Dr. Hovda married Ruth Theckla Johnson in 1945 and raised four children (David Allen, Timothy Vere, James Stephen and Elizabeth Ruth). Dr. Hovda then married Elizabeth E. Elliott in 1977. He was a dedicated physician who loved his family and, given his father Myron Hovda was a Methodist Minister, was devoted to the word of God. As a father, his family could always count on him for mentoring and support. As a doctor he was truly a professional, dedicated to the mental well being of others. He often said of his profession that being a psychiatrist was like living 1000 lives since he had the privilege of assisting in many battles associated with mental illnesses suffered by his patients and their corresponding families. Dr. Hovda believed in the dignity of the human being and of the power of prayer. He felt it was a God - Given Right for individuals to have the courage to believe in themselves and to have dignity and feelings of self worth that would allow them to be mentally and spiritually healthy thereby having the opportunity to prosper within their families and to provide important contributors to society. Over the years many patients have expressed their gratitude to Dr. Hovda for his help in the fight against mental disorders. Young psychiatrists over the years have sought his consultation and advice regarding the complex dynamics of treating the troubled mind and battered spirit. Dr. Hovda approached each family and professional experience with confidence, a smile and an appreciation that God's love would guide his word and deeds. His guidance and consultation will be sorely missed. Dr. Hovda passed away due to complications from Parkinson's disease and was surrounded by his son Timothy and his family.
