Andazola -- Josephine M. Andazola, age 78, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Sunday in a local hospital. She is survived by her children, Fred, James, Franklin Andazola and Debbie Van Dyke; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anne Angeletti and Rose Maddaleni; brother, Frank Marcelli. The Rosary will be recited 7:00 p.m., Thursday, in the chapel of Fitzgerald and Son Funeral Directors. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Friday, at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 4th at Mildred NW. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Barela -- Concepcion (Connie) Barela, 52, a resident of Albuquerque most of her life, passed away Monday, May 22, 2000. Beloved wife of Tranquilino J. Barela (T.J.). Mother of Valerie Templin and husband, Art, Jose Dario Barela and wife, Michelle, Lawrence Barela and Yvette Garcia, Tanya Barela, Cathy Barela, James Barela, Jesse (Enrique) Cardiel and wife, Karen, and Shawn Storey. Grandmother of Jaime Espinoza III, Juan and Aurea Cardiel, Jose Dario Barela Jr., and the late Leandra Barela. Daughter of Frank P. Armijo and the late Mary Armijo. Sister of Johnny Armijo and wife, Frances, Marcella Padilla and husband, Art, Marty Armijo, Peter Armijo and wife, Joann, Gina Lopez, and Tony Armijo. Her brothers, Frank Armijo Jr. and Andrew Armijo preceded her in death. Connie was an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. A Rosary for Connie will be recited on Thursday evening, 7:00 p.m., at St. Anne Church with viewing beginning at 6:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, 9:00 a.m., at St. Anne's. Chavez -- Manuelita"Nellie" B. Chavez, age 82, a resident of Albuquerque died, Saturday, May 20, 200. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Reinhardt and husband, Will, and Carmen Chavez; sons, Jessie Chavez and wife, Viola, and Paul Chavez, all of Albuquerque; and Richard Chavez and wife, Maria Carmen of San Antonio, TX; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan S. Chavez in 1982. Mrs. Chavez was an active member of Our Lady of Annunciation Church. She was a member of the Marianites and a Eucharistic Minister who often visited the sick and shut-ins. Mrs. Chavez taught her entire family to love and to have faith in God. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, May 24, 2000, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Ferris -- Dorothy N. Ferris passed away on May 22, 2000. She was born in Jenkins (Crossroads), New Mexico on November 7, 1912 to Ross and Martha Norton. The family moved to Wellman, Texas, where she went to school. After graduating in 1930, she returned to New Mexico for good. On June 3, 1932, she married Charlie Ferris. They spent 61 years together before Charlie died in 1993. They lived in Lincoln, Ft. Stanton, and Capitan until 1954, when they moved to Tularosa and opened a Tastee Freez, which they ran until they retired in 1974. Dorothy moved from Tularosa to Edgewood in 1997. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Ross and Martha Norton; a brother, Gene Norton (1941); and a son, Gary (1964). She is survived by a brother, Charles Norton of San Antonio, TX; a son, Charles Melvyn Ferris and his wife, Sandra of Edgewood; two grandchildren, Anna Ferris of Albuquerque and Mike and his wife, Sharon of Longmont, CO; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Whitney Ferris of Longmont, CO. Dorothy is also survived by a very special adopted family, Kay Hawkins and daughter, Lauree of Phoenix, AZ. Dorothy was always very active. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Carrizozo, NM, and a member of the Woman's Club in both Capitan and Tularosa. The Senior Citizens groups in Tularosa and Edgewood were very important to her. Dorothy loved gardening, knitting, and crocheting. She loved to play cards and dominoes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Older American Center, 1050 Bookout Lane, in Tularosa. A Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 27, 2000 at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home in Alamogordo.

