MITCHELL, MARY H. "POLLY" Our beloved Polly passed away peacefully March 1, 2013 at the age of 86. She was born in Hartford, CT, to Thomas and Elanor Hapgood. As a young girl, she moved with her mother and brother to Santa Fe. After graduating from Smith college, she returned to New Mexico and worked at Los Alamos Labs and married. She lived with her husband and three sons in Glorieta, eventually moving with them to Albuquerque. She worked for the Rehabilitation Center, Inc., as a medical secretary for 25 years and after her retirement, continued volunteering there with the pre-school program because she so enjoyed working and playing with the children. Polly was an avid animal lover, especially horses. In Bloomfield, CT, she got her first horse "Brownie." In Santa Fe, her family lived on a Dude Ranch and she spent many hours riding her horse "Bonnie" in the hills near Pojoaque. Later while attending the San Luis School and was given the responsibility of caring for horses at the school. Polly took on her duties with great enthusiasm and loved riding in the beauty of Colorado. Later in life, Polly took a shine to cats and leaves behind her special kitty "Simba." She loved the birds in the backyard, especially a visiting roadrunner and went as far as to cook it special "meatballs" for dinner every night, as well as feeding tortillas to the ravens and crows. She played a "mean guitar'" and could always get a laugh from her grandsons when she sang "Pistol Packin' Mama" and "There is a Tavern in the Town." She was always engaged in politics and what was happening in the world. We will miss her love, caring, musical talents and lively debates. She is survived by her three sons, Mark Mitchell and David Lowry Mitchell, both of Albuquerque; Matthew Mitchell and wife Stephanie of San Antonio, NM; grandson Thomas Mitchell and partner Tadd Wamester, of Brooklyn, NY; Nicholas Mitchell and wife Laura of West Bend, WI; and great-grandsons Avery and Sawyer Mitchell.
