BLACK -- Harold Reed Black January 27, 1922 - September 6, 2010, 88, passed away peacefully in his home Monday. He was born the son of D.C. and Arita Stout Black on January 27, 1922 at the mouth of Blacksmith Fork Canyon in Hyrum, Cache County, Utah. Reed obtained his Bachelor's Degree from The Texas College of Mines. He married his sweetheart, Velvia C. (Peggy) Gray Black on December 3, 1943. They shared 67 years of love, companionship and adventure. Reed served proudly in the Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart after he was critically wounded in the Battle of Beek, 20 miles north of Aaken, Germany. After the war, Reed obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Ohio State University College of Law in June 1948 and was admitted to the Ohio State Bar in August 1948. He worked for the U.S. Government Veterans Administration in Mesa, Arizona; Washington D.C.; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Salt Lake City, Utah. Reed was in his 60's when he fulfilled a life-long dream by obtaining a pilot's license. He loved to fly, purchased a Tripacer, and logged many miles. Reed embraced technology and was always learning and broadening his knowledge. He was computer savvy and was at ease using email to keep up with every family member. Reed was a master genealogist and taught many people how to do their genealogy on the computer. After retiring, Reed and Peggy served a church mission in Hawaii. He was an active member in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Reed and Peggy raised nine children; have 48 grandchildren; 99 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; children, Peggy (John) Stevens, Donna (Danny) Allen, Connie (Bruce) Myers, Robert (Marilyn) Black, Linda (Ross) Murray, Rick (Jeanne) Black, Chris (Klea Perkins) Black; son-in-law Cal Cottrell; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Preceded in death by daughter Mary Cottrell; and son Ron Black; grandsons, Daniel Allen and Alan Pack; great-grandsons, Storm and Tiger Hall; great-granddaughter, Janie May Jeppson; siblings, Focha Ricks, Emily Black, Rey Black, Mary Rawlins, Barbara Merritt; and both of his parents. He will be remembered as a courageous, noble patriot, skilled teacher, brilliant and generous legal advisor, and a wonderful, humorous, loving husband and father. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Meldrum Mortuary, 52 N. MacDonald, Mesa, Arizona 85201. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Lehi/Horne Building, 810 E. Lehi Road, Mesa, Arizona. Graveside services and burial will be at approximately 11:00 a.m. at Mesa Cemetery, 1212 N. Center, Mesa, Arizona.