Gallegos -- Rebecca A. (Becky) Gallegos, formerly of Santa Fe, died May 11, 2000, in Columbus, Ohio after a brief illness. Becky was born and raised in Tucumcari, NM. She attended Highlands University and the University of New Mexico. She taught school in Quay County. Becky married her husband, Mike on August 30, 1941, and moved to the family ranch outside of Logan, NM, and in 1945, they moved to Santa Fe, where she lived until 1993, when she moved to Columbus, Ohio for health reasons. She lived with her sister, Agnes until her time of death. While in Santa Fe, Becky belonged to the St. Francis Cathedral Altar Society, she was a member of the Order of St. Francis and the St. Therese Reading Circle, and also volunteered at St. Vincent's Hospital. Becky retired from the State of New Mexico, where she worked for 30 years. After her retirement, Becky traveled extensively within the United States and abroad. Becky was preceded in death by her husband, Merced (Mike) Gallegos (a prominent NM politician who held several high positions within state government); parents, Elisco and Genieve Austin; brother, Frank Austin, all of Tucumcari; sister, Stella Murch and nephew, Anthony Murch, both of Columbus, OH; step-brother, Bill Giddings of Tucumcari; brothers-in-law, Bonnie Gallegos, Cleofas Gallegos and Ted Gallegos; sister-in-law, Lucia Gallegos, all of Logan, NM. Becky is survived by sister, Agnes Bosworth of Columbus, OH; step-sister, Alice Gross of Rockford, IL; nephews, Michael Bosworth and wife, Sharon, Walter Murch, Bobby Murch and wife, Kathy; nieces, Rena Ferguson and husband, Terry, Becky Anna Jackson and husband, Jim; sisters-in-law, Julia and Sefie Gallegos; nephews, Ernest Gallegos and wife, Lucy, Tommy Gallegos and wife, Pat, Albert Gallegos (whom Becky considered as her own son) and wife, Anabelle, Louie Gallegos and wife, Bea, and Danny Gallegos; Godson, Anthony Gallegos (whom Becky considered as her grandson) and wife, Belinda. Becky is also survived by many great-nieces and nephews, and many other relatives. Mass was held on Monday, May 15, 2000, 12:30 p.m., at St. Matthias Church in Columbus with burial at Northlawn Memory Gardens in Weterville, Ohio, under the direction of Schoedinger Funeral Services. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass, which will be held for Becky on Thursday, May 25, 2000, 5:15 p.m., at St. Francis Cathedral, Santa Fe, NM, with Rev. Jerome Martinez y Alire officiating.

Gilliam -- Mr. George A. Gilliam Sr., 76, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family on May 22, 2000. Mr. Gilliam was the beloved husband of 57 years to Mrs. Andrea Gilliam. He is also survived by his four daughters, Cathy Sanchez and husband, Levi, Dorothy Sanchez, Carmen Contreras and husband, Elfie and Ramona Aragon and husband, Richard; three sons, George Gilliam Jr., John Gilliam and wife, Laura and Fred Gilliam and wife, Laura; a son-in-law, Robert Romero; 13 grandchildren, Levi Jr., Brian Sanchez, Joe and Ray Segura, Stephanie and Jessica Sanchez, Michelle Lujan, David Gilliam, Michael and Alicia Gilliam, Andrea Contreras, Carlos and Amanda Aragon; five great-grandchildren, Zebadiah, Mariah, Devin, Rachel and Joshua; a very special, lifelong friend, Tino Carrillo; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mr. Gilliam was the last survivor of five children of his parents, Fred and Lotita Gilliam who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Vangie Romero in March of 1998; and his son-in-law, Steven Sanchez in May of 1999; his parents; three brothers; and one sister. He was the last surviving member of his family. Mr. Gilliam was a member of the Catholic Church. He was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Euchartistic Minister, and a proud member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #49. George was more than a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a man who personified benevolence and a blue-collar work ethic. He was a man who drew strength from and provided inspiration for his family. He will be greatly missed. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening, 7:00 p.m., at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 300 Mildred NW, with visitation at the church after 6:30 p.m. Deacon Mercy Villarael, reciting. Gleasner -- Hazel Purkey Gleasner, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, passed away in Albuquerque on May 22, 2000. She was born July 10, 1911 in Moline, Kansas to Richard and Mary Ellen Purkey. She is survived by her children, Julie Ann Smith and husband, Doug of Bakersfield, CA, Robert J. Gleasner of Albuquerque, and Jo Ann Mickelson and husband, Alan of Tijeras; grandchildren, Robyn and Cheryl Gleasner, Barbara and Jessica Smith; two brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. She was a"stay at home Mom" that enjoyed cooking, sewing clothes for her daughters or helping them make Barbie doll clothes. She was an avid fisherman that was always the first one up and the first one to get her line wet. She lived most of her years in Albuquerque in the same neighborhood near Old Town until the last three years, where she made her home at Westland House. Thank you to the special, caring people at Westland House who were so kind. