Birts -- Milo Birts, age 72, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, passed away on December 10, 1998. He is survived by Betty Birts; one son, James Birts; and two brothers. He was with Quinn & Company for 25 years and served as the Chairman of the Board and retired in 1986. He was the President of Mt. Taylor Development Corporation, member of Albuquerque Lodge #60 AF & AM, member of the Scottish Rite of Santa Fe and Ballut Abyad Shrine. He served as the Past Potentate of Ballut Abyad Shrine. Visitation will be held Monday, December 14, 1998, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Black -- Craig Call Black, Ph.D., a noted paleontologist, and museum director, died on December 5, 1998, in Albuquerque, NM of complications following chemotherapy for lymphoma. He was the son of the late El Paso pediatrician, Arthur P. Black and Mary Nichols Black. His maternal grandfather was the well-known El Paso attorney, Robert L. Nichols. He was born in Peking, China in 1932 where his father taught pediatrics and he lived there until 1936. Dr. Black briefly attended Austin High School in El Paso, but entered Kent School in Kent, CT in 1945 and graduated cum laude in 1950. He received hi Bachelor's degree from Amherst in 1954 and was appointed a Simpson Fellow at John Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore. The following year he returned to Amherst where he earned a Master's degree in Biology in 1957. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University in 1962. He began his museum career in 1960 as an Associate Curator at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh and was appointed Curator of Vertebrate Fossils two years later. In 1970 he became an Associate Professor of Systematics and Ecology at the University of Kansas. In 1972 he was appointed Director of the Museum and Professor of Geosciences at Texas Tech University. In 1975 he returned to Pittsburgh as the Director of Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Dr. Black was appointed Direct of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County on September 1, 1982 and remained there until his retirement in July 1994. Dr. Black was a member of numerous professional associations and was President of the Association of Science Museum Directors, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, the American Museum Association, and the Paleontological Society of America. In 1982, President Reagan appointed Dr. Black to serve on the National Museum Services Board and in 1985 Reagan nominated him to serve on the National Science Board for a term that ended in May 1990. While on the National Science Board, he chaired the Committees on International Science Programs, Global Environment and Change, and Biodiversity. In 1991 he was appointed by President George Bush to serve on the Environment for the Americas Board. He also served on the boards of the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property, The African Wildlife Foundation, the Explorer's Club and Explora Science Center and Children's Museum of Albuquerque, NM. In 1994 he was elected to the board of the U.S. Mexico Foundation on Science and Technology and at the time of his death was Vice-Chairman of that group. He also belonged to the California Club, the Sunsetters, the Cosmos Club, The Mt. Kenya Safari Club, the Harvard Club, and the Albuquerque Petroleum Club. Dr. Black's fascination and professional involvement with vertebrate paleontology spanned more than four decades and he maintained an active interest in research activities until his death. His work in vertebrate paleontology took him to France, Tunisia, Kenya (where he worked with Richard Leakey), South Africa, Algeria, Greece and throughout the United States and led to the publication of numerous research reports and professional journal articles. At both Kansas and Texas Tech, he trained Ph.D. candidates in the field. His wife, Elizabeth (an anthropologist known professionally as Dr. Mary Elizabeth King); a former wife, Constance Hockenberry Black of Pittsburgh; two children, Lorna Black Walsh of Albuquerque, NM and Christopher Arthur Black of Portland, OR; and two grandchildren, Joseph Gerard Walsh V and Elizabeth Ellen Walsh survive Dr. Black. Memorial Services will be scheduled at a later date at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, NM and at Kent School in May 1999. Bramlett -- Mary Lorena Hollopeter Bramlett, died December 12, 1998. She was born May 20, 1905 to parents Lorena (Rena) Lithgow Hollopeter and Rutherford Vincent Hollopeter. Preceded in death by sister, Beatrice McNall; brothers, Henry, Ralph and Walter Hollopeter. Survived by daughter, Lorena Lithgow Potter; and husband, Charles Irwin Potter of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter, Pamela Lorena Potter of Jacksonville, AR; son, William Bramlett and wife, Suzanne of Las Cruces, NM. Mary was raised in Dubois, PA, started college in Clarion, PA at the age of 17. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from UNM in 1955, at the age of 50. She"always knew" she wanted to be a teacher and taught for many years-in Santa Fe Indian Schools, Taos Pueblo Day School, Taos, NM; various New Mexico Public Schools and Albuquerque Public Schools; as well as Old Armijo and Whittier Elementary. She retired from Whittier in 1971. Her first teaching position was a once room country school in Pennsylvania. She was 18. Mary and husband, William Bramlett, came to New Mexico in the early 1930's. She loved the Southwest and absorbed its richness of art and culture. She was also a business woman-running a flower and gift shop in Albuquerque in the early 1940's. Services will be held on Tuesday, December 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Fitzgerald & Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Sandia Memorial Gardens. Chavira -- Ana M. Chavira, 49, a lifetime resident of Albuquerque and descendent of 1st Mayor of Villa de Albuquerque, Don Martin Hurtado, died Saturday, December 12, 1998. She is survived by her husband, Rick Huff; parents, Roy T. Chavira and Emma Moya; mother-in-law, Geraldine Huff; brothers, Monroe Fred Chavira, Joseph Chavira and wife, Irma Correa of Albuquerque; sisters, Bernadette Chavira and husband, Gilbert Merriman of Los Alamos, Connie Baca and husband John of Belen, Maria Bohlken and husband, Jim of Albuquerque; nephews, Michael Anthony Baca, John Stephen Baca, Jayson Chavira, Nathan and Timothy Bohlken, Carlos Merriman, Marcos and Joao Chavira and Jonathan Abeyta; two great-nephews, Jaycob and Jonathan Chavira; godparents, Joseph and Angela Chavez, and Lucy Chavira; Nine aunts; three great-aunts; eight uncles; numerous cousins; and dear friends David Michelsohn and wife, Gina Mahfouz, parents of her godson, Noah Jerome. Ms. Chavira was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Chavira; a nephew, Freddy Chavira; and grandparents, Elisa and Jose de La Luz Chavira and Amelia and Luis Montoya. To her dear friends, Ana was one of a kind. She was intensely devoted, a disciplined actor and versatile commercial voice-over specialist for clients such as Amish Connection, Pick Up Your Toys, Women's Health Horizons, and scores of others. She was also a talented singer/comedienne in Albuquerque Civic Light Opera Shows, including Fiddler On The Roof (Golde), South Pacific (Bloody Mary), Chicago (Matron Mama Morton) and Oliver (The Orphanage Keeper), as well as several operas for Opera Southwest. Ana and her soulmate and husband, Rick have operated this Albuquerque commercial recording business"Some Stuff From Huff" since 1978. Ana was also a talented Raku Potter, model for artists Tina Fuentes, and a member of the Screen Actors Guild. She has appeared on National Public Radio, and Armed Forces Radio Worldwide. Her family, friends, and husband miss her greatly. She is irreplaceable. A Scripture Service will be held, Monday, 7:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Cordova -- Mrs. Consuelo"Connie" V. Cordova, 69, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on December 11, 1998. Mrs. Cordova is survived by her former husband and friend, David J. Cordova; four sons, Eugene Cordova, Joseph Cordova and wife, Theresa, Bernard C. Cordova and wife Vaughn and David F. Cordova; two daughters, Rosemarie Cordova and Margaret Allen and husband, Stan; one brother, Anastacio Calderon and wife, Mary; three sisters, Ramona Bloomander and husband, Lyle, Sally Villa and Eloyce Page; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Connie was a public servant to the community of the South Valley and was employed with E.O.B. for 26 years. Cremation has taken place. Cornish -- Cornelia Cornish, 67, a lifelong resident of New Mexico passed away on December 10, 1998 following a lengthy illness. Collie was born January 1, 1931 to Ruth and Richard Hall and was the New Year's baby in Las Cruces, NM. Following her graduation from Albuquerque High School in 1948, she attended the University of New Mexico and married Robert Hinton on August 20, 1950. While raising her three boys, Collie began a professional career as Director of Volunteers for the University of New Mexico Mental Health Center, Lovelace Health Systems and finally the University of New Mexico Hospital where she retired in 1988. In 1987, Collie served as chair for the New Mexico Directors of Volunteer's Association and received the first Manager of Excellence Award from the Greater Albuquerque Volunteer Association. Following the death of Robert Hinton in 1986, she married P.G. Cornish in July 1987 and enjoyed many happy years together until his death in December, 1996. Her last year of life was spent with Bill Harley, her traveling companion and best friend. She is survived by her sisters, Jeannette Perlman from Livermore, California and Kathleen Rich from Ridgefield, Connecticut; sons, Rick Hinton, Ph.D. and wife, Carla Hinton, Ph.D. from Tucson, Tom Hinton, M.D. and wife, Leslie from Midland and Jim Hinton and wife, Carol of Albuquerque and grandchildren, Megan, Sam, Rebecca, David, Emily, Robert and Amy. