HOPKINS -- Truman Rhea Hopkins went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing. Truman was born July 30, 1929 in Gladewater, Texas to Johnnie Henry Nathan and Rosa Etta Hopkins. He married Noma Lee Nuckols, the love of his life, on September 1, 1947 in Weatherford, Texas. Truman served twenty years in the Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. Following his retirement with the U.S. Air Force, he worked at UNM and was instrumental in starting the EMT program throughout the state of New Mexico. He then went on to work at the VA Hospital and retired from the VA in 1994. He continued to volunteer two days a week at the VA Hospital up until the time of his death at age 80. Truman is survived by his wife of 62 years, Noma; and two daughters, Cheryl Vineyard and her husband Mike, and Jan Robbins and her husband David; nine grandchildren: Doug Vineyard and wife Lisa, Chris Martin, Jeff Martin, Steffanie Lafors and husband Peter, Jason Gilbert, Matt Robbins and wife Melanie, Nicholas Robbins, Amber Vineyard, and Elizabeth Robbins; six great-grandchildren: Alex, Zach, and Cody Vineyard, Logan and Sofie Lafors, and Christian Gilbert; He is also survived by his brother Larry Hopkins; and sister Beulah Roberts. Truman was preceded in death by his parents; brother Wallace Hopkins; sisters Bernice Adams and Virginia Bess; daughter Judy Lynne Gilbert; and granddaughter Denise Vineyard. Truman served as a deacon at Sandia Baptist Church for more than 25 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He will be greatly missed. A service celebrating his life will be on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Sandia Baptist Church, 9429 Constitution Ave NE 87112. Family welcomes friends to French Mortuary Friday, May 7, 2010 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be Mike Vineyard, David Robbins, Doug Vineyard, Chris Martin, Jeff Martin, and Matt Robbins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Sandia Baptist Church building fund. Private burial will take place at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.