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association or the American Cancer Society. Goodman -- Edythe (Eddye) Katz Goodman, born May 30, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York, died May 22, 2000, while residing at Manzano Del Sol in Albuquerque. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fannie and Samuel Katz and her husband of 41 years, Irving (Goody) Leon Goodman. She is survived by her sister, Sarah Kibrig of Los Angeles, CA; her brothers, David Kates of St. Petersburg, FL, Elias Katz of Berkeley, CA and Saul Katz of Los Angeles, CA; her daughter, Marcia Goodman Landau of Albuquerque; her grandchildren, Michelle Landau Stapp of Albuquerque and Neil Frederick Landau of Brooklyn, NY; her great-grandchild, Alex Ehlowin Stapp of Albuquerque; and many loving nieces and nephews. She expressed a deep affection for her son-in-law, Dr. David Landau and her devoted companion, Glenda Barnett. Eddye grew up in New York City, completing her schooling there. She earned her Bachelor's degree from City College of New York in 1933. She worked for various agencies of the state and was employed by the Bronx County Court for 40 years. The last 15 of these years, she spent as the Court Clerk of the Surrogates Court in the Bronx. She retired in 1970 and moved with her husband to a new retirement community in St. Petersburg, Florida. After her husband's death in 1974, she remained in St. Petersburg until 1999 when she moved to Albuquerque where her daughter resides. Eddye was a bright, loquacious woman with a fascination for stocks and the stock market. She also took great delight in making and collecting costume jewelry. She was kind, generous, and gentle. Her gracious warmth extended to her family and her friends both old and new. Her soft, loving ways still will be missed by those she touched. A Memorial service will be held at Nahalat Shalom Congregation, L Building, 3606 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, Thursday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m. Eddye's deep and abiding concern for social injustice made the ACLU her favorite charity. Greenleaf -- Edward E."Bill" Greenleaf, 70, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 22, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sadie Greenleaf of the family home; son, Daniel Greenleaf of Seattle, WA; daughter-in-law, Laura Greenleaf of Albuquerque; daughters, Mary Catherine Johnson and husband, Ron of Tijeras and Sandra Mascarenas and husband, Joe of Los Lunas; grandchildren, Timothy S. Greenleaf, Jennifer Greenleaf, Rachel Greenleaf, Michael Greenleaf, Kathryn Johnson, Nicholas Mascarenas, Elizabeth A. Greenleaf, Brandon Mascarenas, Shannon Johnson, Eric Greenleaf, Matthew Mascarenas, Eli Johnson, Brittany Mascarenas, Zachary Johnson, and Loriann Johnson; sister, Norma Hormell of Alamogordo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, W. Michael Greenleaf in 1999. Mr. Greenleaf served seven years in the Army Air Corp. He worked 20 years with the Albuquerque Journal, ten years with Continental Trailways, and three years with the New Mexico Highway Dept. He attended the Pulmonary Lung Gym at Lovelace. He was a member of the VFW, and Calvary Chapel. Mr. Greenleaf loved watching old western movies. Ludi -- Eloy E. Ludi, 81, a lifelong and well known resident of Las Vegas, NM, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2000, following a long struggle with Leukemia. Born in 1919, he was a retiree from the Department of Labor, where he was Director of the Las Vegas office for 40 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Jacob Ludi and Cecilia CdeBaca Ludi; brothers, William Ludi Sr., John J. Ludi Sr., Louis Ludi Sr., and Eddie Ludi; sister, Annie Mares and in-laws, L.C. Espinoza and Rosalie Chavez Espinoza. Eloy is survived by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Lula of the family home; daughters, Carolyn Joann Carr and husband, Bill, Dorothy Withers and husband, Dennis, and Deborah Leitch and husband, Kevin; one son, Lloyd Ludi and wife, Christine. