HORNER -- Ronald "Ron" H. Horner, 85, a resident of Placitas, NM died Thursday, January 27, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol; two sons, Joel Horner and wife, Sharron of Virginia Beach, VA and Marc Horner and wife, Susan of Arvada, CO; two grandchildren, Annelei Matheson and husband, Cody, and Amy Horner; special niece, Sharon Foley and husband Steve Ciotti; and many friends. Ron was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Letha Horner; and one sister Norma Lee Foley. He was born on May 23, 1925 in Wiley, CO and graduated from Wiley High School in 1943. Ron then went into the United States Navy where he proudly served in the Pacific Theater as a radioman, during WWII. After his discharge he went to work for Western Electric where he was a telephone equipment installer. He retired in 1980 as a manager. Ron did consulting in Atlanta, GA, and then he and Carol moved to Santiago, Chile for six years where he wrote a column in an English newspaper and also had a radio program in which he gave the news in English. They then lived in Mexico City for three years until Carol's retirement, at which time they moved to Placitas. He was an avid Toastmaster serving in several different positions at the state and regional level, receiving several prestigious awards and a member of the National Speakers Association. Ron was an enthusiastic ham radio operator, enjoyed working in his workshop creating many different things from exotic woods, international travel, and trains. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at French ~ Wyoming Chapel, Thursday, February 3, 2011, 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Placitas Community Library, 453 Hwy 165, Placitas, NM 87043 in Ron's name.
