Beach -- The family of Father Robert M. Beach would like to thank everyone who participated in the Celebration of His Life. Words are inadequate to fully express our deep and sincere gratitude. Becerra -- Julia Lizarraga Becerra, was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, April 24, 1999. Julia was a resident of Alameda. She was born on January 27, 1921 in Mazatlan, Mexico. She is survived by her loving daughter, Rosa and husband, Edward Sipler of Albuquerque; two granddaughters, Kira A. Sipler of Seattle, WA, Bonita C. Sipler of Albuquerque. Also, surviving are Surrogate friend of the family, Filpe F. Quintana and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gonzalez. Julia loved children. She was a devoted Catholic and was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Santa Fe, NM at 7:00 a.m. Services are entrusted to Alameda Mortuary, 9420 4th St. N.W. Norbert Baldonado Jr.

Blair -- C. Ruth Blair, 82, a resident of Albuquerque for 78 years, died Friday, April 23, 1999. She is survived by her son, Samuel H. Blair and wife, Barbara of Tome, NM; daughter, Beryl Whitlow and husband, Gary of Rio Rancho; granddaughters, Bonnie Selva of Tome, NM, Mary Ruth Olsen and husband, Tom of Peru, SA, Frances Savage of Albuquerque, Sacha Blair of Tome, Shana Obermiller and husband, Scott of College Station, TX; and grandson, Lt. Reagan Whitlow and wife, Deeanne of Eagle River, AK; great grandchildren, Shawn Selva, Nisse, Haley and Benjamin Olsen, Sulie and Jason Savage. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Sam B. Blair. Mrs. Blair was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and of United Methodist Women-Elizabeth Circle, and North Albuquerque Lioness Club for 43 years and also a member of the Questers and Sanctuary SS Classes. She was the secretary for the UNM Alumni Office for many years. Services will be held Thursday, 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 314 Lead, S.W., with Rev. Clyde Stanfield officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul, NE. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming NE, Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Music and Youth Programs, 314 Lead, SW, Albuquerque, 87103. Bowen -- Jimmy Bowen, 80, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, April 23, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Weeta A. Bowen of Albuquerque; sons, Jimmy Leroy Bowen and wife, Shirley of Roswell, NM, Douglas Bowen and wife, Mary and Dan Bowen and wife, Carri, all of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; sister, Viola Vangundy of Mesa, AZ; and many other family and friends. He was a member of the International Union of Operation Engineers Local #953 and served his country during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge. Services will be held Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming, NE, with Chaplain Sandra S. Bess, officiating. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery, Santa Fe, NM. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, Monday, 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Buchanan -- Edith Buchanan, age 87, passed away April 6, 1999, at her home in Albuquerque. Born in Sylva, No. Carolina, she enjoyed and shared remarkable gifts and passions for learning and teaching. Graduating from high school at 15 and college at 18, she taught high school English for eleven years before enrolling at Duke University to pursue her graduate education. At Duke, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and awarded the degree of Ph D in 1944. Dr. Buchanan taught at WCTC (now Western Carolina Univ.), Duke, Florida State, Georgia State College for Women (now Georgia College) and University of Colorado. In 1955, she came to UNM where she remained until her retirement. At UNM, she was highly esteemed as a superb scholar, contributing faculty member, and dedicated teacher. Over the years, she inspired and enlightened thousands of students and mentored scores more--many of whom have gone on to outstanding teaching careers of their own. In 1977, she was honored by UNM as the"Outstanding Teacher of the Year". In 1978 Dr. Buchanan retired with the title Professor of English Emeritus. Dr. Buchanan's life-long friend, Margaret Meaders, preceded her in death. Dr. Buchanan is survived by her brother, R. Paul Buchanan; and sister in law, Louise; her sister, Dorothy B. Higdon; three nephews, Robert Buchanan, Lyndon Higdon and Sam Higdon; and one niece, Martha Buchanan-Wood; and many, many devoted friends. She will be missed, but no doubt is enjoying her"newcomers" tour, led by Milton, Shakespeare, John Donne, Ben Johnson and many of her other friends. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 26, 1999, at 3:00 p.m., at the UNM Alumni Chapel, with a reception following at the Maxwell Museum. Cremation arrangements were made by the Sunrise Society of NM, 891-8200.