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be Sunday December 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper, N.E. Doherty -- John J. Doherty, Sr. (Poppy), an Albuquerque resident since 1976, passed away on his 89th birthday, Thursday, December 10, 1998. He is survived by his son, John Doherty, Jr. and wife, Eileen of Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Mary Ann McDermott of Albuquerque; grandsons, Brian and Keith Doherty of Brooklyn, NY, Shawn McDermott of Frisco, TX, Danny McDermott of Albuquerque, and Kevin McDermott and wife, Shawn Marie of King George, VA; great-grandsons, Bryan and Joseph McDermott of King George, VA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Betty Doherty; four brothers; and two sisters. Mr. Doherty was born in New York City, but lived most of his life in Brooklyn. He had a distinguished 61 year career as a member of Ironworkers Local 361 Brooklyn. Radio City Music Hall, the Pan Am Building and two World's Fairs are just a few of the structures he helped construct. A master storyteller, he recently appeared on the Fox News channel's"Movietone News" program on a segment about the building of the skyscrapers of New York City. Following his retirement, he and his wife moved to the Three Fountains apartments in Albuquerque where he actively pursued his hobbies - playing pool and cards, and immersed himself into caring for his family. Rosary will be recited Monday, December 14, 1998, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with the Marianites reciting. Visitation will be held Sunday, from 5:30 until the end of the Rosary. A celebration of Mr. Doherty's life to follow. Gutierrez -- Mr. Pablo D. Gutierrez, 84, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully at home in the arms of his loving family and to be with the Lord on his Birthday, December 11, 1998. Mr. Gutierrez is survived by his special niece, Clara Lucero and was a loving grandfather to the Lucero family. Mr. Gutierrez was a member of the Catholic Church and a veteran of World War II. Jacobin -- Harold J. Jacobin, 90, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 2, 1998. He was born in Elkhart, IN and had been a resident of Corrales for 17 years. He is survived by nieces, Joyce Fogt and Elaine Thorwall. He is survived by many other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Also he leaves friends and neighbors, Pat, Theo, PJ, Roseanne, and the Zacharys. Appreciation is expressed for the very good care and concern of 10-West, St. Josephs Downtown.

Karnowsky -- Maurice M. Karnowsky, Ph.D., 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, died Thursday, December 10, 1998. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. Karnowsky; daughter, Kathryn G. Karnowsky and husband, Thomas R. Lyons of Albuquerque; grandsons, Daniel K. Lyons and Nathan K. Lyons, both of Albuquerque; sister, Sari Swee and husband, Mike of Glencoe, IL; brothers-in-law, Al Swee of Miami Beach, FL and Philip Meinzer of Kokomo, IN; sister-in-law, Eleanor Sharp of Oklahoma City, OK; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Karnowsky earned a B.S. at Purdue University and received his Masters degree and Ph.D. from New Mexico Tech. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #68 A.F. & A.M. Mr. Karnowsky was also a life member of American Society of Metallurgy. He retired after 43 years with Sandia National Labs. Mr. Karnowsky taught at UNM, TVI, and Sandia National Labs. He was a talented pianist playing for several local dance bands, including his own, The Four Friends. Mr. Karnowsky was a member of the American Federation of Musicians. He was an avid rose gardener and flower lover. Private disposition has taken place. Kelley -- Mildred A. Kelley, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1954, died Thursday, December 10, 1998. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Mr. William T. Kelley of the family home; sons, Dr. William T. Kelley, Jr. of San Gabriel, CA, Capt. Michael B. Kelley (USN (Ret.)) and wife, Barbara of Vienna, VA and Cdr. Joseph P. Kelley (USN (Ret.)) and wife, Dorothy of Moorpark, CA; daughter, Mary F. Lybrand -- Doris Ann Lybrand was born on April 13, 1926 to William and Irene Brady, and she went home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 12, 1998. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Clovis A. (Jack) Lybrand. Mrs. Lybrand was the precious mother of daughters, Jeanne Lybrand McKenney, Cathy Dawn Lybrand, Laurie Diana Schwers and Donna Lybrand Hilland all of Albuquerque. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Monique J. Ramacciotti, John L. McKenney, Alan L. McKenney, Michael B. Call, Gary C. Call, Kristina N. Schwers and Clayton A. Schwers; and eight great-grandchildren, Joshua R. Ramacciotti, John A. Ramacciotti, Morgan R. Ramacciotti, Raquel N. Ritz, Jerrilynn A. Ritz, Garrett R. McKenney, Warren A. McKenney and Grayson C. McKenney. Mrs. Lybrand was happily awaiting the birth of her ninth great-grandchild, expected the end of this year. Mrs. Lybrand is also survived by her brother, William"Bill" Brady of San Diego; sisters, Claire Garland of New York City and M.K. Brady of Albuquerque. She graduated with a G.P.A. of 4.0 from Hope Biblical Institute. Mrs. Lybrand enjoyed her time as a Sunday School Teacher and choir assistant at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in the past. She recently was pleased to attend Women's Bible Study Fellowship and volunteered to help as needed at Bear Canyon Senior Citizens Center and Manor Care Nursing Home. Doris