C' DE BACA, NAZARIO (NICK) Nazario C' de Baca, age 96, passed away at home in Bernalillo, NM on July 31, 2013. He was born in La Cienega, NM to Manuelita (Gallegos) and Tomas on November 12, 1916. The youngest of seven children, he grew up on the family's irrigated farm in La Cienega. After finishing eighth grade in La Cienega's two-room schoolhouse, he lived with an uncle in Pena Blanca to attend high school, graduating in 1936 from Santa Fe High. He then earned a degree in agronomy and soils at New Mexico State University in 1940, and in 1950, a Master's Degree in rural sociology from Michigan State. He was a proud World War II veteran who served under General George Patton in the 11th Armored Division. He traveled through France and Belgium, ending up in Austria along the Danube River. After his discharge, he briefly returned to New Mexico as an assistant Extension Agent in Mora County. He married Consuelo "Connie" Martinez in 1946. Nazario worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture for over 28 years. He set up agricultural extension services and youth programs in developing countries - Bolivia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, Jamaica, and Sudan, Africa. He ended his USDA career with a 10-year stint in Washington, DC, where he designed training and coordinated exchange programs, specializing in Latin America. In 1972, he and Consuelo retired to their home in Albuquerque, NM, to be near their three sons, Daniel, Robert and Nick, who were born in three different countries. Consuelo passed away in 1993. In July 1994, Nazario married Sabina (Griego) Boulton of Santa Fe, NM. They had originally met in 1937 through his sister, Melinda Gonzales of La Cienega, who was attending nurses training with Sabina at the time. Nazario and Sabina made their home in Bernalillo. Nazario was very active and involved with family, church and community. He was the Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics in 1999. Always remembering his own struggles to get through college, he established a charitable gift annuity with his alma mater, New Mexico State University, which provides support to Hispanic students studying agriculture or home economics. "I attribute my long life to activity" says Nazario. "Every day, I live like I'm going to live forever. I don't live from day to day. Every day you should do something that is good, that contributes to your life. You shouldn't let a day go by when you don't do something constructive, at least one thing." There are many stories that illustrate his perseverance, mental toughness, compassion, and powerful resilience. He lived a long, fulfilled life full of adventure and purpose. With Nazario's passing, we've lost another of America's greatest generation and a true gentleman. Nazario was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Tomas, Conrado, Albertano, Celina Lucero, Mary Ulibarri, and Melinda Gonzales; first wife, Consuelo; son, Daniel; and grandson, Nicholas. He is survived by his wife, Sabina; sons, Robert (Lesly) and Nick (Julie); grandson, Mike; step-children, Georgia Pearson (Ted), Ellen, John (Wrenn), Anita Dupree (Jon), Martha, Mary Kay, Rita Wolfe (Gary), Frances, and Mary Jo Carrion; 17 step- grandchildren; and 30 step-great- grandchildren. Rosary will be recited Sunday, August 4, 2013, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 301 S. Camino Del Pueblo, Bernalillo. Friends may visit beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., also at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Interment will take place at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Nazario's name to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo, or your favorite charity. O LORD JESUS CHRIST, you are the resurrection and the life. You have promised that whoever believes in you even if he dies will have life everlasting. May this sacred promise comfort us in our sadness, and bring the soul of your servant departed the fullness of the reward you have for us after death. O savior of the world, reassure us in our belief that death is not an end to life, but rather a change by which we enter a life of perfect joy in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. COLLINGE, ANDREA Otherwise know to her friends as "Annie" sharp shooter, passed away on July 25, 2013, as a result of complications from an ATV accident. Andrea had a love and passion for dancing, shooting guns, riding horses, and otherwise enjoying life. She was a world-class skier and the first women in Canada to drive "formula ford" racing cars in competition and win. She was also an avid trout fisher, a PADI scuba dive master, a wind surfer, and had a passion for training and coaching people to ride horses. She competed in numerous horse endurance races and her goal was to compete in the Tevis Cup and eventually make it to the endurance race in Saudi Arabia. Andrea was part owner and operator of A C Engineering Enterprises, LLC, an electrical engineering firm based in Albuquerque, NM. Andrea was born in Switzerland and grew up there, and eventually moved to Montreal, Canada where she worked for McClain Hunter as a journalist for an oil and gas publication magazine, which enabled her to travel extensively all over the world. In her spare time she enjoyed skiing in places like up-state New York, Vermont (Stowe, Jay Peak), and in Europe (Zurs, Austria was her favorite). In the late 1980's Andrea left Montreal for Rhode Island where she learned