Adams -- Jessie C. Adams, 76, of Albuquerque passed away on January 3, 2003. Born to David and Anna Grace Nicholson on February 3, 1926, she was the third of five children. She moved to Albuquerque in 1962 from Cleveland, OH. She worked for Sparton Southwest from 1962 - 1979. In 1979, she moved to Tampa, FL. In 1993, she moved back to Albuquerque. She is survived by sons, David S. Scarpo and Charles Dale Adams, both of Albuquerque. Mike D. Eleas, whom she considered her third son, also of Albuquerque; niece, Carolyn Johnson and family of Albuquerque; nephews, Sam Faraone and family of El Paso, TX, Dennis Ball and family of Woodstock, GA, and James Ball and family of Cleveland, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David Nicholson and James Nicholson; sisters, Doris Faraone and Catherine Ball. A Memorial Service will be held on January 9, 2003 at Holiday Park Church of the Nazarene 11435 Montgomery Blvd. NE, at 7:30 p.m.

Bell -- Ione M. Bell, 82 of Fort Sumner, NM died Monday, January 06, 2003 at the Guadalupe Medical Center in Santa Rosa, NM following an illness. Ione was born February 7, 1920 in Fort Sumner to the home of F.C. Baker and the former Zetta Jane Coats. She began school at Fort Sumner before moving with her family to California where she grew up. Ione married William"Bill" Bell on November 8, 1935 in Fort Sumner. She studied nursing in Albuquerque, NM and worked as a nurse's aide at Kirtland Air Force Base for several years. She later worked in a doctor's office in Albuquerque. Ione later worked for 15 years as a secretary at an Albuquerque Animal Clinic, and as a buyer for Fedway (now Dillards) for nine years. She and her husband operated a service station and garage in Albuquerque for many years. Following her husbands death in 1989, she made her home in Fort Sumner in December of 1991. Ione and Bill volunteered for several years at Coyote State Park in Guadalupita, NM. They were members of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Posse where Ione served as president for five terms; a past member of the Bernalillo County Extension Club, Board of Girl Scouts, and member of Tumbleweed Travel R.V. Club and a lifetime member of Good Sams. Ione was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner. She was preceded in death by her husband William"Bill" Bell on December 26, 1989; a son, Ricky Spillers in 1973; grandson, Jonathan"Bart" Bell in 1992; and a brother, Johnny Drake. Survivors include a son, John William Bell of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Betty Jane Howse and husband, James of Los Lunas, NM; six grandchildren, Donnie Howse, Jim Hussin, Christine Schuster, John David Bell, To-Hona Bell, and Jeffery Clarence Bell; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren also survive along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2003 from the First United Methodist Church in Fort Sumner, NM with Rev. Monty Leavell officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at Fort Sumner Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Chavez Funeral Home 804 N. Fifth Street in Fort Sumner, NM.

Bowlin -- Robert"Bob" Bowlin, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1963, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Luna Bowlin of Albuquerque, whom he married on September 3, 1938 in Dresden, TN; children, Brenda Bowlin Brown of Alvin, TX, Gary Bowlin and wife, Sandra of Knoxville, TN and Cheryl Eagan of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kelli JoLynn Brown Crespo and husband, Gabriel, Lauren Bowlin Prince and husband, Matt, twins, Brooke and Brent Bowlin, Lindsey Eagan and Brandon Eagan; three great-grandchildren, Caeden and Bryson Crespo Brown and Owen Prince; brother, Billy Bowlin and wife, Pauline of Memphis, TN; and sisters, Eunia Mae Henderson of Jackson, TN and Marjorie Parrish and husband, Billy of South Fulton, TN. