943, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, where he graduated in 1947 from Yale University. He was also a member of Yale Chapter of the Society of Sigma XI. From 1947-1983, was employed as a chemist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. James was an avid traveler and botanist, and loved the blues! James is survived by his daughters, Anne (Patrick) Bertino of Phoenix, AZ, and Paula (Neal) Bertino of Santa Fe; and son, Peter Bertino of Las Vegas, NV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be donated to Open Hands and/or St. Vincent de Paul Society of Santa Fe in Jim's name. Serving as pallbearers will be Peter Bertino, Patrick Baumann, Neal Skiver, Charles DeMott, Mark Springer and Jeffery Gomez. CHAVEZ -- Pete A. (Pedro) Chavez July 4, 1930 - September 5, 2003 Pete A. Chavez, 73, died in California where he resided for the past 35 years. Pete is survived by his wife, Lucy Andrade Chavez; sons, Martin and Pete Jr.; daughter, Gina Chavez Almeyda; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandsons; a sister, Virginia Lujan; and several nieces and nephews. Pete was born in Valencia, New Mexico. He attended Albuquerque High School. He enjoyed telling jokes, hunting, and playing music. An accomplished musician, he played several instruments and performed with several local groups during the 1950s. During this time he married and started a family. He initially worked for Whitmer Mills as a lumberjack and later as a machinist at ACF. He served in the US Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict. In 1968, he moved his wife and daughter to California. He worked as a machinist in the aerospace industry and as a musical instrument repairman for the Los Angeles Unified School District. In his retirement, Pete enjoyed playing video casino games and cards and became a Tai Chi instructor. Rosary and Vigil Service will be at St. Francis Church, 820 Broadway SE in Albuquerque, Thursday, September 18, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will also be at St. Francis Church, Friday, September 19, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. Interment is at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

CHEROMIAH -- Ted "Doc" Cheromiah, 50, a resident of Albuquerque, NM for five years and former resident of Prescott, Arizona, passed away on September 16, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Debra Cheromiah; son, Franklin Cheromiah and daughter, Theresa Cheromiah all of Albuquerque, NM; brother, Angus Cheromiah of Grants, NM. He is also survived by numerous other relatives in Laguna Pueblo; Arizona and upstate New York. Ted was a veteran of the US Navy; he served as a Boatswain's Mate during the Vietnam War and as a Hospital Corpsman during Desert Storm and was active in the Naval Reserves. He was member of the VFW in Prescott, Arizona. Ted was employed by the Veterans Administration for 26 years. He was a Gourd dancer for the Pow Wow, dancing in the Gathering of Nations. Ted was a very loyal, honorable, loving husband and father and had a good sense of humor. Prayer service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at French Mortuary - Westside Chapel with Deacon Bob Lewis, officiating. DURAN -- Allie F.Duran, age 90, passed away September 13, 2003. FOUNTAS -- Dennis Fountas, age 68, lifetime Tucumcari, NM resident, died Tuesday evening at his home in Tucumcari unexpectedly. Dennis Fountas was born November 7, 1934 in Tucumcari NM. He was a member of the St. Anne's Catholic Church. He served in the US Navy for four years. He was a member of the VFW. Dennis was retired from the Tucumcari Public School System where he was maintenance supervisor for a number of years. He was an accomplished musician and enjoyed playing at various community functions up until the time of his death. Surviving Dennis Fountas is his daughter, Donna Chavez and her husband, Dr. Ben Chavez of Amarillo, TX; grandsons, Jonathan and Jordon Chavez both of Amarillo, TX. His longtime companion, Beatrice Cassidy; and her two sons, Tom and Gene Cassidy. Rosary will be recited on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Dunn Memorial Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be offered on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Anne's Catholic Church in Tucumcari. Burial will follow in the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery.