enjoyed the fellowship with her friends at Calvary Chapel, Sandia Baptist Church, Calvary Temple Assembly of God, Oasis of Love and anywhere she could share the Good News of Jesus to everyone she met. Mannan -- Helen Lee Mannan, age 78, of San Angelo, TX, formerly of Albuquerque, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 1998. Helen was born on September 13, 1920 to J. Riley and Elizabeth Mays in Marathon, TX. She entered the military during World War II and worked for the Army as a kitchen employee in Georgia until her discharge in 1944. On October 23, 1946, she met and married Virgil Ray Mannan in Van Horn, TX and was a faithful housewife until his death in 1982. She was a devoted member of Rio Grande Baptist Church for many years. Helen also loved to bake for the church and her many friends, with her specialty being cakes and cookies. Helen is also survived by three sisters, Virgie Lambert of San Angelo, Lucy Huff of Albuquerque, NM and Colleen Simpson and husband, Walter also of Albuquerque, NM; two brothers, J.R. Mays and wife, Mary of San Angelo and Bob Mays and wife, Dixie of Whittier, CA. She also has two very special grandsons, Michael and Sammy Havins; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Rausch -- Harmon L."Mick" Rausch passed away at home on Friday, December 11, 1998 after a brief battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Delores"Dodie" with whom he had celebrated 50 years of marriage on December 6, 1998; daughters, Sandra Hecksel and her husband Ron of Scottsdale, AZ, Susan Price and her husband, John of Placitas; and son, Stephen Rausch of Albuquerque; grandchildren Rebecca and Michael Hecksel and Matthew and Amy Rausch. Mick was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 18, 1928. He and Dodie Krupp were married in 1948 and they lived in Monroe, Michigan until moving to Albuqerque in 1982. Mick retired from Service America in 1990 and enjoyed his retirement traveling, camping, tending his prolific vegetable garden, and dancing with the Albuquerque Square Dance Association. Friends will remember him best for this ability to fix anything and his good natured willingness to help. Sanchez -- Fidel J. Sanchez, 84, a resident of Belen, peacefully passed away at his home in Belen, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, December 11, 1998. Fidel was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, and was the first President of Our Lady of Belen Ushers Club under the pastorage of Father Patric Roche, and continued to be an usher for Our Lady of Belen for 45 years. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Fidel was retired from Valencia County, serving as a building inspector for ten years. Fidel worked at Becker Dalies for 30 years and was also employed by Ranchero Builders and Belen Builders. Fidel was preceded in death by his parents, Benceslado and Maria Lisiria Sanchez. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ninfa of the family home in Belen; his children, Richard Sanchez of California, Ruth Johnston and her husband, Gary of Belen, Mary Sanchez of Albuquerque, and Patrick Sanchez, also of Albuquerque; his three grandchildren, Rick Johnston and his wife, Sonya, Alan Johnston and Debra Oberer and her husband, Mark; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Adan Sanchez and his wife, Lillian of Albuquerque; as well as his many loving nieces and nephews. She married Cipriano Tapia on August 18, 1940. They made their home at Vaughn, NM following their marriage. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Parish in Vaughn. Mrs. Tapia was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Cipriano Pena; and a sister, Carolina Tenorio. Wynne -- William Joseph Wynne, 85, died Monday, December 7, 1998 at a local caring center. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 17, 1913 to Elizabeth (Bowen) and William Wynne. He worked as a machinist cameraman for Warner Brothers Film Studio in New York and for Heiland Research in Denver, CO during the years of WWII. He was recruited for the laboratory shops in Los Alamos, NM in 1951. He worked as a machinist on cameras for the optics group under Berlyn Brixner until retirement in 1976. He had lived in The Meadows Mobile Home Park since then. He married Alice Giltner Cox in 1963. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Virginia Evans Barela and son-in-law, Paul A. Barela of Houston, TX; a sister, Margaret Ryan of New Jersey; a step-son, L.E. (Ric) Cox and his wife, Cynthia and two step-grandchildren, Jill and Tyler Cox, all of Hobbs, NM; a brother-in-law, William Giltner and his wife, Peggy of Colorado Springs, CO; and by six Giltner nieces and nephews, their spouses, and ten great-nieces and nephews. He enjoyed skiing, fishing, hiking, rock hounding, square dancing, round dancing, and jewelry making. In Los Alamos he and Alice belonged to the Geological Society and to Mountain Mixers Square Dance Club. In Albuquerque, they were members of Fiesteros Round Dance Club, Allemanders Square Dance Club, and a gem and mineral club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to KNME, Sandia Hospice, or Cancer Society in his name. Following his wishes, no services will be held.