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Josh Blackmore, Robin Nowaki, Terryl Blackmore, Rodney Blackmore, Melissa Begeman, Bryan Withers, Jason Withers, Lloyd Aaron Ludi, Ryan Ludi, Andrea Leitch, Jonathan Leitch, Ian Leitch and Heath Leitch, along with ten great-grandchildren. Waudby, both of Ft. Worth, TX. Mrs. Lyle was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Herbert Pearson; and her sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Pearson Waudby. Thelma was born August 21, 1920 in Kansas City, KS to William T. and Gertrude Pearson. She was an accomplished pianist and also gave music lessons. She met John at Ft. Leavenworth, KS in 1937. They have remained sweethearts ever since. Mrs. Lyle went on to complete her degree as a registered nurse from St. Joseph's Hospital in Kansas City, MO. As the wife of an Army careerist, Mrs. Lyle lived in many different cities and countries throughout Europe. She was an active member of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church for many years. Memorial Rosary will be recited Friday, May 26, 2000, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church, Claremont & Vermont Streets NE. Manzanares -- Mr. Leo Manzanares died Monday in Albuquerque at the age of 92. Mr. Manzanares was a member of the Catholic Church. He was born in Buena Vista, NM on April 10, 1908. He is survived by his son, Daniel J. Manzanares of Aurora, CO; four grandchildren; sister, Mary Paez; niece and Goddaughter, Charleen Castillo and husband, Victor with whom he resided for 21 years; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Mckee -- John DeWitt (Jack), McKee, age 80, died on April 26, 2000, in Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, NM. He was cerebal palsied at birth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis DeWitt and Mary Emma McKee and a brother, Ellwood M. of Philadelphia, PA. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette, a brother, Donald P., of Kerrville, TX, a sister-in-law, Helen McKee of Philadelphia, PA, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families, and many friends. McKee was born on December 22, 1919 in Emporia, KS. Early on throughout his school years, he was a writer, reporter, editor, columnist, and later a rewrite man for the Albuquerque Tribune. He graduated from Concordia, KS High School in 1938, then earned a bachelor's degree magna cum laude at Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, KS in 1943. When the family later moved to Albuquerque, Jack enrolled in the graduate school at the University of New Mexico. There he became sports information director and also managing editor of Alumnus Magazine. From 1952 through 1958 he was a junior fellow, graduate assistant, teaching assistant and instructor of English. He graduated with a PhD in American Studies in 1959. In the fall of 1959 he became a faculty member of the Humanities Department at the New Mexico Institute of of Mining and Technology in Socorro, NM. He was Assistant Professor from 1959-1966, Associate, 1966-1970 and full Professor from 1970 to 1985 when he retired as Professor Emeritus. In Socorro Jack and his wife joined the First Presbyterian Church, and he became an elder. He soon began to edit the church's newsletter, The Courier, in which he wrote a column called Between You and Me which he contributed monthly (except June and July) for 18 years, up to his death. Meanwhile he was appointed to the planning council of NM Developmental Disabilities, Socorro County Services for the Handicapped (later, TRESCO) and United Cerebral Palsy. He also took part in the economic concerns of the handicapped, received the Who's Crippled? award from The National Society for Crippled Children and Adults (now Easter Seal Society). Further, he received a Distinguished Service Award from Kansas Wesleyan in 1991. He was a member of the Society of Professional Journalists (Sigma Delta Chi), Socorro County Historical Society, New Mexico Folklore Society, Friends of the Socorro Public Library, Menaul Historical Library of the Southwest (Albuquerque), Kappa Tau Alpha, Phi Alpha Theta and Pi Gamma Nu. He is also listed in the 55th edition of Who's Who in America. He has written numerous articles, letters, essays, poetry, and some fiction. His books are Two Legs to Stand On, My Battle with Cerebral Palsy; William Allen White: Maverick on Main Street; and Time of Trouble, Time of Triumph: A Centenial History of the First Presbyterian Church of Socorro, NM. He was also published in other books and in quarterly magazines. This multi-faceted person spent his life fighting the battle of literacy. But he also liked to try his hand at water coloring and enjoyed travelling around New Mexico. Although he had several overlapping careers, he sometimes felt he hadn't done enough. He was a person who had the common touch. A Memorial service will be held at Macey Center on the NM Tech campus on May 26, 2000 at 3:00 p.m.

