BAUGHER -- Phyllis Marie Baugher (nee Miller), 97, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister passed away on Friday, March 26, 2010, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born September 9, 1912, in Port Republic, Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley. Phyllis graduated from Madison College in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 1933, and taught for two years in one-room schools in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Growing up, Phyllis frequently visited relatives in Hershey, Pennsylvania,. In the summer of 1934, she met Earl Baugher at his cousin's party. They were married a year later, in 1935, and settled in Hershey to work and raise a family. Phyllis taught as a substitute teacher for ten years in the Hershey public schools. She then worked as a full-time elementary teacher at the Milton Hershey School, where her husband Earl also taught. She retired in 1975. She loved teaching, and many of her happiest memories were of her years in the classroom. In 1994 she moved to Sterling, Illinois, to live closer to daughter Elizabeth and her family. In 2001 the Sterling family all moved to Albuquerque where Phyllis' other daughter, Suzanne, lived. Phyllis was very unvolved in all the family activities, the visits from her grandchildren, making new friends and of course continuing her lifelong tradition of cooking wonderful meals for family and friends. The kitchen was the epicenter of her life, and her thoughts always revolved around planning menus for upcoming visits, special occasions, and family get-togethers. The family has many warm memories of enjoying her favorite meals. Phyllis was also a devoted reader, especially of the Bible, and an avid knitter. Family and friends cherish the wonderful afghans she gave as gifts through the years. Phyllis was a lifetime Christian and most recently a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Earl in 1974; as well as three brothers; two sisters; and a son-in-law. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Riley (Robert) and Suzanne Gaines. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Robert Riley (Annette) and Mary Elizabeth Riley-Gilbert (Ross); and sister, Polly Nichter, as well as other family and friends who loved her and will miss her. A memorial celebrating Phyllis' life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 18, 2010, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 10000 Candelaria Rd NE. Burial of her cremated remains will be in Pineville, Virginia at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Joy Junction, P.O.
