CONWAY, HAROLD ROYAL Born June 17, 1922 in Serene, Weld County, Colorado (better known as the Columbine Coal Mine Camp; about 3 miles southeast of Erie, CO), died August 1, 2013, in Albuquerque, NM, age 91. He attended grade school in Mount Harris and Lafayette, CO and two years of high school in Louisville, CO. Harold received his GED from the New Mexico Education Association. He completed the Dale Carnegie Course. He worked one winter at the Black Diamond Mine in Lafayette, Colorado, then worked at Western States Cutlery in Boulder prior to, and after, serving in the Navy during WWII. His Naval service included assignments to US Naval Training Communications School at the University of Wisconsin (Madison), and specialty training as a member of Naval 11th Beach Battalion. He served aboard the USS Grafton (APA109) in the Pacific, with an occupying assignment to end the war in Sasebo, Japan. He was a Life Member of the American Legion of Carlsbad, NM and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lafayette, CO. Harold married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Irene Jenkins, of Louisville, CO in September 1942. In January 1948, the family relocated to Carlsbad, NM, where Harold worked 14.5 years in potash mining, farming, and local area business ventures. In 1963, Harold began 20 years of employment with the New Mexico Employment Security Commission, retiring in 1983 from a top administrative position. Harold and Mildred were long time members of the Rocky Mountain Climbers Club of Eldora, CO. Mildred preceded Harold in death in July 2009. Harold and Mildred had four children: Donald (Barbara) of Pueblo West, CO; Doris (Marshall) Boerio of Little Elm, TX; James (Terri) of Albuquerque; and Earl (Barbara) of Albuquerque. Harold leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a dear friend, Bobby Mayes. A funeral will be held Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas.
