Baum -- Neal Patrick Baum, died Tuesday, January 14, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Martha; sons, George and fiance, Denise, Spencer and wife, Julie; brother, Carl; mother, Mabel; in-laws, Jeannette Bush, Lois and Keith Dahlberg, Edna and Conrad Mirizio, Burton and Margie Coleman and Dottie and Henry Kreutzer. Born in Pennsylvania in 1942, Neal grew up in Syracuse, New York where he met and married Martha Coleman. After receiving his BS in physics from LeMoyne College, and his MS and PhD in solid state physics from Syracuse University in 1971, he and Martha moved to Albuquerque where they remained and raised a family. For the past 31 years, first at UNM, and later for Applied Research Associates, Inc., Neal specialized in the development of instrumentation for measurement of explosive detonation and high velocity impact. He finished his career as a principal scientist for Applied Research Associates where he directed the instrumentation effort of the Shock Physics Group. He was noted throughout the U.S. Departments of Defense and Energy for his work. In 2002, Neal received a fellowship with the Instrumentation Systems and Automation Society, acknowledging his scientific achievement as recognized by his peers. Beyond the scientific endeavors of his career, Neal was passionate about all the pursuits of the mind. He enthusiastically supported scientific education in his community, volunteering for years as a judge in the New Mexico Northwestern Regional Science and Engineering Fair. He particularly loved history, literature, and art. He leaves behind an art collection gathered from around the world, and cases of the books he read fill his home. But more than all of this, Neal was deeply cherished as a father, husband, and son. An honest, gentle, and above all, caring man, Neal greatly affected the lives of those around him with his sincerity and kindness. He will be missed. Rosary will be recited Friday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, with Kathy Garcia reciting. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 9:30 a.m., at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 1818 Coal SE, with Father Robert Chabot, SSS and Father Joseph Thai Tran, SSS, Celebrants. Pallbearers will be George P. Baum, Spencer E. Baum, Carl E. Baum, C.D. Noble and Jess Martinez. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Neal Baum's name to the Northwestern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair, University of New Mexico, Onate Hall, Albuquerque, NM 87131.
