In 1977, she was honored by UNM as the"Outstanding Teacher of the Year". In 1978 Dr. Buchanan retired with the title Professor of English Emeritus. Dr. Buchanan's life-long friend, Margaret Meaders, preceded her in death. Dr. Buchanan is survived by her brother, R. Paul Buchanan; and sister in law, Louise; her sister, Dorothy B. Higdon; three nephews, Robert Buchanan, Lyndon Higdon and Sam Higdon; and one niece, Martha Buchanan-Wood; and many, many devoted friends. She will be missed, but no doubt is enjoying her"newcomers" tour, led by Milton, Shakespeare, John Donne, Ben Johnson and many of her other friends. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, April 26, 1999, at 3:00 p.m., at the UNM Alumni Chapel, with a reception following at the Maxwell Museum.