HALAMA -- Lars E. Halama, 86, longtime resident of Albuquerque who came to New Mexico from Los Angeles, California passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2003. Lars was born August 6, 1917 the son of Carl and Hilda Enderstein Halama in Los Angeles, California. He had been an administrator in the hospital and education areas before retiring. Lars was a member of the Albuquerque Rotary Club, Jaycees, the New Mexico Amigos, Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, and had been a Albuquerque City Commissioner. He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Norbert Halama in 1987. Lars is survived by his parents, Carl and Hilda Halama; four children, Kenneth Halama and wife Gloria, Lisa Rutherford and husband Alan, Steven Halama and wife, Lindalie, Stephanie Thomas and husband Dave; one sister, Edla Garling; grandchildren, Jennifer, Ormar and wife Laura, Kathryn and husband Charles, Christopher, Kenda, Carl, Spencer, and Kinsey; two great-grandchildren, Brook and Brandon Halama. A Memorial Service for Lars will be held on Monday, September 22, 2003 at 1:30 PM at St. Mark's on the Mesa Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Pl. NE, Albuquerque. LOVE -- John William Love 1925-2003, 78, a resident of Mid-Valley Air Park in Los Lunas, NM passed away from this earth to be with the Lord at 5:46 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003. He was a very generous and loving man and was loved by all who knew him. He loved his Lord, his dear wife, Eleanor, and his family with all of his tender heart. For more than 40 years, he was a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Belen. He had been the owner of Love Electric for many years. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and during the Korean War. President Harry S. Truman wrote him a letter of commendation for his services during those two wars. He was an avid reader and consumed novels at a rapid rate. His favorites, of course, were westerns and science. John was so fascinated by flight that he attained his pilots license. His special joy was to soar the heavens. He also loved to play the fiddle.John was preceded in death by his father, John Leman Love; his mother, Mary Ann Graham Love; and his brother, Harry Henington. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor Lake Love; his daughter, Laura Love Griffith of Los Lunas; and his two sons, Ralph of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Johnny of Los Lunas. He also has two brothers, Graham Henington of Belen and Jack Love of Sandia Park. He was the extremely proud grandfather of nine grandchildren, James, John G., Jennifer, Julia, Joni, Miriam, Martha, Deborah and Hannah. He had equal pride in his eight great-grandchildren, Allen, Ansel, Dade, Ana, Jaden, Amber, Jonathon and Jessie James. One of the last things that left Johns mouth was this: Its painful when it ends, but Im glad I had this dance, and Im glad it was with Eleanor. Johns family and friends will say their farewells to him at the First Baptist Church of Belen at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20. He will be interred at the Terrace Grove Cemetery in Belen. Pallbearers will be Cecil Chance, Richard Gutierrez, Harold Crump, Truitt Stanford, Fred Valdez, Vern Mullins, Randy Misener, and Bud Stone. MONTOYA -- Joe Paul Montoya, 26 years old, went home to be with our Lord on September 17, 2003. Mr. Montoya was born and raised in Albuquerque, but currently resided in Phoenix, AZ. We will all miss Joe's sweet smile and the way he always made us laugh. Joe is survived by his loving companion, Veronica Acosta and their 13-month-old daughter, Elizabeth Jessica Montoya. Also surviving him are his mother, Laura Padilla; step-father, Anthony Padilla; grandmother, Gina Escalante; one brother, Daniel Padilla and wife, Lynette; three nephews, Isaiah Garcia, Daniel Padilla and Dominic Jerome Padilla; one niece, Isis McGarvey; one aunt, Cathy Lucero and husband, Tony; and one cousin, Joshua Lucero. NOGALES -- Joe Nogales, 66, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003. He is survived by his brothers, Louis Nogales and wife, Gloria and John Nogales and wife, Julianne; sisters, Mary Helen Flores and husband, Ted, all of Albuquerque and Rose Ann Valenzuela of Las Cruces; fiancee, Maria Sommers of Las Cruces; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rosalio "Rosy" and Elaisa Nogales and nephew, Louis Nogales, Jr. Mr. Nogales served in the