Miranda -- Valentina S. Miranda, 91, co-founder of Blue Spring, NM in 1928, along with her late husband, Max, passed away on May 21, 2000. She was a member of the Veguita Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Max Miranda in 1990 and her loving daughter, Helen D. Miranda in 1999. She is survived by three loving daughters, Viola Romero of Albuquerque, Pricilla of Los Lunas, and Carmen McCleery of Albuquerque; two sons, Audillo of Albuquerque and Max Jr. of Albuquerque; 12 loving grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one sister-in-law, Fannie Saavedra of Belen. Ortiz -- Edward B."Lalo" Ortiz, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, May 22, 2000. He is survived by his brother, Frank O. Ortiz; nieces, Frances Perea and husband, Paul, all of Albuquerque, Kathy Undiks and husband, Francisco of Aurora, CO and Clarissa Ortiz; and nephew, Frank M. Ortiz, both of Albuquerque. Mr. Ortiz was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary A. Ortiz in 1984; and nephew, Eddie F. Ortiz. He was employed as an inspector for 45 years with Southern Union Natural Gas Company. Mr. Ortiz was a longtime member at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. He served in the United States Army and was a WWII Veteran. Mr. Ortiz enjoyed bowling. Rees -- Virginia Lucille"Betty" Rees, 82, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2000 at her residence of four years, Good Samaritan Village, Socorro, NM. Betty was born on May 28, 1917 to Frank and Bertha M. (Melton) Murphy in Kansas, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cortland M."Doc" Rees in June, 1969; and sisters, Katherine"Marie" Minster, Louella Jones, Thurza Wolters and Ella Mae Remkus. She is survived by her nieces, Norma L. Hoffman, Carol McCaslin, Sharon McCormick, Nancy Smith and Connie Joe Sutton; and many other relatives and friends. Betty and Doc moved to Socorro in 1952 and were the first owners of the El Rio Motel & Restaurant on California Street. In 1966, Betty purchased the Tribe of K Dress Shop on the Plaza, which she operated for over ten years. Betty was a pillar in the community and was recognized for her outstanding achievements as a businesswoman, as well as her remarkable commitment and dedication to community services. In 1971, she became the First Lady President of Socorro Chamber of Commerce and was honored with the Chamber's Bill Eaton Award in 1982. Betty was also an active member of the Sunset Club of New Mexico and was the First Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star (Chapter 9) when they moved to the new Masonic building in Socorro. She joined the First Presbyterian Church of Socorro and had been a longtime member since November 20, 1955. The City of Socorro could always count on Betty to volunteer for any charity event, political rally, or golf tournament, but more importantly, Betty could always count on the people of Socorro to be lifelong friends. Visitation will be on Friday, May 26 at Steadman-Hall Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 27, 10:00 a.m., at Steadman-Hall, with Rev. Phil Preston officiating. Interment will be in the Socorro Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Holm O.
