Both love Albuquerque, and became permanent residents in l951, returning from Weisbaden, Germany. Gene, predeceased by son, Vietnam Veteran, Douglas Eugene, leaves in addition to Mary, their daughter, Anne Carol Hayes; and son, Eugene W. Cox II; their two grandsons, Douglas Eugene Hayes and David Lee Hayes; his brother, Bert and wife, Carolyn Cox. Joining the Army Air Corps in l940, Gene earned his pilot wings. He loved to fly. Returning to the Air Force, Gene became current in the B-52, was Squadron Commander of the 4925th Atomic Test Squadron KAFB, and later took command of Eniwetok,55-56. Direct from the factory, Gene piloted the B-52 displayed at the KAFB Atomic Museum, Tail #13, always specifically pointed out to 8th grade students on WWII field trips from his daughter's class. Phase 2 of Gene's career was entered with equal talent and energy as a farmer, home builder, cattleman, and horseman. A pivotal family member, Gene/Dad/Grandpa, will remain in the hearts and minds of those who love him and friends who knew him. He was the"sparkplug" of any gathering, unique and fun. He told Mary long ago,"Whenever I kick the bucket, tell our friends to go home and toast my memory," . . . like his favorite song,"Show Me the Way to go Home." We love you Dad and your life. Private family interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, Gene and family ask for donations to the N. M. Boys Ranch, 6209 Hendrix Road NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110.