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Roy Brown; brother, Gilbert Bowlin; and sisters, Winnie Freeman, Nell Shelton and Lyndell Ward. Branch -- Rita Baca Branch, age 80, beloved mother, grandmother and sister was called home to be with the Lord our Savior, Friday, January 3, 2003 in Torrance, CA. Rita was born in Santa Rosa, NM to the late Atanacio and Maria Baca; and was a resident of Torrance, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry L. Branch. She is survived by her loving children, Royce Branch and wife Maureen, and Kathy White and husband, Mark; three granddaughters, Lori Branch, Traci Branch, and Lisa Hughey; and two great-grandsons, Jacob and Zachary Hughey all of California. Also surviving are two brothers, Manuel Baca and wife, Portana, Louie Baca and wife, Rosalie both of Albuquerque; three sisters, Celina (Sally) Aragon, Natalie Chavez both of Albuquerque, and Mellie Woffard and husband, Tracy of Grants, NM; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Rita will be greatly missed by her loving family and by those who knew and loved her. Chavez -- Gerald"Teenie" Anthony Chavez, age 40 of De Smet, S.D. formerly of Edgewood and Carlsbad, NM died at the De Smet Memorial Hospital in De Smet, S.D. on Monday January 6, 2003. Funeral Services were held at the St. Thomas Catholic Church in De Smet, S.D. on Tuesday. He was born on October 20, 1962 to Victor and Estella (Sandoval) Chavez. He grew up and attended school at Moriarty, NM, graduating from Moriarty High School in 1983. He lived in Albuquerque until 1986 when he moved to Carlsbad to live with his sister, Susan McGehee. While living in Carlsbad he lived and worked at the CARC Farm until he moved with Susan to De Smet, S.D. in June of 2001. Gerald was quick to make friends with his bubbly personality, charming smile and easy going manner. He was Assistant Bakery Chef at Wards Store and Bakery in De Smet where he made many friends in the community. The town was truly blessed for having known him. Among survivors who are grateful for having shared in his life are his mother, Estella Chavez of Edgewood, NM; brothers, Lenny (Janice) Chavez of Edgewood, NM and Luis Chavez of Stanley, NM; sisters, Susan McGehee, his guardian sister, of De Smet, S.D., Patsy (Felipe) Garcia of Edgewood, NM and Nadine Chavez and friend, Fidencio Francia of Edgewood, NM; sister-in-law, Becky Chavez; nephew, Steve Chavez and niece, Tracy (Ryan) Schoenfelder of De Smet, S.D. and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Victor; brother, David; and brother-in-law, Jesse McGehee. Gerald was a source of joy and inspiration and will be forever missed. Davis -- Robert Bennett Davis, 59, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque on December 22, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 8, 1943, in Jacksonville, Florida, but his childhood was spent in Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1955 the family moved to Midland, Texas. Bob attended Southern Methodist University on a basketball/baseball scholarship and received a Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies in 1964. He earned a juris doctor degree with honors from SMU's Dedman School of Law in 1967. Based primarily in California, Bob worked variously as an attorney, muscian-artist manager and corporate executive from 1967 to 1995. He was Vice President of MCA Records, Inc., Universal City, California, 1974-1976 and President of Riva Records, Inc., Los Angeles, 1981-1984. Bob specialized in artist development and career direction for young recording groups and solo musicians, including Grammy Award winners (John Cougar Mellencamp and Tanya Tucker). From 1996 to 2002 Bob was proprietor of Robert Davis Management, a music entertainment management and consulting firm. Bob was a certified secondary social studies teacher, a driver operations trainer and safety instructor for SuperShuttle, Inc., and a lifelong athlete. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ruth (nee Winn) Davis. Robert is survived by his wife, Susan Wilkinson Davis, Albuquerque, New Mexico; daughter, Shannon Street, husband, Shane; and granddaughters, Kaitlyn and Gracee, Austin, Texas; daughter, Jodie Langhorne, husband, Jason; and grandsons, Ashton and Chance, Denton, Texas; step-daughter, Jill Partridge, Phoenix, Arizona; step-son, Tim Partridge; and step-daughter, Molly Cowan, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is also survived by sister, Joanne Osley and husband, Bill; and nieces, Pam and Kim, Highland, Illinois; by sister, Julie Randolph, husband, Ron; and nephew, Frank, Palm Desert, California; and