Burgess -- Howard Burgess, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1950, passed away on May 18, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lovola Burgess; daughter, Patricia Kerr, both of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Jennifer Burita of Alexandria, VA, Julie Sturgeon of Littleton, CO; sister, Margaret Shelgren of Martinez, CA; niece, Beverly Lauderdale of Martinez, CA; nephew, Jon Shelgren of Sacramento, CA. A daughter, Suzanne Lewis preceded him in death. Howard was born on August 10, 1913 in Joplin, MO. As a youngster he moved with his family to Iowa where he attended public schools. Professionally, Howard was chief engineer at several radio stations in Iowa and worked in electronics with United Air Lines in Cheyenne, WY. In 1950 Howard moved with his wife and children to Albuquerque, working at Sandia National Laboratory until his retirement. )From his teen years on, Howard had three major interests: electronics, writing and cartooning. He built the first short-wave radio station in southern Iowa. He published many magazine articles, particularly in the areas of electronics and health. His most recent cartoon appeared in the Saturday Evening Post this past year. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Following the memorial service, his cremains will be interred in Clarksville, IA. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Presbyterian Hospice, 8300 Constitution Ave, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Arrangements by French Mortuary 10500 Lomas Blvd, NE.