U.S. Marine Corps. from 1955 to 1959. He volunteered for St. Vincent de Paul at Holy Ghost Church for many years and he also volunteered at the VA Hospital for many years. Rosary will be recited Friday, 8:30 a.m., followed by the Mass at 9:00 a.m., at Holy Ghost Church, 833 Arizona SE, with Father Thomas J. Mayefske, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. SANCHEZ -- Mrs. Emma Candelaria Sanchez, 94, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on September 16, 2003 at home with her loving daughter, Mary Lou, at her side. Mrs. Sanchez is survived by three daughters, Emily Martinez and husband. Johnny, Rosie Serna and Mary Lou Saavedra and husband, Felix; five sons, Charles Sanchez and wife, Dolores, Willie Sanchez and wife, Josephine, Eusebio Sanchez Jr., Paul Sanchez and wife, Patricia, Johnny Sanchez and wife, Sandra; one brother, Epifanio Candelaria; 37 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great grandchildren; special niece, Frances Gonzales; Special granddaughter, Evelyn Costales; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Sanchez was preceded in death by her husband, Eusebio Sanchez Sr.; her daughter, Lucy Tafoya; her grandsons, Willie Sanchez Jr. and Victor Anaya; and her son in law, Eloy Serna. Mrs. Sanchez was a member of the Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart League, a pioneer of the San Jose Community, was an avid bingo player and had a great sense of humor. SCHREINER -- Edgar T. Schreiner of Cedar Crest, NM passed away on September 17, 2003 at 80 years of age. Ed was a New Mexico resident of 47 years, an Army Veteran of WWII and a retired engineer from Sandia National Laboratories. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Emmelienne; son, John and daughter-in-law, Cindy; daughter, Ellen; son-in-law, Phil; four grandchildren, Jonathan, Lindsey, Stephen and Rachel; two brothers, Harold, Gilbert and Gil's wife, Lucille; sister, Agnes; and sister-in-law, Elfrieda. Ed's older brother, Ernie, went to be with the Lord two years ago. Ed was an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. He was loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Prince of Peace Lutheran School, the American Heart Association, or Civitan International Foundation in his name. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 12:30 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 12121 N. Hwy, 14 in Cedar Crest.

SILVA -- Piedad B. Silva, born in La Joya in November 1924 and resided in Albuquerque, went to be with the Lord at age 78, on September 17, 2003 after a long illness. She was preceded by her son, Johnny; her husband, John Silva; and brothers, Jerry and Tomas Baca. Piedad is survived by her son, Tomas Silva and wife, Vickie of Alameda; daughter, Janet of Albuquerque; brothers, George and Rudy Baca; sisters, Elia Homer and Elma Sanchez; grandchildren, Isidro and Victor Serda, Diane Watkins, John Silva, Debbie Gomez, Cyndi Corey; and 14 great-grandchildren. May Piedad rest in Peace. Funeral Services for Mrs. Silva will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at El Buen Samaritano Church. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. TENORIO -- Mela Tenorio, age 88, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Monday September 15, 2003. Survivors include her two sisters Rose Zamora and Cora Johnson, both of California; one brother, Pete Tenorio and wife Carolyn of Albuquerque and numerous nieces and nephews. Her long time companion John E. Riedle preceded her in death in February 2003. Mela retired from the Corps Of Engineers and she owned Mela's Ceramics. A memorial mass will be held Friday, September 19, 2003, 10:30 A.M. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 619 Copper NW. ZACHEWICZ -- Steven J. Zachewicz born September 10, 1952 to the late Edmund and Leda Zachewicz passed away unexpectedly at his home in Fontana, CA on May 27, 2003. A 1970 graduate of Albuquerque High School, Steve served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed by Verizon Communications for the past 25 years. Beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He is survived by daughter, Yaling Santiago; son, Steven J. Zachewicz; grandchildren, Michael Gonzales and Katherene Santiago all of Fontana, CA; sister, Nancy Littrell and husband, Chuck of Norwalk, CA; niece, Michelle Gitzler; and nephews, Michael and Jeffrey Littrell. Services were held in Fontana, CA with burial at the Riverside National Cemetery.