by parents-in-law, Annette and Clark Wilkinson, Midland, Texas. England -- Mildred Balch England, nee Havens, age 101, at rest, Wednesday, January 1, 2003 in Plainfield, Illinois. She was a long time resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, formerly of Topeka, Kansas. Beloved wife of the late Charles E. England and O. Earl Balch. She was preceded in death by one sisters, Eva; and two brothers, Vernon and Charles. She is survived by her nephew, Jack Emery and wife Catherine; and innumerable nieces, nephews, and cousins. She retired from the Santa Fe Railroad Company after a distinguished career of 36 years. She was an 82 year member and Matron of Eastern Star, Helena Chapter #210, and an 80 year member of the Ancient Toltec Rite, both of Topeka, KS. In Albuquerque she was a long standing member of the First Presbyterian Church having served as a past Deacon and a Helpline volunteer. Additional affiliations included Daughters of the Nile and Alhaydaiya Committee, Shriners Group Honored Ladies, and the Pilot Club where she was a Past President and District Governor, all organizations of Albuquerque. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 10, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Fedor -- John L. Fedor, 79, resident of Albuquerque and Estancia, NM since 1978 passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 5, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janet M.; daughters, Margo Holzey and Gail Holcomb; step-children, Tina Kannard, William Swansinger, Sandra Larupe and Bruce Swansinger; grandchildren, Paul Lindow, deceased, Brandy Freechack and Abe Labadie; great-grandchildren, Brianna and Christine Labadie, and Mercedez Swansinger. He was born and raised in Twinsburg, Ohio with his siblings, Frank, Carl, Abbey, Steve, Joe his twin, Marge and Betty, all deceased, Ed of Roswell, NM and Bill in MO. He began his three year stint with the U.S. Army's 1st armored Div. under Gen. Patton as a tank Driver. The first thing he did when discharged, was buy his Harley Davidson, his love. Being a farm boy and learning mechanics and welding, he was a most versatile and adept man. There was nothing he could not do, repair or make. Crosses adorn churches in Ohio, wrought iron railings, gates every where. He built, installed the inner workings of the frozen food operation for Stouffers new plant in Solon, OH in the 70's. He could tell you the size of anything within an inch just by looking. Needed something made or fixed? He'd say"No Problem." Need a tool for a job and there was none? He'd make one. He loved his family, dancing, camping, his Harley, his dog, Buddy, and puttering around in his barn. All who knew him loved and respected him. He was always there to help anyone in need. Oh, how he is missed. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, January 7, 2003, 7:00 p.m. at San Antonio Catholic Church in Tajique. A Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, January 8, 2003, 10:30 a.m. with Father Anthony Martinez officiating. Full military honors will follow the Mass. Goodwin -- Steven H. Goodwin, 49, a resident of Albuquerque for 41 years, died Friday, January 3, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Bobbi, and daughter, Megan, of the family home. Mr. Goodwin attended Highland High School. He was the owner and operator of Posh Limited for 15 years. Mr. Goodwin was a member of Grace Church and of the Civitan Club. Gutierrez -- Teodoro"Apa" Gutierrez, 93, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away in his sleep at the Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque on Monday morning, January 6, 2003. Apa was a sheepherder most of his life and was also a cook for several restaurants throughout the Albuquerque area. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Mary J. Gallegos; grandson, George Gallegos; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Gallegos, George Romero, and Samantha Gallegos. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Lorenzo Gallegos Jr., Danny Gallegos and wife, Barbara, Rosemary Romero and husband, George, Ronnie Gallegos, David Gallegos and wife, Nadine, Joann Chavez and husband, Larry, Patricia Gallegos and Annmarie Ayala; 23 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephews. All services will take place at Romero Funeral Home. Hoffman -- D.E."Huck" Hoffman, 72, of Sierra Vista, AZ. Passed away Friday, January 3, 2003. Born November 21, l930, Keyser, West Virginia, he was the son of John D. and Frances Fromhart Hoffman. He attended Albuquerque High and the University of New Mexico. He grew up in Albuquerque, and served in the U.S. Navy from l951 to l955 aboard the LST 1156. He was a member of Temple Lodge 6 Master Mason 32nd degree Scottish Rite and Ballut Abyad Shirner. Retired owner and operator of Duke City Auto Supply in Albuquerque, Hoffman Enterprises in Webster, NC and other business ventures. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Hilda Hoffman of Sierra Vista; daughters, Brenda G. Hoffman, Albuquerque, NM, Susan K Hoffman, Webster, NC; grandchildren, Joshua T. Paiz and Rhonda S. Johnston -- Jane Ann, 42, a 38-year-resident of Albuquerque, passed away January 3, 2003. Ms. Johnston was born March 16, 1960 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Keranen -- Tauno E. Keranen, 79, a resident of Cedar Crest, died on Monday, January 6, 2003. Tauno was born and raised in Ironwood, MI and moved to Albuquerque in 1947 where he worked at Rio Grande Steel. Mirabal -- Francene Mirabal joined our Lord and Savior on January 3, 2003. Francene grew up in Grants, NM. She was a local businesswoman who worked in the Albuquerque, El Paso and Phoenix area. For many years she was a Dance instructor for Tiffany and Fred Astair Dance Studio. Her passions were dancing, scuba diving, camping and fishing. She loved to watch football and she loved her cat, Chata. She is survived by her mother, Elfi Mirabal; sister, Crystal Sadowski; nephews, Alex and Zachary; brother, Dennis Mirabal and wife, Kari; nephew, Joshua; and niece, Megan. She was preceded in death by her father, Dennis Mirabal. She is also survived by her mother's fiance, Perry Chase; and other close family and friends who loved her dearly. Francene will be remembered as a beautiful, loving and an incredibly special person. She loved life and lived everyday to the fullest. She touched many hearts and will live on in our memories. We will find peace and joy in knowing that Francene has joined our Lord, Jesus Christ and that someday we will see her again. Services will be held today at 10:00 a.m. at the Believers Center of Albuquerque located at 320 Waterfall Dr. SE (on Central east of Tramway).

Nesbit -- Sarah A. Nesbit, 86, a resident of Albuquerque for 11 years, died Sunday, January 5, 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Connie Kallsen and husband, Marv of Albuquerque; son, Dale Nesbit and wife, Julie of Rifle, CO; grandchildren, Craig Kallsen, Kris Donahue, Sheri Call and Keri Nesbit; and five great-granddaughters which were the light of her life. Mrs. Nesbit was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Nesbit. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Powell -- Mr. William G. Powell, age 65, a longtime resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully on January 3, 2003. Mr. Bill fought a long and courageous battle against lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Nikki Powell; three devoted children, Brenda, William and Susan; his favorite brother-in-law, John Wydra; mother-in-law, Julia Trotter; aunt, Marianna McCuen; and nephews, Jeff Page and Todd Wydra. He dearly loved his furry companions, Sally and Mollie. Mr. Bill also is survived by his many friends and coworkers at Costco and Sara Lee Bakery who truly enriched his life. After 38 years of loyal and totally dedicated service, he retired from Sara Lee Bakery last year. Bill will be remembered as a kind and caring person who was best known for his easy going nature, sense of humor and a big smile. There was not a mean bone in his body. Cremation has taken place and the family extends an invitation for all friends and acquaintances to attend a celebration of his life on Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at Amberly Suites Hotel, 7620 Pan American Frwy, NE, between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The family wishes to thank the Lovelace Hospice for their compassion and care, and especially the nurses and techs at the hospice unit.

