LOHBECK -- Kurt. On June 9, 2010, Kurt Lohbeck passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and close friends. Kurt had struggled the last several years with emphysema and COPD, which he fought manfully and without complaint. Born in St. Louis, MO in 1942, Kurt, who was an avid Cardinals baseball fan, was the son of Don Lohbeck and Virginia Zussman. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, her son Albert Narath, son Robert Lohbeck (Cheryl), sister Michelle Britt (Paul), and nephew David Watland. Kurt had an adventurous and fascinating life highlighted by time he spent as a radio and television announcer and news director, a congressional consultant to the U.S. House Interior Committee, an aide for then New Mexico Congressman Manuel Lujan, a NM legislator, a CBS war correspondent covering Afghanistan for 10 years during the Soviet invasion, an author (Holy War, Unholy Victory), an expert witness regarding Afghan refugees seeking political asylum, a founder and member of the board of a local bank, founder and president of the regional chapter of the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.), and a member of LA's Magic Castle and London's Magic Circle. His various entrepreneurial ventures included working to help decrease the dangers of landmines, as well as owning a pub, and writing documentaries. He was interested in and involved with a number of political campaigns and candidates in NM and Washington D.C. He and Barbara were intimately involved in fighting Cystic Fibrosis. Well traveled, Kurt has been to many countries, both alone, with family, and with his wife. Kurt and Barbara loved to entertain their many political and artistic friends at their table, preferably with a gourmet meal Kurt prepared himself, served with dessert and a magic trick or two. His bold, multi-faceted, and entertaining personality will be missed by many. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Lohbeck residence on June 27th at 2 PM.