how to scuba dive, wind surf, and sail boats. Eventually her love of the mountains and skiing drove her south west to Taos, New Mexico. She would recall many fond memories of "skiing excursions in the American West" as she liked to call it. She lived in Taos for a number of years, teaching and training friends and native Taos Pueblo Indians to ride horses. In her spare time she would help herd cattle in the mountains of northern New Mexico. Andrea was extremely hard working, lived every day as if it were her last, and was never afraid to take chances. She was always trying to find ways to help people less fortunate than her. She was an inspiration to all that knew and loved her. We will miss her dearly. She leaves behind her husband, Fred J. (Bud) Telck; her dog Natasha; her son James Collinge; and grandkids Stephanie and Christopher of Austin, Texas. Someone who was always willing to help, and asked nothing in return for the favors he gave. Forever I will be grateful for the lessons I've learned, the memories I've had and the adventures we took together. Rest in peace Dad, you will be missed, but never forgotten." ORTIZ, ELAUTERIO "LARRY" On Saturday July 27, 2013, we lost our beloved husband, our father, grandfather and our mentor. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Ida; and son Leonard, wife Rebecca, and their daughter Claire; and son Rico, wife Angela, and their daughters Miquela and Marisa. Larry was born in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, in 1935 where he grew up and met his future wife Ida. After his high school graduation, he joined the United States Air Force. While serving in the Air Force, Larry and Ida were married in 1958. After four years of distinguished service in the air force, he was honorably discharged. After a brief stop in California, Larry and his family moved back to Albuquerque where he began working for various agencies in the United States Government. While working, he attended the University of New Mexico, where he attained a B.A. in Architecture and graduated Cum Laude in 1976. After 30 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1990 from the U.S. Department of Energy, Albuquerque Field Office. Larry touched many lives in his 78 years, whether through work, involvement in the Knights of Columbus, as a baseball coach or as a neighbor or friend always offering a helping hand. He was always a strong role model and well respected by his family, many relatives and friends who looked up to him as a mentor and trusted friend. Most importantly, he believed in God and family and was a devout family man, always putting God and his family first. Though he will be greatly missed for his many contributions, strength, and admirable qualities, we all gain comfort in knowing that his spirit is with the Lord and has been freed from the horrible disease that imprisoned him in his body for so many years. Larry, we love you and we will miss you everyday of our lives. We will carry your love and your spirit in our hearts until we join you again. The family will be holding a private service in honor of Larry's life. TAUB, JAMES M. Just short of his 95th birthday, our adored father left his cares behind and joined our mother, his most beloved wife, Sally. They were married for 65 years and can now pick up where they left off just a few years ago. Dad was born and raised in Cleveland, OH. He earned his BS from Case School of Applied Sciences and returned to Case for night school to earn his MS in Metallurgical Engineering. For two years he worked for Republic Steel Corp, then returned to Case to work in a research and development program. In 1944, he was asked to come to Los Alamos, NM for a top-secret government program - "with no info given!" The program turned out to be the Manhattan Project. He became group leader of CMB-6 for the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL, now LANL) and held that position for 29 years. He retired in 1981 after approximately 37 years with the lab. In 1963 he received a letter from President Kennedy authorizing the Atomic Energy Commission's recommendation that he (Dad) be awarded the prestigious Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award. He was the first metallurgical engineer to receive that recognition. He was also a Fellow of the American Society for Metals (ASM). But maybe most importantly, he was greatly admired and respected at LASL, earning nicknames such as Sunny Jim and Gentleman Jim. He retired to Tucson with Sally where they enjoyed many, many years together, traveled extensively and volunteered their time. They had season tickets to the opera, symphony and theatre. Dad's interests included music, tennis, golf (with TWO holes-in-one - the first at age 80!), hiking, and dancing with Sally. He loved to drive his old Buick, and hated computers!!! He was incredibly smart, compassionate, supportive and engaged in whatever held his interest. He was slow to anger and quick to laugh. Dad was a very kind man who believed in treating everyone with respect and, to the end, had a marvelous, wicked, dry sense of humor. He is survived by those he describes as two wonderful daughters "most of the time" - Janet Taub Buckland and husband David Buckland, and Judy Taub and partner Allison Newman. Gentleman Jim has left the building. He will be forever missed. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a favorite humanitarian, liberal, environmental, medical, or animal welfare charity.

