ORTIZ, ANNA L. 101, a resident of Albuquerque, NM and formerly of Las Vegas, NM, passed away in Albuquerque, NM on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco Lopez de Baca and Barbara Sena de Rivera; her husband, Arthur Ortiz; a son, Carl Anthony Ortiz; four sisters: Mary Blea, Lucia Gurule, Eliza Lopez, and Petrita Lopez; a brother, Augustin Lopez; special nieces: Barbara Clements, Vangie Adams; nephews: Carlos and Frank Gurule; and great aunts: Lucia and Ellen Sena. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen L. Ortiz of Albuquerque, NM; a sister-in-law, Tillie Ortiz of Las Vegas, NM; Nieces: Frances Chavez, Carmen Ward, and Barbara Kent all of Denver, CO Pauline Labonte and husband Al of Nashua, New Hampshire; special grand niece, Elizabeth Withers and grand nephews Patrick Withers, and James Clawson all of Colorado; a special grand-niece Shelly Cements of Nebraska and her extended family of Romero, Lopez, Ortiz nephews and cousins; special friends, Freddy Baca and John Singletary, Mary Teresa Granados, Agnes Massaroni, Addie Encinias, and Mary Ann Lenhof. She was born in Las Vegas, NM on August 31, 1913. She is a descendent from the legendary Romero family of San Miguel County and from Bernardino Sena and Tomas Sena through great grandfather, Timoteo Sena. Bernardino and Tomas Sena were the mayordomos of the Confradia of Nuestra Senora del Rosario La Conquistadora for 44 years. She was educated here in Las Vegas and attended New Mexico Highlands University. She taught three years in a one room schoolhouse in Trujillo, NM, three years at North Public School and one year at the Immaculate Conception grade school. She left teaching to marry Arthur L. Ortiz, a descendent of Nicolas Ortiz III who came to New Mexico with the De Vargas colonists in 1694. Arthur established Art's Food Market and after a few years Anna joined him and for 20 years was the buyer for all but two departments. Arthur and Anna devoted several years to raising funds for Our Lady of Sorrows Grade School so children and the children of Las Vegas would have comfortable classrooms. Art passed away on January 16, 1976, shortly after he sold his business. Anna retired by soon joined the Immaculate Conception Altar Society and served several terms as President. Her greatest love for the next 18 years was raising flowers and creating floral arrangements for the special religious services at Immaculate conception Church. Christmas, Holy Week, Easter and Thanksgiving were her favorites. She also created floral arrangements for weekly masses throughout the year. She was a founding member of the Catholic Daughters of American Court 1301 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. A rosary will be recited on Monday, December 8, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. at the Risen Savior Catholic Church, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE Albuquerque, NM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, NM. Father George V. Salazar will be celebrate the Mass. The entombment will follow in the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in Albuquerque, NM at 2:30 p.m. The family has requested memorials be made to the Building Fund at the Immaculate Conception Church., 811 Sixth Street, Las Vegas, NM 87701.
