HOMET, MARY Remember to laugh every day, especially on this day, New Year's Day, which would have been her 74th birthday; that is what Mary Homet would want us to do. Every day a celebration of something: the joy of music, the delight of food, the whimsy of creating, the beauty of decorating, the reward of gardening, the adventure of books or the freedom of cursing (which she was trying to quit). And so we set forth, to enjoy this life we have, with the echo of her laughter in our hearts: her daughter, Heather, her son-in-law, George, and her grandson, the apple of her eye, Ryan. Mary set an admirable example for us as an independent, strong woman, who pursued a lifelong career in Occupational Therapy, pioneering new ground in the Side-by-Side Program at McCollum Elementary School. She was a fierce advocate for her students and delighted in seeing them years later working and thriving in the community. In her retirement, she enjoyed continuing her lifelong love of playing the piano, quilting and crafting, traveling to Paris, making new friends and cherishing ones from her childhood in Hermosa Beach, learning yoga and Tai Chi and continuing her lifelong love affair with butter (never once cheating with margarine). Though she is gone since December 18, 2014, her passion for life remains strong in the memories of those she loved. We know she is laughing as she reads this and perhaps dancing the tango, finally, or at least watching a better final episode of Dancing with the Stars. In lieu of flowers, which she loved, but didn't really like receiving, she asked that memorial donations be made to the National Down Syndrome Society (www.ndss.org) as a continuing gift to the children who gave her years of joy.