THOMAS, GERALD W. Husband, father, patriot, hero, author, historian, friend, and colleague -- died peacefully on July 31, 2013, at the age of 94. Former President of NMSU. Gerald was born on a ranch on Medicine Lodge Creek, Small, Idaho on July 3, 1919, to Daniel Waylett and Mary Evans Thomas. During summers, Gerald was employed by the Salmon and Targhee National Forests where he was working for the Forest Service when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Soon after, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a carrier-based Naval Torpedo pilot. During the war, Gerald flew a Grumman AvengerTBM from three aircraft carriers - the USS Ranger, the USS Bunker Hill and the USS Essex. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of Operation and survived a splashdown in the South China Sea which he chronicled in his book, "Torpedo Squadron Four, A Cockpit View of World War II." He was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Air Medals and the Presidential Unit Citation. Gerald married Jean Ellis on June 2, 1945, and they their passion and love for each other continued for the next 67 years. WYLDER, EDITH PERRY passed away July 4th, 2013, at the age of 88. Edith was born to Maude and Beverly Perry, February 15th, 1925. She was preceded in death by her son Phillip Stamm, her sister Betty Clark, her nieces Elizabeth and Susan Clark and her husband of 40 years, Delbert Wylder. She is survived by her son Paul and grandson Dario Stamm; stepsons Steven and William Wylder and their families; and her nephew Robert Clark. She is also survived by her former husband and father of her two sons, William Stamm of Albuquerque. Edith was a dedicated English professor and a devoted literary scholar. Despite her declining health in recent years, she continued to write her second book on the poetry of Emily Dickinson, titled "Talking Between the Rooms", which was to be a study of the poet John Keats' influence on Dickinson and her poetry. Edith's modest yet profound academic career began when she received her M.A. degree from the University of New Mexico in 1949. While raising a family in the countryside of Albuquerque's north valley, she pursued her study of Emily Dickinson's poetry. This research earned her a Ph.D. from UNM in 1964. Edith's book, a provocative interpretation of Dickinson's poems, titled "The Last Face", was published by UNM Press in 1971. The next part of her life was a wonderful journey with her loving husband Deb, also a scholar and professor. Deb and Edith were a team, their academic and social lives blending together to foster a nurturing and inspiring environment for their students. They taught at universities in Utah, Colorado, Minnesota and Kentucky. Many of today's published poets, writers, and scholars attribute their creative writing success the the mentorship of Deb and Edith. A former student of Edith's, now an accomplished author and professor, said of her, "Edith was not my first literature professor, but she was the first one who mattered. I took every course she--and later her husband Deb--offered. I owe most of what is good in my life to both of them. They were brilliant teachers and scholars, the best role models any student who wanted to write and teach could possibly have." In 1989, retiring from Murray State University in Kentucky, Deb and Edith continued their journey and left for New Mexico, back to where their life of love and laughter began. A private memorial service followed by a celebration of her life will be held in Morrison, Illinois on October 20th of this year. Contributions can be sent to the Murray State University Foundation's "Deb and Edith Wylder Creative Writing Scholarship". The address is MSU Office of Development, 200 Heritage Hall, Murray, Ky 42071.