Ross -- Helen K. Ross, 95, a resident of Albuquerque for 64 years, died Monday, January 6, 2003. She is survived by her son, Charles Ross and wife, Carmel and their children, Frank and wife, Claire; Sandra, Patrick and wife, Sherry, Albert and wife, Michele; and Katherine and husband, Marlon, all of San Jose, CA; daughter, Louellen Baldoni and husband, Robert and their children, Mary and husband, Jeff; Anne, John and wife, Lucia; Joe and Gina; son, Ronald Ross and wife, Jane and their children, Michael and wife, Kelly; and Katie, all of Albuquerque; and 20 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by her husband Carl A. Ross in 1949; and brother, Charles Daggs. She graduated St. Anthony¯s Nursing School in 1928 in Denver, CO, and worked as a registered nurse in Denver until 1935. Mrs. Ross married Carl in 1934. They moved to New Jersey and in 1938 the family moved to Albuquerque. She worked as an RN at St. Joseph Hospital for one year and then worked at Santa Fe Railroad Hospital, retiring in 1972 as a supervisor. Mrs. Ross and her husband were founding members of Our Lady of Fatima Parish. Rosary will be recited Thursday, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE. Rowe -- Beatrice"Bea"Burke Rowe, 91, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, January 4, 2003 at The Montebello of Albuquerque. She was born in Cleveland, OK on August 11, 1911 to James and Olive McMullen Burke. She was preceded in death by her husband, Espie C. Rowe of Corpus Christi, TX. Until 1979, she was one of the leading couturiers for the Buccaneer Days Court in Corpus Christi, Texas¯ annual celebration. Beatrice was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, TX since 1957. She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Turner Hereford and husband, William of Albuquerque and Mary Anne Sinclair of Corpus Christi, TX. She adored and admired all of her grandchildren, Robert Lawrence Turner, Sharon Kathleen Davidson, Joseph Tolson Wray, Christopher Burke Wray, and Katherine Marie Minor. Her extra special blessings were her ten great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Minor, Jennifer and Trevor Turner, Derek Wray, Ashley, Savannah and Alannah Davidson, and Hanna, Kaleb and Nathan Wray. Sholer -- William J. Sholer age 76, of Moore, OK was born October 11, 1925 in Prague, OK to William N. and Myrtle Sholer. William graduated from the Oklahoma University School of Law and was a retired Attorney having practiced for 35 years in Albuquerque where he was a longtime resident. William served his country in the U.S. Navy serving in WWII. He was active in the First United Methodist Church in Albuquerque where he had taught High School Sunday School. William poured his life and soul into Boy Scouts. He was awarded the Silver Beaver and the Silver Antelope. William passed away on January 6, 2003 in Oklahoma City, OK. Trujillo -- Eliza Anaya Trujillo, 93, died Saturday, January 4, 2003. She was born in Puerto de Luna, NM, and resided most of her life in Albuquerque. The last few years she had lived with her daughter, Alice in Sapello, NM. Ulibarri -- Dr. Sabine Reyes Ulibarri, 83, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 4, 2003. He was the son of Sabiniano Reyes Ulibarri and Simonita Gonzalez Ulibarri of Tierra Amarilla, NM. Humanist, hispanist, poet, author, professor, brother, grandfather, friend and mentor; he will be missed by the many whose lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Connie; son, Carlos and wife, Mary and their sons, Daniel and Victor; sisters, Simonita (Jomo) Trujillo of Santa Fe and Mary Jo (Faffi) Kiser of Amarillo, TX; and his many loved nephews and nieces. Sabine is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alfonso and Albert Ulibarri. Born in Santa Fe on September on September 21, 1919, he grew up on his father¯s ranch and began his education in Tierra Amarilla. Following the premature death of his parents, he began teaching in the Rio Arriba County Schools to support himself and his younger brothers and sisters. He moved to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico as a freshman in the fall of 1937, where he met and married Connie Limon. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served from 1942-1945 as a ball-turret gunner in a B-17 stationed in Wellingborough England. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, U.S. Air Force Medal (with three oak leaf clusters) for flying in 35 combat missions over Europe. Ulibarri returned to UNM and received his BA in Spanish Literature in 1947 and MA in 1949; he completed his education with a PhD in Romance Languages from UCLA in 1959. Uli, as he was affectionately known, then returned to a distinguished career as a professor of Hispanic Language, Culture and Literature at UNM, also serving in a variety of administrative posts for the University and professional and cultural organizations. He wrote, lectured and traveled with family, friends and students. He received numerous awards, including the Governor¯s Award for Excellence and Achievement in Literature for his creative work. His favored medium was the short story, which he wrote in both Spanish and English. He was a pioneer in the field of bilingual editioning, and his stories of life in his beloved northern New Mexico have become favorites of English- and Spanish-speaking readers and students of both languages alike. He did the best he could at what he loved the most, and devoted himself to his chosen work. Sabine lived a long, eventful and satisfying life and generously shared his experience with others. Varela -- Juanito Lorenzo Cordova Varela passed away on January 6, 2003. He is survived by his parents, Juan Varela and Veronica Cordova; and several other family members.
