Chavez -- Gerald"Teenie" Anthony Chavez, age 40 of De Smet, S.D. formerly of Edgewood and Carlsbad, NM died at the De Smet Memorial Hospital in De Smet, S.D. on Monday January 6, 2003. Funeral Services were held at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in De Smet, S.D. on Tuesday. He was born on October 20, 1962 to Victor and Estella (Sandoval) Chavez. He grew up and attended school at Moriarty, NM, graduating from Moriarty High School in 1983. He lived in Albuquerque until 1986 when he moved to Carlsbad to live with his sister, Susan McGehee. While living in Carlsbad he lived and worked at the CARC Farm until he moved with Susan to De Smet, S.D. in June of 2001. Gerald was quick to make friends with his bubbly personality, charming smile and easy going manner. He was Assistant Bakery Chef at Wards Store and Bakery in De Smet where he made many friends in the community. The town was truly blessed for having known him. Among survivors who are grateful for having shared in his life are his mother, Estella Chavez of Edgewood, NM; brothers, Lenny (Janice) Chavez of Edgewood, NM and Luis Chavez of Stanley, NM; sisters, Susan McGehee, his guardian sister, of De Smet, S.D., Patsy (Felipe) Garcia of Edgewood, NM and Nadine Chavez and friend, Fidencio Francia of Edgewood, NM; sister-in-law, Becky Chavez; nephew, Steve Chavez and niece, Tracy (Ryan) Schoenfelder of De Smet, S.D. and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Victor; brother, David; and brother-in-law, Jesse McGehee. Gerald was a source of joy and inspiration and will be forever missed. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary. A Funeral Service will be on Thursday morning at 10:00 a.m. place to be announced. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews Isaac Garcia, Steve Chavez, Alex Garcia, Patrick Pachta, Jimmy Pachta, Victor Chavez and Chuck (Chavez) Alexander. Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces Tracy Schoenfelder, Tammy Sue Chavez, Tita Chavez, Jessica Satter, Victoria Valdez, Beverly Chavez and Loretta McLaughlin.
