HURT, MARY CATHERINE died on July 2, 2014 in Albuquerque at the age of 89. She was born in Erwin, TN on August 30, 1924, the daughter of Robert Brown Darden and Lois Avant Darden. As a young child she moved with her family to Clayton, NM, then later to Albuquerque where she graduated from Albuquerque High School. In 1946 she earned her bachelor's degree in history and sociology from the University of New Mexico, where she was a member of Mortar Board, Phi Alpha Theta, and the first female editor of the Daily Lobo newspaper. She earned master's degrees in social work and in library science from the University of Chicago and Indiana University, respectively, and spent most of her working life as a social worker. At the University of Chicago she met her husband, Wesley Robert Hurt of Albuquerque, who preceded her in death in 1997. Mary and Wes lived in Vermillion, SD and Bloomington, IN, while he was a professor at the University of South Dakota and Indiana University. She enjoyed traveling with her archaeologist husband for research in Brazil, Colombia, and Uruguay. She was also an avid reader and historian with her own diverse interests. After returning to live in Albuquerque in 1990, she collaborated with long-time friend and co-worker Lillian Dolde to write That's My Bank!-a history of the Albuquerque National Bank published in 1996. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Darden, and a sister, Patricia Lloyd. She is survived by her sister, Carolyn Sprengeler of Littleton, CO; her son Stephen Hurt and his wife, Linda Hurt, of Marshfield, MA; daughter Rosalind Sterling and her husband, Brian Sterling, of Greenbelt, MD; daughter Teresa Hurt and her husband, Lawrence Blind, of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren, Alison Hurt, Eric Hurt, Evan Sterling, Adam Sterling, Wesley Blind, William Blind, and Alexandra Blind; and one great-grandson, Gregory O'Connor. Interment of her ashes will take place at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley R.