Chavez -- Soloman P. Chavez, 80, a resident of Albuquerque for 75 years, died Thursday, April 22, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lillie Chavez; children, Solomon Chavez III and wife, Eve of Colorado Springs, CO, Charlene Gonzales and husband, Robert of Taos, Gina Chavez, Steve Chavez and wife, Gina, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Monica and husband, Kirk, Greg, Marcos, Joseph, Miguel and Lisa; great-grandchildren, Rheana and Ryne; sisters, Olivia Martin, Rachel Chavez and Priscilla Griego and husband, Bill of California; sisters-in-law, Tillie Pacheco and Gertrude Costales; brother-in-law, Prospero Jaramillo; and many loving nieces and nephews. Solomon retired in 1983 after serving as President of Stryco Sales, Inc. He had previously worked for ICX, NM Health Department and Bond and Wiest. Mr. Chavez was a life member of Masonic Temple Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M.; Scottish Rite Temple; a former member of El Buen Samaritano United Methodist Church; and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was an avid golfer, belonged to the Senior Golf Association for several years, and played golf in the Senior Olympics. Memorial services will be held Monday, 11:00 a.m., Trinity United Methodist Church, 3715 Silver SE, with Rev. Jim Massey officiating. Cowdrey -- Robert Fletcher Cowdrey was born September 27, 1937 in La Junta, Colorado, to Virginia Weatherford Cowdrey and Albert Fletcher Cowdrey. Bob passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 1999. For a number of years, Bob worked in the banking business in Albuquerque. For the last few years he was in the commercial cleaning business. He was a long time member of La Mesa Presbyterian Church where his activities were many. He was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque. Mr. Cowdrey is survived by four sons, Todd Pease and his wife, Angela of Littleton, CO, Rod Cowdrey and his wife, Caryn, Rob Pease and his wife, Chrissy and Rick Cowdrey and his wife, Liz, all of Albuquerque; five grandchildren and a 6th on the way; mother, Virginia Cowdrey; sister, Martha Greer of Albuquerque; brothers, Ron Cowdrey and his wife, Phyllis of Bosque Farms and John Cowdrey and his wife, Kim of Las Cruces; his former wife, Ann Pease of Edgewood. His father, Fletcher Cowdrey, preceded him in death in 1983. A Memorial Service will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at La Mesa Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joyce Leiberman officiating. Espinoza -- Tammy Marie Espinoza, 27, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt and friend passed away Wednesday, April 21, 1999 as a result of an automobile accident. Tammy was born on May 15, 1971 in Santa Fe, NM; her brothers and sisters looked up to her for love and understanding, she had a heart of gold that was so tender and loving. She leaves behind her loving husband, Robert Espinoza of the family home; her precious children, Roxanne Jessica, Robert Carlos, Richard Thomas, and a nephew she raised as a son, Ivan Espinoza, all of the family home. She is also survived by her mother, Susan Vivian Romero and Uliber Castillo; her father, Henry Rosario Chavez; two brothers, Leonard Henry Chavez and Darlene and Louis John Chavez; three sisters, Madeline Louisa Chavez and Ramiro, Elaine June Chavez and Carlos, and Marie Elizabeth Macias and husband, Rogelio; paternal grandmother, Dora V. Chavez; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitations will be this evening from 6:00 p.m. till the time of the Rosary which will be recited at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary, on the corner of 8th and Iron. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 a.m. at San Jose Catholic Church, 2401 Broadway S.E. Interment will follow at the Chimayo Cemetery in Chimayo, NM.
